Many people view massage therapy as a method for relaxing and letting go of stress. These are two benefits, of course, but massage therapy is also an incredible tool for healing various issues.
How Does Massage Therapy Work?
Therapeutic massage is a method through which firm strokes or pressure are utilized in a target area. This technique helps break up nervous tissues to relieve pain and address motion restrictions. These benefits are commonly known, but this approach does much more than that.
As treated, an area pulls blood and other healing nutrients to kickstart the body’s natural healing processes. As a result, damaged tissue can regenerate and heal, relieving pain and reducing inflammation.
Massage therapy is also beneficial, as it promotes the release of endorphins in the body. This method provides a feeling of relaxation and reduces or eliminates your pain.

WINES
Noelia Ricci Bro’ Trebbiano,
Varietal: Trebbiano, Alc. 13%
Noelia Ricci is a project started in 2010 within Pandolfa, an estate rich in history and stretching over an area of 140 hectares at the foot of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The estate was acquired by Giuseppe Ricci in 1941, but he did not turn the land to agriculture and vineyards until the 1950s, when he planted Sangiovese, Trebbiano, and Albana grapes. Ricci’s daughter took over upon her father’s death in 1980 and started planting new vineyards and building a winery. In 2010, Marco Cirese, one of Noelia’s great-grandchildren, began the Noelia Ricci project, a tribute to the classic winemaking style, with a contemporary approach.By avoiding over-extraction, excessive alcohol content and highly concentrated colors, he strives to make wines having a fine structure, strong personality and complexity, while maintaining an inviting approach and pursuing drinkability. The Bro’ Trebbiano is straw yellow with golden reflections. Delicate fruit scents, lemon zest, florals, and citrus aromas lead to a palate that is fresh and has flavor consistent with the bouquet. It is round and balanced, with a citrus and mineral backbone, and notes of bitter fruit on the finish. Pairs well with risottos, white meats. $19.99
Illahe Viognier, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Varietal: Viognier, Alc.12%
Illahe, pronounced Ill-Uh-Hee, is a local Chinook word meaning “earth” or “place” or “soil.”At Illahe, owners Lowell and Pauline Ford strive to make wine as naturally as possible from soil to bottle. They work by hand on small lots with age-old techniques and materials. The focus is to grow and make quality Pinot Noir and white wines that express the vintage and their varietal characteristics without enzymes or additives. Some of the wines are made entirely by hand, with no electricity or modern mechanization; they use a gentle wooden basket press. They are committed to dry agriculture and responsible water practices and do not irrigate mature plants. As one of Oregon’s few horse-powered vineyards, they use a team of Percheron draft horses to mow and deliver grapes to the winery at harvest. The Illahe Viognier has aromas of white peach, nectarine, dragon fruit, pineapple, jasmine, and sweet pea. The palate is clean with vibrant acidity, and it has a refreshing finish. Pairs well with salmon, roast chicken, spicy food. $ 27.99
Ameztoi is a renowned producer in Getariako Txakolina, respected for producing both traditional wines in large barrels and as an innovator for their rosé txakolina and method traditionnelle sparkling wines. Ameztoi owns twenty hectares of estate vineyards facing the Bay of Biscay, high on the slopes rising above Getaria, an ancient Basque fishing village on Spain’s rugged northern coast. Ignacio Ameztoi is the fifth generation of his family to carry on the tradition of making txakolina in the province of Getaria and has played a key role in the advancement of the region. Ameztoi Rubentis rosé is a field blend of the local, indigenous hondarrabizuri and hondarrabibeltza varieties, grown on traditional trellises. In the 2000s, when almost all of the other local wineries gave up on the indigenous red hondarrabibeltza vines, the Ameztoi family retained their old vines. Rubentis, the region’s first pink wine, was inspired by the historic claret style wines which were once produced in the area. The backbone of the blend comes from an old hondarrabibeltza vineyard planted in 1840, preserved by the Ameztoi family for generations. The Ameztoi Rubentis pours pale pink with fine, elegant bubbles, the result of natural fermentation. Aromas of citrus and menthol are followed on the palate by notes of strawberry and caramel. Pairs well with oysters, sushi, seafood tempura.$24.99
Domaine Arnoux Savigny-Les-Beaune, Burgundy, France
Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc.14.5%
For many generations, Domaine Arnoux Père &Fils has thrived in the village of Chorey-lès-Beaune, where they perpetuate the Burgundy wine tradition. Created by René, his children Michel and Rémi began to expand the Domaine and develop the bottling. In 1990, Pascal joined his uncles and produced his first vintage in 2007. As the head of the winery, Pascal, supported by wife Caroline, combines savoir-faire and new technologies to protect the vineyard and offer wines of great quality.Today, the Domaine covers more than 20 hectares, divided between the villages of Chorey-lès-Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton, Beaune and Pernand Vergelesses. The Savigny-Les-Beaune pours a deep red color.Aromas of Morello cherry, blackcurrant, and raspberry mix with spicy notes and lead to a refined and supple palate. It is a delicate and elegant wine. Pairs well with roast pork, grilled chicken, risotto. $42.99
Illahe Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc. 14%
Home of some of the most elegant and expressive Pinot Noir in the world, the Willamette Valley is a mixed landscape of green, rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. At Illahe, in addition to using using draft horses to plow and to transport the grapes, they use solar power and the winery buildings are gravity-flow, featuring three levels, and using the natural slope of the site, starting from the crush pad to the fermenters and the press below. A further drop-off from the fermentation room to the press level means the press baskets can be loaded by hand. The care that is taken with the land and the grapes shows in the wine. The Pinot Noir has aromas of ripe plum, nutmeg, cigar box, and vanilla bean. The fruit on the palate — cherry torte, tamarind paste, strawberry jam, anise – along with nutmeg and cinnamon spice, help develop a balanced and weighted mouth feel with good acidity and smooth, lingering tannins. Pairs well with grilled salmon, coq au vin, mushroom pasta. $31.99

A group of the 80 attendees at the Sawyer Library Foundation Women’s Luncheon to benefit the Sawyer Free 2025 capital campaign gathers for a photo. Leading into the holiday weekend, a sellout gathering of 80 attended a Sawyer Library Foundation Women’s Luncheon at Oak to Ember restaurant to benefit the Sawyer Free 2025 capital campaign to renovate and expand Cape Ann’s oldest public library. The fully philanthropic sawyerfree2025.org campaign further elevated the daytime fundraiser’s profile by formally announcing the latest gifted naming opportunities available for the new library building, which will celebrate its groundbreaking this fall.
“We’re almost 400 days into the public phase of this campaign and the overwhelming response to this event on the eve of the holiday weekend was humbling and offers a great deal of hope,” said Sarah Oaks, the Foundation’s campaign manager. “We’ve got more work to do and more ground to cover in order for this project to become a reality, but it’s becoming clear how passionately people believe that Cape Ann deserves this library.”
Community philanthropist Kate Stavis was part of the luncheon’s five-member host committee, which billed this past week’s event as an unofficial kickoff to the Cape Ann summer season. Liza Featherstone, a Manhattan-based columnist for the Jacobin and The New Republic, delivered the keynote address. She discussed the ideal of an inclusive library in a democratic society, reflecting on the novelist Virginia Woolf’s account of her humiliating experience of being excluded from Oxford University’s library, and learning that women could only enter with permission from a man.
Featherstone, who has close family ties to Cape Ann and has been a lifelong visitor to Sawyer Free Library, recalled that her own mother had a similar experience at Gloucester’s Sawyer Free Library as recently as the early 1970s—when a librarian there told her she needed her husband’s permission to apply for a library card. There was an audible gasp from the luncheon’s audience.
Featherstone, whose mother, Helen, was a writer prior to her death in 2021 while living on Eastern Point, noted that while today’s libraries are open to all, their inclusiveness “has made them a target (of book-bannings and other restrictions).” Today’s ‘gatekeepers,’ she said, know they can’t go back to the days when women weren’t allowed to use the library, so instead “they seek to abolish the library itself … But we won’t let them win.”
During the course of the event, many of those gathered exchanged stories about the role public libraries played in their personal and professional growth, and the crucial contributions of modern public libraries in support of women and girls. Gloucester attorney Meredith Fine addressed the assembly and described the life-altering role her local library played as a new home away from home after her family relocated during her middle school years. She characterized the Sawyer Free 2025 capital campaign as “the most important” fundraising effort currently underway on Cape Ann.
A LASTING LEGACY
In conjunction with the fundraising luncheon, the release of the Sawyer Free 2025 campaign’s new list of naming opportunities confirmed that nearly half of currently available donor-recognition opportunities have been reserved. That leaves 13 which remain available, including the Main Floor Reading Room, the Main Floor Atrium, the Teen Room, the Dale Avenue portico and the Fountain Plaza, among others.
Prior major gifts by donors have secured naming rights for the Children’s Room (the Institution for Savings), the Children’s Program Room (Bank Gloucester), the Teen Creation Space (Sudbay Automotive Group), the Digital Makerspace (Cape Ann Savings Bank) and the Library History Center (Gorton’s), along with several others still to be announced.
The Women’s Luncheon host committee’s members featured Stavis, Frederica Doeringer, the Vice Chair of the Sawyer Free 2025 campaign, Stephanie Cuff, Sally Bradley-Golding and Oaks. Five silent auction items were snapped up, including combinations of restaurant gift certificates, a gift certificate for Beth Williams jewelry items, Gloucester Stage Company tickets, lunch at a private club, and car service to dinner driven by mystery chauffeur in an elegant, luxury vehicle.
The event raised about $10,000 toward the construction of the new library. For more information about the new library or to get involved, visit sawyerfree2025.org.
