Fishing Report: 6-21-2013
The overall fishing over the past week has been one of "transition", from very good at the beginning of the week to just fair from mid week on. That’s not to say that "all" locations from Cape Ann to the Merrimack River were off, but Joppa Flat was affected negatively by the heavy rainfall and the stripers that were up on the flat moved to cleaner water outside at the river mouth and along the beaches north and south. We had a very good day Monday fishing flies , topwaters and soft plastics just outside the river mouth. The river mouth was again super clogged with all sort of boats drifting, trolling or anchored up and catching stripers with live macks, clams or chunks, a very scary place!Later in the week I had the good fortune to fish with Capt Paul Rogato and we got to fish a few of his new 2013 line up of surface plugs. These new plugs were a blast to fish with as the stripers would track and smack the plug until they owned it! Watch the video. These plugs are available at Fin & Feather, Surfland and First Light Anglers.

Update: It’s Been Decided. The GMG Gloucester’s Best Italian Sub Challenge Judging Has Just Commenced- Results Coming
Click the arrow to watch the set-up ordering video-
So I’ve got an idea for a challenge.
Top four nominations for best Gloucester Italian Sub as submitted in the comments on this post.
To submit a nomination you click the title of this post and then under the post where it says “Leave a comment”, click that and write the name of the sub joint who you consider makes the best Italian Sub in Gloucester.
Nomination period runs through Friday at 8PM.
Once we tally up the top four sub shops according to your nominations, 4 GMG contributors independently and at the same time order the exact same subs to go from the nominated sub shops. We pick them up and bring them back to the dock.
Then we place them on the digital scale for the Weigh In. We will divide the weight into the price and come up with the best value weight wise. Then we cut it in half and then in quarters to look at the cross section for the equal distribution of meat. If a place loads up the sub in the middle and leaves the ends empty they will be exposed.
Then we each take a quarter of the sub and grade based on taste.
We will present the findings in a post to the readership.
I’m pumped for this challenge!
So start sending in your nominations now in the comment section of this post (again if you don’t see words that say leave a comment directly below this post then click on the title of the post and you should see where you can submit a nomination)
Also please share the link through Facebook or twitter using the buttons below the post to get the most nominations as possible.

This was taken from my BlackBerry through my car windshield while at the red light on Boylston Street facing the Memorial. Granted not the best quality pic, especially since I had to turn my wipers off and it was still lightly raining, but still a kinda cool effect.
I got the chills when I saw it appear so bright and wondrous above the Memorial, thought it was a great symbol of triumph after tragedy and things like The One Fund that people, foundations, corporations and the City donated to so generously to help support the survivors, $54MM raised as of today and still growing.

Hi Joey,
Please find attached an ad for a photo workshop for teens that Simone Salvo (simonesalvo@gmail.com) is running at the end of this month and the first week of July. It is a great opportunity for young artists and very reasonably priced. It would be great if you could pass it on through the newsletter!

MBBS #2 Wicked Graylock Seacock From Al Bezanson
Joey_____
Another random photo from the Maine Boat Builders Show. This caught my eye because I have battled a few corroded frozen seacocks in inaccessible places. When the frozen seacock wins you may be floating dangerously.
The Graylock Seacock System booth was manned by two young brothers from the Cranberry Isles. I spent some time with them and this is what Seth Gray told me, “The idea for the project came from my father, Ed Gray. He had the idea for years but just didn’t know how to put it into action. For my senior design class at Wentworth (in 2011) I chose to take his idea and make it practical. Out of that senior project came our first design, which has evolved since then into the display at the show. Years and years of working on the water and working on systems aboard boats led us to the conclusion that our system needed to be both rugged and simple.”
Check out their website and the installation in the Cranberry Isles Water Taxi.

MS Plane Pull event
Dear Joey,
Each year a group from Cape Ann participate in the Plane Pull at Portland International Jetport, with Federal Express, to raise money for the National MS Society.
There are a great number of people on Cape Ann afflicted with horrible disease, and each year Frank Rich organizes this group of people to pull the enormous 757 across the runway of the Jetport! This year, our group, Team Forza Azzurri, needs to raise more money for the event.
Please post the attached poster on GoodMorningGloucester? You have a wonderful readership and I know it is the best way to reach the greatest number of people!
Thanks again for everything you do for our community!

They’re in thick down on the Cape and headed up this way. Meanwhile, they’re $7.99 a pound down at the supermarket.
BTW, if you say they’re "oily", that means you’ve never tasted one!
Call them what you like:
γοφάρι (gofari) or λουφάρι (loufari) in modern Greek
"lufer" in Turkish
or луфарь/lufar in Russian
because these guys live and feed worldwide.
If you had one bite you, you can call them snappers or choppers.
Or just call them what they are:
BLUEFISH!!!!!

2013 International Dory Races Set For Saturday June 22nd, 10 AM
After some exciting elimination races last week the stage is set for Gloucester to host our Canadian challengers in the 61st annual International Dory Races. This is an exciting week for dory racing enthusiasts, dory committee members, and the general public to witness tradition, skill and athleticism wrapped up in the friendly competition of dory racing between 2 nations. Saturday’s festivities will start with a pancake breakfast at 8AM followed by the dory races at 10AM. Competitors from Nova Scotia , Canada will come to Gloucester to compete in 5 divisions of 2 person team dory racing: Juniors (18 & under), Mixed Doubles, Women, Men Over 40, and Men Open. This is a great family event unique to Gloucester and Lunenburg NS that shouldn’t be missed. The 2013 IDRC Races will be dedicated to 3 members who recently passed away. Robert “Woody” Greeke, Fred Purdy Jr., and George Dearborn were all involved in the IDRC in different ways, but shared a passion for dory rowing that will live on in dory rowers for years to come.
Please find attached a schedule of events for the upcoming week. I hope all of our members and friends will make every effort to attend this week! Those who would like to volunteer to help out Gina Lampasi with the Awards Banquet, please email ginarow@gmail.com .
