The GFAA would like to announce to the community that we have allocated funds to start a scholarship in memory of our founder and friend, Dick Wilson.
Dick passed away in July 2023. He was a believer in doing what he called “good-ness” and made a difference with his philanthropy and volunteerism in countless ways in the community. The hallmark of Dick’s life was doing good deeds, big and small, and he made Gloucester better along the way. He had a knack for seeing a problem, coming up with an idea on how to fix it, and getting people to help him make it happen. He was an inspiration to many and had a profound impact on Gloucester and the people that call Gloucester home.
We would like to offer a scholarship to a graduating high school senior. The amount will be determined annually. Half of the scholarship will be for the recipient to get started in their next chapter and half of the scholarship will be for the recipient to use to do “good-ness” in Gloucester.
Dick wasn’t a big fan of a lot of paperwork or a lot of rules, so we are going to honor that with this scholarship. More details will be shared during the upcoming school year.
If you would like to make a contribution to the scholarship, checks can be mailed to

Art tour coincides with Mass Tax Free Weekend

The Cape Ann Artisans invite the public to visit select studios on Saturday, August 12th for a one-day event. The timing coincides with Mass Tax Free weekend as well as the height of Gloucester and Rockport’s summer activities along the waterfront. The summer Mini-Tour is an off-shoot of the larger tour that takes place in the Spring and Fall.
This year’s Mini-Tour includes these artists and the numbers coincide with their place on the full Spring and Fall tours – the map can be downloaded here: Brochure & Map:
3) Beth Williams – Handmade Art-Glass Beads & Jewelry
10) Pam Stratton – Mosaics, Mixed Media & Jewelry
11) Cynthia Curtis – Ceramic Arts, Stoneware
13) David Archibald – Ceramic Arts, Porcelain & Stoneware
15) Danette English – Ceramic Arts
16) John Abisamra – Landscape Photography
17) Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco – Sea Glass Wearable Art; Hair Accessories & Jewelry
The Mini-Tour is a great chance to give out of town visitors a glimpse of the tour which has always occurred on the fringe of summer. The Artisans have enjoyed meeting an entirely new set of summer Cape Ann residents. With some advance planning it’s easy to see all seven studios. The Cape Ann Artisans “From the Studio” blog on their website is a great way to find out more about each artist and prepare for your visit. The Mass Sales Tax Holiday will take place August 12 and 13th. Retail items of up to $2500, purchased in Massachusetts for personal use on these two days will be exempt for sales tax.

| We are so excited to share this incredible and exciting news! We have been given an amazingly generous opportunity to improve and expand our life saving services. Ms. Yvonne Wood, a longtime Rockport resident, artist and supporter of local charities, wanted to see CAAA expand our mission and make our dreams of increasing our isolation and improving our shelter a reality. She has donated $1,000,000 toward creating a new “Wing of Hope” in honor of her late husband Walter. In addition, Ms. Wood is now inviting CAAA friends and supporters to assist our effort by giving an additional $250,000 matching grant. As you may know, over the past few years CAAA has expanded its Shelter Medicine program and now has a procedure room, a full-time veterinarian, and veterinary technicians. CAAA provides in-house care for our shelter cats and dogs, and additional services to pets in our community through programs to provide free spay and neuter for low-income pet owners and hosting low-cost vaccine and microchipping clinics. CAAA’s volunteer and community programs incorporate education in animal training and behavior and veterinary medicine. Thanks to your generous support, CAAA has the commitment and the heart for this important life-saving work but needs more physical space. After working with architects and building advisors to create a building plan, CAAA is ready to move forward and is asking our supporters for help. We estimate that the cost to complete needed upgrades for the current building, animal housing units and the “Wing of Hope” will be approximately $1.7 million dollars. Buoyed by the generosity of Ms. Yvonne Wood, CAAA is launching a capital campaign for upgrades and construction and needs your help. This is a great and exciting opportunity to double the impact of your donation. All donations up to $250,000 will be matched! |
