GMG QUESTIONNAIRE SERIES-Karen Hanson

How long have you lived in Gloucester?

5 years

What is your favorite season in Gloucester?

Summer, by a mile.

Do you have a secret outdoor spot in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?

I’m not sure it’s much of a secret, but it’s always quiet and beautiful on Coffins Beach.

Favorite pizza joint in Gloucester?

Bravo! Delicious. But if you haven’t had a pizzetta at Tonno (does that count?), you should.

Favorite sub shop in Gloucester?

I can’t believe it, but I can’t remember having a sub in Gloucester. Alicia’s wraps at Cove Cafe are a favorite.

Romantic dinner in Gloucester?

Tonno or Oak to Ember

Favorite bar in Gloucester?

Tonno! Paulo, Alex & Ryan are the best bartenders in town!

Favorite breakfast joint in Gloucester?

Sugar Mags. We go hapless at the shop when they take vacation.

Favorite local event in Gloucester?

Bluefin, of course!

In the summer, do you prefer the beach or to or to be on a boat?

Boat, but I’d have to try hard to have a bad day on the beach!

Who is your favorite local artist?

Way too many list – we are so lucky to have the dynamic art community we have now, and have had for over 100 years . But in anticipation of his installation this summer at the Cape Ann Museum, I’ll say one of my all time favorites, Edward Hopper.

Which is your favorite local beach?

Wingaersheek after 4pm. It’s like I raised my kids there. So many memories 🙂

Who has the best deck in Gloucester for dinner/drinks?

the Studio

Who has the best chowder in town?

Fish chowder at the Causeway is our go-to, but I just had a coconut curry fish chowder at  Oak to Ember that I’d eat every day for eternity.

What are some favorite local online websites/Instagram accounts?

GMG! And @cutbridgecrazziness

Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?

Love both.

Name an unsung hero.

The folks at Cape Ann Special Olympics do an extraordinary job. CASO has a Special Olympics Global Ambassador and at least one Massachusetts Hall of Famer! They are doing inspiring things every day with wonderful (and very competitive!) individuals.

What is your favorite local band?

I don’t get to see as many as I’d like, so I’m going to work on that 🙂

Kate’s Dad Buzza Foley Inducted Into The Beverly High Hall Of Fame

William J. Foley, Jr., Best known as a very successful BHS soccer coach, William J. Foley Ir., a graduate of the Beverly High School class of 1969, he was also a hockey and baseball player for three years. He quickly moved the BHS soccer program from club level to interscholastic league play and to North Shore prominence.

His father, William Foley, Sr, who was Superintendent of schools, helped to develop the BHS boys hockey program in its early years with no inside rink (practiced on Kelleher’s pond) and with no youth hockey teams. So both coaches started from ‘scratch’.

The challenge for the soccer coach was to motivate and recruit students who wanted to play football or cross country in the fall season. Coach Foley was able to assemble a full varsity and IV team from the very first season. His teams were famous for not backing down or backing up. Each year the team’s skill level and the record improved, reaching the State finals against Lexington in 1979.

Bill’s greatest talent as a coach was as a motivator. He did not want BHS teams to be out- worked, to be prepared to represent Beverly High School as a group of student athletes. BHS may not have had the most skilled players, but no team in the NEC played harder. A notable player was Mayor Cahill.

Statistically, Bill had a record of 114-34-26, first or second in NEC each year, in the State Tournament for eight straight years, and two-time Salem News ‘Coach of the Year’

Beyond statistics, the most important trait of Coach Bill Foley was that he was remembered as the supreme motivator of his teams, often times with less talented players.
