Gloucester, MA – Salty’s Bagels, started by Amy Whittenburg, is excited to be a part of the local food scene! After a winter spent tinkering with bagel recipes and learning from some talented bakers from Somerville, Portland, ME, and Vermont, Amy has crafted a bagel recipe that local bagel lovers are really enjoying.

In June 2024, Salty’s Bagels joined the Cape Ann Shared Kitchen, kicking off pop-up events every Sunday morning. The community’s response has been encouraging, with many weekends selling out! Customers can pre-order their favorite bagels through Facebook or Instagram Messenger until Thursdays at 5:00 PM.

Salty’s Bagels are made from high-quality ingredients and crafted with care, resulting in a crispy crust and a chewy, open crumb, thanks to a time-honored proofing process that creates a complex and delicious flavor.

“We think our bagels are a nice way to start the day,” says Amy. “It’s been music to our ears to hear how much people are enjoying them.”

At the moment, Salty’s offers plain, sesame, everything, salt, and the popular rosemary salt. We’re working on new options like sourdough, pumpernickel, and gluten-free. Our homemade schmears feature classic plain, scallion, and on occasion jalapeño.

The name:

The name “Salty’s” invites a playful interpretation of what “salty” means to the individual. It might evoke the delightful flavor of sea salt on a freshly baked bagel or hint at a down-to-earth charm.

What Customers Are Saying:

“I made bagels every week until I tasted Salty’s Bagels. Now I am hooked! They are chewy and not too doughy. We love them!” — Naomi from East Gloucester

“Salty’s is the best bagel I have ever had. They are warm and fresh, with a flaky outside and moist inside. I’d love to see them open a full-time shop!” — Maureen, Cape Ann

Do You Have A Senior Pet Suffering From Joint Pain? We Can Help!

The state of veterinary medicine has advanced significantly in recent years and thanks to the availability of more effective medicine, many pets are living longer than they would have years ago. With age however, comes the onset of problems such as arthritis and other forms of pain and inflammation. Conventional pharmaceuticals commonly used to treat pain sometimes have a negative impact on the immune system, GI tract, liver, and kidneys. Additionally, they don’t always work as well as we would like them to – for humans as well as our pets.

CBD is an excellent natural anti-inflammatory which can help your senior pet experience better joint health in their Golden Years. Please stop in for a free consultation for your pet Friday or Saturday 11-4 to speak with a Certified CBD Consultant or call 978-985-4592.

Ernesto Churn Causes Beach Closures in Gloucester

GLOUCESTER – On Wednesday, August 21, the Gloucester Health Department closed Plum Cove, Cressy’s, and Half Moon beaches due to enterococci exceedances.  The department also kept Good Harbor Creek closed following a second day of enterococci exceedances.  The beaches will remain closed until both single test result and/or geomean levels return to normal levels.

Over 37 marine beaches, 21 from Boston and the North Shore, have closed this week because of enterococci exceedance due in part to the churn created by Hurricane Ernesto’s strong currents in combination with astronomical high tides.

The Department will test each day and send the test samples to a Massachusetts Department of Public Health approved laboratory who will test and report the results to the State and the Gloucester Board of Health.  The beaches will reopen once normal thresholds have been met.

Beach visitors are advised not to swim at these beaches until reopened because of the risk of illness.  Exposure to enterococci can cause urinary tract infections, wound infections, upper respiratory and intra-abdominal illness, and other serious health conditions. Beach goers should respect all posted signage regarding beach closures.

For more information regarding beach closures and test results visit the Massachusetts Interactive Beach Water Quality Dashboard.

Gloucester Fire Department Knocks Down Electrical Fire at Shore Road Home

Note: An earlier version of this release mistakenly said that the fire occurred on Wednesday, not Tuesday. GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department extinguished an electrical fire Tuesday on Shore Road. A 911 call at 2:54 p.m. reported a fire at 41 Shore Road. A preliminary investigation determined that a contractor working at the home next door did excavator work affecting underground electrical service at 41 Shore, resulting in a fire in the electrical panel. Two people were inside 41 Shore at the time of the incident. They safely evacuated their home with their pet, and no one was injured. They will be displaced temporarily, until repairs are completed at their home. Chief Smith praised his crews for reacting quickly and keeping the fire in check while waiting for National Grid to turn off power in the area. The fire affected the entire electrical system at 41 Shore, with the plumbing also affected during the incident. “Our crews worked swiftly to avoid a spread of the fire,” Chief Smith said. “Their work prevented the fire from becoming a larger incident.”
