FINE WINE TASTING with Augusto Gabriel, ambassador of Portuguese Wine

Join us Saturday as Augusto Gabriel will offer detailed information about the Portuguese wine region: the history as well as the indigenous grape varieties and the rules and laws of Portuguese wine.

Augusto was born in Portugal and has resided in the United States for over 30 years. For 20 years he has traveled throughout all the Portuguese wine regions. He has met, discussed, and studied this wine sector in detail with leading wine personalities across the country. He is recognized in the wine industry circles as one of the leading Portuguese wine experts. We always enjoy a visit from Augusto. We first met at an extraordinary wine dinner hosted by Chef Patrick Shea at C.K. Pearl. I found him so very informative and engaging, we invited him here. These wines represent several different regions in Portugal and no one knows them better than Augusto. Don’t miss a chance to learn a bit from him and enjoy the wonderful bounty of Portuguese wine country.

WINES

Quinta do Regueiro Foral Alvarinho, Melgaco, Portugal

Varietal: Alvarinho,Alc.12.5%

Melgaco is the original home of the Alvarinho grape. It is the most northern region of Portugal, protected by the surrounding mountains that allow a perfect marriage between rainfall, temperature, and the number of hours of sunshine needed for the maturation of the Alvarinho grape. In 1988, Paulo Rodrigu planted his first vineyards here. Over the following 10 years, he  continued to plant, increasing his production area to 15 hectares. His “Foral” is a very complex wine with great balance and style, packed with intense aromas of citrus, apple, pear and floral scents with a tropical background. The palate is full-bodied and voluminous, with a fresh and vibrant acidity and great minerality. Pairs well with ceviche, seafood risotto, grilled fish. $18.99

BeyraReserva White, Beira, Portugal

Varietals: 50% Fonte Cal, 30% Siria, 10% Verdelho, 10% Godelho, Alc. 13%

In 2011 winemaker Rui Roboredo Madeira returned to the same winery where he worked his first harvest in 1987, a small winery located in the village of Vermiosa, in the highest vineyards in Portugal. He rehabilitated the property because he believes that this region’s winemaking heritage is one of the most hidden treasures of Portuguese wines: old vines of native grape varieties perfectly adapted to the rugged climate caused by the high altitude, along with the soil, where many veins of quartz run through the schist and granite. The soul of this wine lies in the unique combination of the Síria and Fonte Cal native grape varieties, from vines planted in purely granite soils with quartz veins, in the Douro River’s hydrographical basin, at an average altitude of 725 meters above sea level. The wine has high minerality, notes of citrus, grapefruit, and vibrant acidity with a structure that promises good aging in the bottle. Pairs well with  shellfish, fatty fish, and cured goat cheeses. $18.99

Castello D’Alba White, Douro Valley, Portugal

Varietal: 60% Rabigato, 40% Viosinho, Alc.

Clean, fresh, and aromatic, this wine is aged for 4 months in stainless steel vats before bottling. Minerality with citrus and floral notes dominate, as is typical of wines from the high-altitude vineyards of the Douro. Complex aromas with a mineral character balanced with tropical and citrus fruits, white wildflowers, as well as discreet and evocative toasty hints of oak. Full and creamy on the palate, with nice body, freshness and a very long finish. This remarkable value earned a 90 point rating from Decanter and a Best Buy from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Great with shellfish, seafood pastas, soft cheeses and spicy aromatic dishes. $14.99

The Douro valley offers extraordinarily good conditions for wine grapes on the steeply shelved slopes of the River Douro, hill after hill stretching off to the horizon with narrow roads winding around their contours. Here, the vine terraces bask in the sun that provides ideal climatic conditions, heating the pure schist and granite soil that is typical within this region. For centuries, Douro growers have been supplying the world with Port. Now wine experts the world over recognize that the Douro region also offers ideal conditions for making unfortified wines of the highest quality, both red and white. Rui Roboredo Madeira produced his first wine here in 2000. Today, Castello D’Alba is one of the Douro’s leading brands.

Castello D’Alba Red, Douro Valley, Portugal

Varietal: 40% TintaRoriz, 30% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, Alc.13.5%

Castello D’Alba Red is a blend of three Douro varietals. It has aromas of red berries and spices with hints of rock rose, flowers, and blackberries. It is very smooth on the palate with balanced acidity and fine tannins. Pairs well with roasted chicken, grilled pork, hamburgers. $14.99

Van Zellers Douro Red, Douro Valley, Portugal

Varietals: Field Blend of 30+ varieties, Alc.15 %

Founded as a port wine company in the early 17th century, Van Zellers has 15 generations of experience in crafting the world’s most exceptional ports. Now Van Zellers, like other producers in the Douro, has turned to making unfortified wines. All our grapes were foot trodden in open air tanks for 1 to 3 days before fermentation and then fermented in stainless steel vats for 7 to 10 days. The Douro Red is complex and structured. It has aromas of dark fruits and wild berries. On the palate, it is fruity, spicy, and full. Pairs well with game, veal, mushroom dishes. $29.99
