Happy Birthday George

Good morning Joey,

Can you please wish my son George a happy first birthday on air or in print – he will be one year old today. I am his mom and I love him very much! It would mean a lot to me, because he is a special little person entering into a great big world. He has been visiting with family in the North Shore area and since I cannot be there today myself I would love for a birthday message to be shared with the citizens of Gloucester (the city is 400 and George is just one, so I understand if this request isn’t heard until a later date)

George is a strong and adventurous child with a happy smile and a joyful personality. He loves blueberries and morning walks with his brother and dad. Happy first birthday George Robert!

If you can share this message please let me know where it will be written or when it may be announced. I support local news and follow up on local events, particularly stories related to nature and local history.  I’d like to stay in touch and I appreciate your time.

Thank you,

Olivia Wrobel

Dogtown Common Theatre Production: Friday, September 22 and Saturday, September 23rd at 7:30pm

30pm

Takes place indoors in the back dance studio.

Dogtown Common by Percy MacKaye, adapted and directed by Peter Littlefield at the Windhover Center for the Performing Arts, Rockport, MaPercy MacKaye’s 1922 poem, Dogtown Common, is a beloved document of Gloucester lore. It tells the story of two legendary figures, Tammy Younger and her niece Judy Rhines, shunned for practicing witchcraft. It was inspired by Charles Mann’s 1906, The Story of Dogtown or In the Heart of Cape Ann, that compiles recollections about the outsiders, berry-pickers, subsistence farms and self-proclaimed witches that inhabited Dogtown after it was abandoned in the early 1800’s.The poem has a history with The Windhover Center for the Performing Arts, where Ina Hahn performed it more than once. Lisa Hahn, the current Executive Director, asked Annisquam resident and Director Peter Littlefield to do a new production. Windhover had been a dairy farm. It seemed the perfect place to stage the poem because it looks the way Dogtown must have looked before it was abandoned after the Revolution. Windhover’s production combines the idea of an installation with a staged reading like a ghost story. The performers sit around a table and build an image of Dogtown as they enact the poem. The performance is as fully staged as a conventional play, but we put the emphasis on the imaginative act of engaging a poetic text.Cast: Peter Berkrot, Judy Brain, Duncan Hollomon, Cass Tunick, Brain Weed and Deirdre Weed Music arranged and performed by Kathleen Adams

Complimentary Fine Wine Tasting at Savour, Saturday, Sept. 9, 2 – 4 pm

THIS SATURDAY, Saturday, Sept. 9, 2 – 4 PM, COMPLIMENTARY

FINE WINE TASTING with Paige Farrell of Hogshead Wines

A hogshead is a large cask of wine. References to “hogsheads” were commonly found in colonial America as a standard measure of taxation for wine and other beverages. It now refers to a specified volume equaling 63 U.S. gallons. Hogshead Wine Company is a well-connected, fresh distributor composed of industry veterans which serves the best restaurants and the finest wine shops throughout Massachusetts. They appreciate tradition in the vineyard and seek to represent growers and importers who embrace this same philosophy – the encouragement of time-honored techniques and minimal intervention.

WINES

Maysara NV Sparkling Pinot Noir Rosé, McMinnville, Oregon

Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc.12.5%

The owners of the Montazi vineyard and Maysara Winery are committed to capturing the true expression of the land and conveying it through their wine. They practice low-impact, holistic farming methods in their certified biodynamic vineyard and carry this philosophy into the cellar, where their biodynamic winemaking practices produce elegant wines that maintain the harmony between fruit and earth. Their sparkling rose made with 100% Pinot Noir grapes is balanced, with high tension acidity and minerality. The fine bubbles keep the aromatics tight with a clean finish of dried cranberries, pomegranate and wild strawberries.Serve as an aperitif. Pairs well with lobster, schnitzel, chocolate. $37.99

Trizanne Signature Wines Sauvignon Blanc, Cape South Coast, South Africa

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc, Alc. 13%

It may be working harvests in Alsace, Bordeaux, the Rhône, and the Douro that caused Trizanne Barnard to choose specific sites based on which grapes would be most suitable for the soil and climate. She is always looking for freshness, uniqueness and contrast, which she has found for Sauvignon Blanc in the cooler temperature vineyards of Elim, at the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. Trizanne has made this wine since 2013, showcasing a fresh, tank fermented style. This Sauvignon Blanc has vibrant notes of passion fruit, pear, sweet melon and citrus. There is a distinct mineral presence from this cooler climate. A beautiful salinity runs through the wine. Pairs well with oysters, fresh crab, simply grilled fish. $19.99

Storm Point Chenin Blanc, Swartland, South Africa

Varietals:Chenin Blanc, Alc.12.5%

Winemaker Mick Craven explored vineyards of the Western Cape of South Africa searching for sites speaking to the soul of this incredible place. Made from grapes from multiple vineyards in Swartland, a weathered landscape known as the Cape of Storms. This project was started as a collaboration focused on giving consumers a great insight into what the Swartland can do with varieties that work so well in the climate and soils. This Chenin Blanc has stone fruit and citrus notes, with a splash of salinity. The palate is bright, with herbal undertones, and typifies the region and grape. Its finish is mineral driven. Pairs well with grilled shrimp, pork chops, turkey.$19.99

Maysara Jamsheed Pinot Noir 2014, McMinnville, Oregon

Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc.13.5%

The owners of the Montazi vineyard and Maysara wines believe in holding vintages until the wine is fully evolved, rather than releasing chronologically. They believe each vintage is unique and should mature on its own timeline. The 2015 Pinot Noir was fermented with 100 percent native yeast and underwent malolactic fermentation. It was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (10% new, 90% neutral). Violet and cherry aromas on the nose lead to raspberry, blackberry, black tea, and fresh cracked pepper on the palate and lengthy tannins on the finish. Pairs well with dark fowl, grilled meats or salmon, and caramelized vegetables. $39.99

Storm Point Red Blend, Swartland, South Africa

Varietals: 50% Syrah, 40% Cinsaut, 10% Carignan, Alc. 13.5 %

The unruly landscape and intense growing season of the Swartland is the bedrock for this wine. The grapes for the wine come from three vineyards in the area: Paardeberg (Cinsault 50%, and Syrah), Malmesbury (Cinsault 50%), and Riebeek Valley (Carignan). The wine was fermented in stainless steel and aged for 9 months in neutral barriques (60%) and stainless steel (40%). Raspberry, black cherry, and crushed Herbes de Provence make up the bouquet on this wine. The palate is vibrant, with fresh, flavors of plum and orange zest. Smooth tannins lead to a refined finish. Pairs well with gilled mushrooms, charcuterie, grilled meat. $19.99

Backyard Growers and City of Gloucester to Launch Farmer’s Market in 2024

Partnership will bring new market to Burnham’s Field in downtown Gloucester.

Backyard Growers, a food equity nonprofit organization, and the City of Gloucester today announced that they are partnering in a mayoral initiative to launch a new farmer’s market in spring 2024. In partnership with the City, the market will be managed and operated by Backyard Growers at Burnham’s Field, a centrally-located public park in downtown Gloucester.

Over the past decade, Burnham’s Field has seen significant revitalization, and is now a locus of community activity, including a playground, walking paths, and athletic fields. The Field is also the site of the Backyard Growers-managed Burnham’s Field Community Garden, where over fifty local households grow their own food in two areas of raised garden beds.

“We are thrilled that the Verga administration approached Backyard Growers to lead the new farmer’s market,” said Alison DiFiore, Backyard Growers Executive Director. “The team who built the original Cape Ann Farmers Market created an amazing community resource and we’re honored to carry on the tradition of connecting Cape Ann through food. Backyard Growers is committed to cultivating healthy, connected, resilient communities, and a strong local food system is critical to achieving that mission. A farmer’s market that prioritizes public access, community development, and economic opportunity for small-scale farmers and business owners is an integral component of a resilient local food economy.”

The food produced in and around Gloucester is unique in its ties to the City’s fishing heritage as well as the contributions of the culturally diverse people who have called Gloucester home over the centuries. The new market will increase access to local food for everyone who lives in Gloucester and add a bustling weekly market to a thriving public park.

North Shore- and Cape Ann-based market vendors will provide food and produce including fruit, vegetables, eggs, fish, baked goods, fresh cut flowers, and more. The market will focus on increasing access to fresh food in a downtown Gloucester food desert.

“We are excited to join forces with Backyard Growers to meet a need in our community and create a new tradition in Gloucester,” said Mayor Greg Verga. “We are grateful for the opportunity to work hand in hand with a well-established organization that knows the significance of nurturing not only our green spaces but also the health and well-being of our residents.  This program represents a step forward in creating more access to local, fresh, and nutritious food.  We are thrilled to see Burnham’s Field come alive each week with the flavors of our region.”

Could Chiropractic Care Help Your Tendinitis Symptoms?

BY RUSSELLSHERI

Pain becomes a constant part of your life when you’re suffering from tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis, swimmer’s shoulder, or any other form of tendinitis. Chiropractic care offers an effective way to ease pain, tenderness, and swelling during your recovery.

What Is Tendinitis?

Tendons are strong cords of tissue that connect muscles to bones. Your tendons help your muscles move your bones and absorb shock when you move. Tendinitis occurs when the tendons become inflamed. Although tendons are flexible when you’re young, they stiffen and weaken as you grow older. Unfortunately, this may mean they become inflamed more easily.

Tendinitis can affect tendons anywhere in your body, causing pain that may last several weeks. Although the injury often affects athletes, anyone can develop tendinitis. Participating in activities that involve repetitive motions, like hitting a ball or running, raises your risk for tendinitis. Other risk factors include poor posture, jobs or sports that require overhead movements, or working with vibrating tools. You might also develop the condition after spending the weekend weeding your overgrown flower beds or swiping your finger across your smartphone.

Tendinitis can also be caused by overuse, which could occur if you exercise too long or too intensely. According to an article in American Family Physician, overuse injuries most often affect the:

  • Rotator Cuff in the Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Patellar Tendon in the Knee
  • Achilles at the Back of the Heel

Symptoms of tendinitis include:

  • Pain, Which May Worsen at Night or When You Move the Muscle or Joint
  • Warmth, Swelling, and Stiffness
  • Crackling Sound When Moving the Affected Part of Your Body

How Chiropractic Care Eases Tendinitis Symptoms

Your visit to the chiropractor starts with a thorough examination to determine why you have tendinitis. Although you may know that playing golf is the reason your elbow hurts, your chiropractor can determine if a muscle imbalance or other underlying issue is a contributing factor.

Visiting your chiropractor could help you:

  • Relieve Pain. Your chiropractor offers a variety of treatments aimed at easing your pain, including hot and cold therapies, massage, soft tissue mobilization, ultrasound therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy. Chiropractic treatment prompts your body to release natural painkillers and promotes healing by increasing blood flow.
  • Improve Flexibility. Swelling and inflammation causes stiffness, reducing your range of motion and worsening pain. In addition to massage, soft tissue mobilization, and other treatments, your chiropractor may use spinal manipulation to realign the vertebrae in your spine and reduce stiffness. Misaligned vertebrae can press on nerves and cause muscles and tendons to tighten. Once your vertebrae are correctly aligned, you may notice that flexibility improves.
  • Get Rid of Scar Tissue. Your body reacts to an injury by creating new tissue around the injured area. Although this reaction is certainly helpful initially, scar tissue buildup restricts your movement and triggers pain. Chiropractic treatments break up scar tissue that can limit your flexibility and range of motion.
  • Decrease Inflammation. Inflammation, a major factor in pain and stiffness, can be worsened by misaligned vertebrae. Realigning the vertebrae not only reduces pressure on nerves and tissues but also relieves inflammation. In a research study published in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies, researchers noted that spinal manipulative therapy reduced the production of inflammatory agents in people with low back pain. Although this study focused on low back pain, spinal manipulation could have the same effect on inflammation throughout the body.

During your visit, your chiropractor may also show you a few exercises that will strengthen your muscles, eliminate muscle imbalances, and decrease your risk for developing tendinitis in the future.
