Cape Ann Chamber Launches Drive for Special Cape Ann License Plate
Cape Ann Chamber Launches Drive for Special Cape Ann License Plate
Reaching out to the Cape Ann community for license plate design proposals.
The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce today announced the kick-off of the organization’s initiative to create a special Cape Ann License Plate. Following months of preliminary planning work, including the creation of a Cape Ann License Plate task force and consultations with the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), the Chamber is now moving into the design and public outreach phase of the license plate drive.
From now through October 15 the Chamber is reaching out to the Cape Ann community at large, inviting the submission of design ideas to create a distinctive and compelling image for Cape Ann’s special license plate. The license plate design competition is open to all who love and treasure Cape Ann, including residents and visitors, professional and amateur artists and graphic designers, the young and the young at heart.
All proceeds from the special Cape Ann license plate will be used for the sole purpose of marketing and promoting Cape Ann and the Cape Ann communities of Essex, Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Rockport. “There is tremendous support and enthusiasm among the Chamber’s Board of Directors for this initiative, and we are thrilled to have this opportunity to raise a significant and sustained new source of funding to support Cape Ann tourism,” said Chamber C.E.O. Robert Heidt.
The RMV contracts with 3M to assist in the design and manufacture of special license plates, and designs are contained on reflective sheeting on the aluminum plates. All Cape Ann license plate design submissions must conform to the design specifications and restrictions detailed here. The RMV advises: “When it comes to the design of license plates, Simple is Better!” View a sample license plate here.
The Cape Ann License Plate task force will review all design submissions and choose three finalists, whose designs will be submitted to the community for a final round of public input. The winning designer will win a prize of $1,000, while the two runners up will receive prizes of $250 each. (Please note that prizes will be awarded upon issuance of the first Cape Ann license plates.)
“With so many creative Cape Ann people putting their artistic and design talents into this initiative, the new Cape Ann license plate is certain to become a top seller, not only locally but across the state,” said Chamber President Ed Collard.
The Massachusetts special license plate program is authorized and guided by the provisions of section 2F of Chapter 90 of the Massachusetts General Laws. Under the law, once the Cape Ann license plate design has been selected and approved, the Chamber must collect at least 1,500 applications (together with the $40 special plate fee with each application) before manufacture and distribution of the special Cape Ann can begin. The application fees will be held in escrow until the 1,500 threshold is reached.

Cape Ann Art Haven and The Hive Center celebrated their 5 year and 1 year anniversaries on August 27
Cape Ann Art Haven and The Hive Center celebrated their 5 year and 1 year anniversaries on August 27. Over the past five years, we have emerged as important members of downtown Gloucester, serving hundreds of youth, artists and emerging artists. Our founder David Brooks expressed deep appreciation to all those who have been the backbone of the success that Art Haven has seen over the years. “It has been amazing to see so many amazing people willing to lend a hand to make it all possible. We have been blessed and are excited to have the support as we look to the future at all that is to come.”
Our anniversary party drew over a hundred people to The Hive and its success was largely due to the support of various donors. We have many “Thank You“s to share! Chive Catering and Sustainable Event Planning provided all the delicious food, which was made possible through food donations from local farms. Chive runs zero-waste events and composts all their left over products. Ryan & Wood, Cape Ann Brewery Company and Seabreeze Liquors provided all the adult libations. Cape Pond Ice generously donated all the ice to keep the drinks nice and chilled. Most importantly, we want to give a final “shout out”to everyone who came and helped make The Hive truly buzz with life and vitality last Saturday night.
It was such a great time we are planning on making this event an annual summer fling!

MA Film Office announces HBO and Playtone filming 4-part miniseries on North Shore this fall.
Meg Jarrett from Film Cape Ann forwards-
The Massachusetts Film Office announces HBO and Playtone will begin filming Olive Kitteridge next week on MA’s North Shore throughout the fall of 2013.
Olive Kitteridge is an HBO Miniseries presentation of a Playtone production in association with As Is. Executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, Frances McDormand and Jane Anderson. The miniseries is directed by Lisa Cholodenko. Steven Shareshian is co-executive producer; David Coatsworth is producer.
The four-part drama stars Frances McDormand in the title role and Richard Jenkins as Olive’s husband, Henry Kitteridge.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Elizabeth Strout, with a screenplay written by Jane Anderson, Olive Kitteridge tells the alternately poignantly sweet, acerbically funny, and devastatingly tragic story of a seemingly placid New England town wrought with illicit affairs, crime and tragedy, told through the lens of Olive, whose wicked wit and harsh demeanor mask a warm but troubled heart and a staunch moral center.
“We welcome HBO and Playtone to Massachusetts” said Lisa Strout, Director of the Massachusetts Film Office, “and are so pleased to host such a prestigious project with such extraordinary talent.”
This is HBO’s second recent production in the Commonwealth of MA. “Clear History,” with Larry David, Jon Hamm, Kate Hudson, Michael Keaton and Eva Mendes, filmed on the North Shore in 2012. The comedy debuted on HBO earlier this month.
The production has hired and cast locally, and is utilizing Massachusetts-based businesses and services.

Adventure Wins! 1988
A few days after Schooner Adventure arrived in her new home port of Gloucester, she participated in the Mayor’s Cup Race at the Schooner Festival, and won. An amazing accomplishment, as she had a quickly assembled volunteer crew, but clearly great sailors. The race this year will be very, very interesting. My money’s on Adventure.

Sefathia Writes In
Today in Gloucester as I write there is a rush to get ready, who is doing there hair, getting their red carpet dress the buzz is this is the event of the year..I am in Newport enjoying my time with friends and family even though I would be there in a heart beat, I can’t so I am writing this to Felicia (Sister Felicia) as were all now gotten to know her as. I want friends to know that I couldn’t be more proud of her. Not because of the cook book but the dedication behind it, proud of her family( husband, children, mother and brother ) who had to endure her crazy long nights to get the recipe down perfect to make sure it was done right, which turned out easy to make and taste delightful. I would go over and really razz her oh come on Sista your grandmother didn’t do this we would laugh and joke but really she got every grandmother Sicilian grandmother’s recipe changed them around figured the little bit of this a little bit of that some of this too and made it a recipe for all and then she would make it to today’s reality of spices and ingredients etc. She made a series of cook books to make sure the Sicilian-culture is kept alive, she made it so our children can cook the old recipes of our ancestry. Pretty amazing if you ask me in between she missed parties, and gathering to finalize the book for over a year we all got a little taste and yes Sister Felicia got a lot of teasing (all in good fun) from the Godmother who she calls Padrina, and we had a lot of fun nights getting crazy ingredients from all over, but in the long run she was determined and tonight is her night well deserved she has made the Sicilians of Gloucester proud, and yes her Padrina couldn’t be more proud of her.
Lots of love Felicia the Godmother Sefatia

‘From Ships to Shores’: Doryman left fishing to pursue painting
Doryman left fishing to pursue painting
By Gail McCarthyStaff Writer
The son of a Gloucester fisherman, the late Paul Francis Frontiero Sr., began fishing with his father at the age of 12.
He did not know then that this would become his way of life for many years. He never finished Gloucester High School because his father was injured while fishing and he had to leave his studies. As a result, he spent many years laboring in jobs at sea.
Frontiero, born in 1925, even worked as a doryman, an avocation that became extinct; with the innovation of the motorized trawler, the dory fishing industry began to wither in the late 1930s. However, he remained in demand on the port’s fishing vessels because of his skills as an engineer and cook.
