COMPLIMENTARY
FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH MATT BROOKS OF CYNTHIA HURLEY WINES
Cynthia Hurley French Wines began in 1984 when Cynthia and Robert Hurley started importing French Bordeaux into New York and New Jersey. Cynthia and Robert had been living and working in Paris and became enamored with French wine. Many of their weekends were spent driving to the different wine regions of France to find those undiscovered bottles of great wine from small family producers.
When the Hurleys returned stateside, they began to import the wines they loved, but couldnโt find in the U.S. The business expanded to include top producers and everyday drinking wines from Burgundy, Loire, and Rhone.
Cynthia relocated the business to Newton, Massachusetts, when they moved from New York City. They found distribution and began to sell their wines in restaurants and wine shops. Robert Hurley has continued to run the business since Cynthiaโs death in 2011. He remains committed to the companyโs founding principle of, โdeveloping a portfolio of domains all family-run no negociants, no cooperatives, just dedicated winemakers.โ
WINES
Domaine J. Laurens, Crรฉmant de Limoux, La Rose No.7, Sparkling Rosรฉ NV, Limoux, France
Varietals: 60% Chardonnay, 25% Chenin Blanc, 15% Pinot Noir, Alc.12%
Domaine J. Laurens is located near the city of Carcassonne in France’s wine region of Limoux. Since the Domaine’s beginning in the 1980s, they have been recognized for the high quality of their sparkling wines. In 2021 the Domaine received an HVC3 (โHigh Environmental Valueโ Certification) the highest level, indicating farming practices are conducted sustainably. This area is where Blanquette de Limoux, considered to be the first sparkling white wine in France, was produce in 1531. The Limoux zone of production was the first to create a DOC in the Languedoc with Blanquette and Blanquette Mรฉthode Ancestrale in 1938, both of them made with the traditional white grape variety of Limoux: Mauzac. A decree published in 1990 added a new appellation, Crรฉmant de Limoux, and following a recent change to the decree, Cremant de Limoux is now produced with Chardonnay and Chenin. Mauzac and/or Pinot Noir can also be added. La Rosรฉ No. 7 is fresh and dry with delicate bubbles. The light cherry-pink color and ripe aromas give way to a palate that boasts red fruits and vigorous fullness of flavor. Serve as an aperitif. Pairs well with brie and bread, grilled oysters, green salad with fruit vinaigrette. $24.99
Bodega Nivarius White Rioja, Rioja, Spain
Varietals: 95% White Tempranillo, 5% Malvasรญa Riojana, Alc. 13.5%
Bodega Nivarius is a unique winery in Rioja because it exclusively produces white wines from native varieties such as White Maturana, Viura, and Garnacha Blanca. The white Maturana, a variety that was practically extinct in the territory, is one of the bodegaโs mainstays, along with the old vines of Viura and Garnacha blanca that are scattered throughout the headlands of red vineyards. They also work with white Tempranillo. The winery and vineyards are at elevations of 800 meters, with north-facing vineyards influenced by an Atlantic climate. These conditions create impeccable white wines that express the character and genuine personality of the regionโs local white varieties. The estate practices farming with little intervention to respect the biodiversity of the environment, resulting in a genuine expression of the land and the wines. Nivarius is a Latin term for a natural well where the snow was stored all year round. The white Rioja pours a straw-yellow color, with greenish rim. On the nose, hints of apple, pears, and stone fruits are accompanied by a slight aroma of white flowers and a subtle mineral hint. Fresh and balanced on the palate, it has ample texture and a long finish with dried fruit hints. Pairs well with shellfish, grilled fish, and gazpacho. $17.99
Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau, Vouvray,Loire, France
Varietal: Chenin Blanc, Alc. 12.5%
Since 1875, the Vigneau-Chevreau family has farmed the chalky soils of this 69-acre Vouvray domaine, planted entirely to Chenin Blanc. The late Jean-Michel Vigneau began steering the family domaine in an organic direction in the early โ90s, and by 1999 Vigneau-Chevreau received certification from Ecocert. Shortly thereafter, the new generation of Vigneaus took the next step by adopting a biodynamic vineyard regimen. Today the winery is run by Jean-Michelโs two sons, Christophe and Stephane. โVigneau Selectionโ is a new designation, indicating that the wine was not made from estate-grown grapes but rather from fruit brought in from sustainably farmed sources. Like all of their wines, this is a fresh and flavorful version of Chenin Blanc, with a wonderful stony minerality and bright acidity. The Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau Vouvray Selection is a Sec (Dry) wine characterized by a slight residual sugar and pleasant acidity. Notes of flint with apple, quince and citrus. Serve as an aperitif. Pairs well with sushi, salmon, and lobster. $22.99
Domaine Lagneau, Beaujolais Cru Cรดte de Brouilly, Burgundy, France
Varietals: Gamay%, Alc.15%
Domaine Lagneau is owned by the Lagneau family, Gerard, Jeannine, and their son Didier. They purchased the property in 1978 in the village of Quincie-en-Beaujolais, located on the slopes of Mt. Brouilly. It has its own cellar that dates to the 12th century. Currently, Didier is the winemaker, having taken over the reins from his father. This wine is a Vieilles Vignes, meaning the fruit comes from 75-year-old vines. The Lagneaus make the wine in the traditional Beaujolais method. Didier lets the Gamay grapes undergo semi-carbonic maceration (the grapes ferment in their own skins) and then the wine is aged in neutral concrete tanks. This technique gives the Cรดte de Brouilly its endearing fruity, freshness. Domaine Lagneau Cรดte de Brouilly is juicy, fruity, and fresh, with aromas of red fruit and plums, combined with floral, peppery and mineral notes. Cru Beaujolais at its finest. Can be served slightly chilled. Pairs well with charcuterie, ham, Andouille sausage. $23.99
Domaine La Font de Notre Dame Rasteau,Rhone, France
Varietal: 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 5% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, Alc.15%
Domaine La Font de Notre Dame, situated in the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail, is a family estate managed by the Roux family. In 2016 Jean-Pierre Roux handed the reins over to his sons, Frรฉdรฉric and Boris, who continue to impress with their commitment to showcase the beauty of their terroirs in a bottle. While the Domaine is based in Gigondas, they also have holdings in Lirac and Rasteau. The Domaine has 13 hectares of 80-year-old vines in Rasteau. The sun-soaked plots are planted in clay soils with an abundance of heat-retaining pebbles. This Rasteau has a deep purple color. Concentrated aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, licorice, spices, and a hint of chocolate appear on the nose. An explosive palate offers ripe fruit and spicy, enduring tannins. Pairs well with cured meats, grilled eggplant and mushrooms, leg of lamb. $23.99
