G400+ Track&Field event this Sunday June 18

When: Father’s Day, June 18

Where: Newell Stadium, Gloucester High School, 32 Leslie O. Johnson Road, Gloucester

Time: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Registration open at 9:00 am

Cost: Free

To reserve a spot: Pre-register or register on the morning of the event at www.gloucesterma400.org/event/track-field-day/

This is a free event for kids, organized by the Gloucester 400+ Athletic Committee, and sponsored by Gloucester 400+. It is designed for children who are in Kindergarten through 8th grade.  Bring the whole family to this special event to celebrate the 400+. 

The meet begins at 10am Sunday.  And for those families that didn’t register their children ahead of time, there will be time to register on the day of, starting at 9am. There will be water available for participants and a free t shirt for those that register up to 300. 

The track and field meet has four events: the 100m and 200m, Softball Throw, the (soft) Javelin, and Long Jump. Each child will receive a free t-shirt at registration.

Background: The Gloucester 400+ is led by Tri-Chairs Bob Gillis, Ruth Pino and Bruce Tobey, and Executive Director Elsje Zwart, with more than 100 City and community leaders organized on committees as well as many organizational partners and volunteers. The vision of the Gloucester 400+ is to inspire future generations to honor the past and work collectively to frame the future. The mission is to commemorate, celebrate, and promote knowledge of Gloucester’s 400+ years of cultural, social, ethnic, and economic diversity. Leading up to and throughout 2023, significant programs and events will highlight Gloucester’s rich history and heritage that encompass its extraordinary ethnic diversities, art and culture, remarkable industrial achievements and stellar natural resources.

Gloucester Education Foundation recaps a great year of programs for Gloucester students

With the 2022-23 school year wrapping up tomorrow, the Gloucester Education Foundation (GEF) has released their FY23 Impact Report. Built around the theme of “Discover, Connect, Belong”, this year’s report is full of images, stats, and stories from current GPS students and alumni; teachers and administrators; GEF supporters and champions. This was a big year for GEF, with the return of The Power of Play and Gloucester Student Arts Festival, continued growth in arts, STEM and vocational investments, and the integration of their new Student Advisory Committee. See below for lots of images from this school year and the incredible array of learning opportunities supported by GEF.

East Elementary School Fourth Grade “Battle of the Books”

Sawyer Free Library was honored to participate in this fun event, promoting literacy and education within the community.

Fun was had by all fourth graders last week at East Gloucester Elementary School first ever “Battle of the Books,” a challenge where students read books and then came together to test their book knowledge in a game show-style competition. This fun literary competition was between three teams of East Elementary School fourth graders. 

With the students’ parents and families cheering them on, the fourth graders competed by answering questions about books on the “Battle of the Books” list. It was a competitive until the end, with the final score being: Team 1: 27 points, Team 2: 29 points and Team 3: 27 points.

Over the past four months, from April 3 through June 7, East Gloucester Elementary School fourth graders have been reading an assortment of children’s book titles…
