American Masters Presents U.S. Broadcast Premiere of HOPPER: An American love story, January 2 on PBS

J.K. Simmons and Christine Baranski voice Edward Hopper and Josephine Nivison Hopper in this intimate documentary

Best known for iconic and enigmatic works including “Nighthawks,” “Chop Suey” and “House by the Railroad,” realist painter Edward Hopper has inspired countless artists and filmmakers, from Alfred Hitchcock to Ridley Scott to the creators of “The Simpsons.” But little is known about Hopper’s own influences. American Masters – HOPPER: An American love story reveals the man behind the brush and explores how his marriage to fellow artist Josephine Nivison Hopper shaped his art and career. American Masters – HOPPER: An American love story premieres nationwide Tuesday, January 2 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings), pbs.org/americanmasters and the PBS App.

Featuring a generous selection of Hopper’s evocative images, revealing research and rare archival footage, American Masters – HOPPER: An American love story offers an exploration into his complex life, and how he became an enigmatic yet wildly popular artist. Hopper’s story is further illuminated through readings of letters and diary entries, voiced by Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”) and Emmy Award winner Christine Baranski (“The Gilded Age”) as Edward and Josephine, respectively. Isabel May (“1923”) also voices Hopper’s earlier, secret romantic interest Alta Hilsdale.

American Masters – HOPPER: An American love story reveals that one cannot understand Edward Hopper without understanding his relationship with his wife, Jo. Before Hopper became one of the most well-known American artists, he sold his first painting, “Sailing,” for $250 and did not sell another for 11 years. His fortune changed dramatically when he met fellow artist Josephine Nivison in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Nivison becomes Hopper’s primary model, marketer and muse. Her candid diaries chronicle her experience giving up her own promising career to take on the management of her husband’s work to boost his reputation and sales. With excerpts from rare television interviews, the film captures Edward Hopper’s peculiar personality and insight into his own art, as well as Josephine’s reflections on her sacrifice for him.

HOPPER: An American love story will also kick off efforts for the recently announced American Masters Visibility, Inclusion and Accessibility (VIA) Initiativewhich aims to build upon the series’ commitment to presenting programming for, by and about disabled communities. The digital version of the film and its accompanying trailer will be the first to feature extended audio description, open captioning and onscreen ASL interpretation.

Complimentary Fine Wine Tasting at Savour, Saturday, Dec. 16, 2 – 4 pm

THIS SATURDAY, December 16, 2 – 4 pm

COMPLIMENTARY

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH MORGAN DOWNS, SAVOUR’S NEWEST STAFF MEMBER AND FRENCH WINE EXPERT

Morgan Downs, our newest Savour staff member and French wine expert will be pouring Saturday. Morgan grew up in Rockport and attended Rockport High School. After obtaining his history degree from Salem State, he went to France and taught English there. In France, he worked in a wine cellar and received his Sommelier certification. He is back in the states pursuing a career in wine, with a strong interest in importing French wines. So come down and say hello and try some wonderful wines from some of our favorite regions, including the Loire and Provence.

WINES

Champagne Demière-Ansiot Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, France

Varietal: Chardonnay Alc.12%

Based exclusively in the Grand Cru village of Oger in the Cote des Blancs south of Epernay, site of Champagne’s most famous Chardonnay terroirs, Demière-Ansiot is a discreet but renowned producer of grower Champagne. The 3.5 hectare estate’s primarily south-east orientation ensures optimal maturity for the vines which average 40 years in age, seated on chalk soils emblematic of the region. Their primary objective is offering Champagnes of an average age of 7-10 years without sacrificing acidity, hence no malolactic fermentation occurs during vinification. The Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru rests 30 months on lees, double the minimum for a non-vintage Champagne, following which the bottles sojourn a minimum of 6 years in the domain’s cellars before commercialization. Only the greatest of vintages are vinified apart, thus the Brut non-vintage benefits from the greatest vines of the domain and is in no wise a ‘second wine’. A modest 4g/L dosage provides for a supremely fresh wine, full of pear, pastry and citrus, equal to accommodating the noblest of shellfish or caviar. $64.99

Cave de Turckheim 2018

Alsace, France

Varietals: Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Alc. 13.5%

A blend of Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois as often are Alsacian bottles labeled as Pinot Blanc, this wine, from a particularly strong vintage, is at its apogee. The Cave de Turckheim, an important producer in Alsace, has been certified organic for well over a decade, and vinifies every variety of wine present in Alsace, much of it from estate-owned plots. Produced on sandy soils, with apple, pear and peach notes on the nose and a bright acidity, this wine will accompany a host of aperitif, seafood, white fish and pork based dishes with equal success. $ 18.99

Domaine de l’Enclos 2021

Chablis, Burgundy, France

Varietals: Chardonnay, Alc. 12.5%

Spread over 29 hectares on either side of the river Serein, Domaine de l’Enclos has been certified organic (Ecocert) since 2005. Two brothers, Damien and Romain Bouchard, own and manage this domain run out the monks’ quarters of the former Abbey of Pontigny, producing wines in every echelon of appellation in Chablis (Petit-Chablis, Chablis, Premier Cru and Grand Cru). The harvest is entirely manual. Since 2016, the domain benefits from its underground chais, from whose pneumatic press the sole runoff vinifies in stainless steel, fermented using only indigenous yeasts. 18 months of aging follow in stainless steel and barrels. The AOC Chablis derives its origin from 15.3 hectares spread over the towns of Chablis, La Chappelle and Beine. Both fruity and mineral, on the fleshier side for Chablis, this wine will accompany oysters, baked white fish and other similar fare now or anytime in the next five years. $32.99

Bernard Magrez ‘La Destinée de Clément V’ 2018, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhone Valley, France

Varietals: Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Clairette, Roussane, Alc.13.5%

Clément V was the first of the Avignon Popes, and also the owner of the Chateau which bears his name in Pessac-Léognan in the Bordeaux region, now the most famous property of Bernard Magrez. In honor of this pope, under whose efforts the court of Avignon spurred the rise of the southern Rhone’s greatest terroir, Mr. Magrez has inaugurated his own production at Chateauneuf-du-Pape, producing both red and white wines under the appellation. Both are eminently age-worthy; the 2018 white is drinking quite well already. Brilliant minerality from a multi-parcel selection balances ample substance for a brilliant pairing for the widest array of seafood, from shellfish to bluefish, or indeed with roast veal. $69.99

Chateau Pipeau 2019, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux, France

Varietals: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Alc. 14.5%

Now in their 4th generation of ownership, the Mestreguilhem family guides this 25-hectare domain, producing one single wine. Limestone and clay soils, vines averaging 40 years of age, combined with optimal viticultural practices to concentrate maturity (green harvest, leaf-thinning), result in a decadent, powerful Saint-Emilion Grand Cru ready to drink within a few years. Fermentation occurs in steel and concrete, aging in partially new oak. A decade’s cellar stay possible, decanting obligatory. A noble cut of beef, big game, or indeed lampray in sauce bordelaise should do the trick. $44.99

Tenuta Carretta ‘Cascina Bordino’ 2016

Barbaresco Riserva, Piedmont, Italy

Varietals: Nebbiolo Alc. 14%

Tracing its origins in 1467, Tenuta Carreta in Piobesid’Alba is a venerable estate to the north of Alba, encompassing 80 hectares in total. The 3.5 hectares composing their Barbaresco Riserva come from the town of Treiso on steep, well-exposed hillsides comprised primarily of sand and marl soils. Long maceration (10-12 days) extracts a wealthy sensory material in color and aroma, which 36 months of tonneau and large-barrel aging then refine and harmonize. Violet, rose and ripe fruit with spices characterize the bouquet, which red meat and big game will accompany with dignity. $59.99

And don’t forget to check out what’s new in our beer case, including two juicy NE IPAs and a clean, refreshing rice lager from East Regiment Brewing, a veteran-owned brewery in Salem and a crisp new lager and a smooth, refreshing kolsch from Rockport Brewing.
