WINES
Quinta do Ribeiro Santo Pinha Branco
Varietals: Malvasia Fina, Bical, Encruzado, Alc. %12.5
The Quinta do Ribeira Santo is an ancient property once belonging to the Catholic Church, and featuring one of the few perennial streams in the area, the Holy River, the Ribeira Santo. Owner and winemaker Carlos Lucas has over 25 years experience in the cellars of Portugal, Spain, and southern France. Carlos makes complex and compelling wines from the indigenous varieties planted on the property, including Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinto Cão, and Encruzado, perhaps Portugal’s finest white wine grape. This blend of Malvasia Fina, Bical, and Encruzado is destemmed and fermented at a very low temperature to preserve primary fruit aromas and bottled after a short rest in stainless steel tanks. Clear and transparent straw yellow in color, it presents aromas of citrus tropical fruits such as pineapple and green apple. In the mouth it has a lively acidity, well balanced with a dry and long finish. Pairs well with light dishes such as lobster, fish, Sicilian lemon risotto, fresh pasta. $17.99.
Vinos de Viento Amber, Aragon, Spain
Varietal: Moscatel del Alejandria, Alc. 12%
This natural, skin-contact wine is produced from 100% Moscatel del Alejandria, old vines dry-farmed at 2,000 feet of elevation on poor, rocky, calcareous-clay soils. Harvested at dawn and cold-fermented in stainless steel using natural yeasts and spontaneous fermentation, then long lees contact and bottling with minimal sulfites. A classic amber wine with earthy tobacco-leaf aromas and underlying bright Muscat fruit; it has a long, succulent finish. Pairs well with lamb, roasted or caramelized vegetables, and eggplant. $24.99
2018 Shilda Winery Mukuzani Red, Republic of Georgia
Varietals: 100% Saperavi, Alc. 12.5%
The Shilda Winery is a family owned and operated winery with the perfect blend of tradition and modernity. The ultramodern winery constructed in 2015 is packed to the brim with the latest French and Italian winemaking technology, brought to bear on the ancient grape varieties and varied terroirs of the Kakheti region. Shilda is a beautiful village dating to the 14th Century located on the foot of the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountain range, facing south into the valley of the Alazani River, on the northern flank of the Kakheti wine region, in the Kindsmarauli Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
Mukuzani (Saperavi) is from the Mukuzni micro-zone within Kakheti, grapes come from the best vineyards, selected for the terroir, vineyard age, and yield per hectare, among other factors. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand to ensure their protection and integrity. This wine is oak-aged for several months and develops greater complexity with time. The wine is dark ruby red, with pleasant aromas and a velvety palate of black currant and dried red fruits, followed by a long and balanced finish. Pairs well with hearty beef stew, Barbequed pork, pizza and cheese-stuffed pasta. $14.99
Finca el Navazo Merum, Jumilla, Spain
Varietals: 50% Monastrell, 30% Syrah, 20% Petit Verdot, Alc. 14.5%
Located in southeastern Spain straddling the border between Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha, Jumilla is a mountainous region of plateaus, hidden valleys and spiky dividing ranges. The climate is transitional-continental, with the Mediterranean moderating the otherwise pretty severe climate of hot dry summers and long, cold winters. The white wines of Jumilla are bright and generally crisp, while the red wines of are dark, ripe and succulent. Permitted varieties for whites are: Airén, Macabeo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Moscatel de Grano Menudo (aka Muscat a Petits Grains), Malvasia, and Pedro Ximénez. For red wines, permitted varieties are Monastrell (aka Mourvedre, Mataro), Cencibel (aka Tempranillo), Garnacha Tintorera, Garnacha, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Red wines dominate and of those the primary grape is Monastrell, which makes up some 85% of total plantings. Merum, from the Latin Merus (“pure”) is a Roman term for wine unmixed with water- that is pure, unadulterated. Noted winemaker Juan Jimenez produces Merum to represent the purity and intensity achievable with his beloved Monastrell grape, balanced and made more elegant by the addition of a touch each of Syrah and Petit Verdot. Merum pours a deep ruby color. Oak-spiced dark berries, licorice and a hint of musky herbs are present on the powerful nose. It is sappy and focused on the palate, offering chewy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that turn sweeter as the wine opens up. It shows good energy and lift on the smoke-accented, appealingly fruity, persistent finish, which is given shape by dusty, slow-building tannins. Pairs well with roasted pork, lamb, barbecued beef. $19.99
Bernard Magrez L’Aurore de Gascogne Le Douceur de Vignes, Gascony, France
Varietal : Gros Manseng, Alc. 12%
Gascony is the region in southwest France that sweeps south from the Bordeaux region down to the Pyrenees Mountains and the Spanish border. The Cotes de Gascogne appellation is slightly inland, nestled behind the pine forests of Les Landes, 5,000 square miles of former marsh, moor and dune-field that was stabilized with maritime pine tree plantations in the early 1800s. Born in Bordeaux in 1936, Bernard Magrez left school at 16 to begin trading wine. Over the decades, he has built a formidable firm owning no less than forty-three individual domains, including several of Bordeaux’s most famous Crus Classes. In fact, he is the only individual to own 4 separate Cru Classe Chateaux. Today Magrez has properties all over the world, and a yacht racing team. At Magrez’ estate in the Cotes de Gascogne, he produces two wines, both made from 100% Gros Manseng. The dry version is a classic Cote de Gascogne, dry, crisp, and clean. The Aurore de Gascogne Le Douceur de Vignes, however, is his masterpiece from this estate: lightly sweet, with heady floral aromas and a long delicate finish. Pairs well with a lunchtime picnic, afternoon fruit and cheese board, or to accompany a cheese selection after dinner, especially blues. $17.99

Gloucester Firefighters respond to a fire that may have been started by welding this morning on Marina Drive. (Courtesy Gloucester Fire Department)

GLOUCESTER — Fire Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department extinguished a structure fire that injured a resident on Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday, July 31, at approximately 10:39 a.m., the Gloucester Fire Department was called to 20 Marina Drive for a report of a structure fire.
Companies arrived to find a two-story, single-family home with an attached garage fully involved with fire, and a resident who evacuated the home on his own suffering from injuries. That resident was taken to Beverly Hospital for treatment.
Firefighters used two, 2 1/2 inch hose lines to quickly knock down the main body of the fire before entering the garage to contain the flames to the attached garage. Several flammable containers and an oxygen tank burned inside the garage, causing what appeared to be small explosions as the gases in the containers vented and fueled the fire.
The main body of the fire was knocked down by 11:09 a.m., and the fire was fully under control by about 11:20 a.m.
The home’s attached garage is likely a total loss, but fire damage was contained to the attached garage. The rest of the home suffered smoke damage.
The family that lives in the home will be displaced, but reported having family to stay with in the area.
Rockport firefighters covered Gloucester stations while companies battled the blaze, and eventually responded to the scene to provide additional manpower.
“Crews did an outstanding job attending to the victim and knocking the fire down quickly,” said Chief Smith. “We’re hoping his injuries are minor and that he is released soon.”
The cause remains under investigation by the Gloucester Fire Department, but it appears welding may have been involved.

It was really delicious!
