The Awesome Foundation Comes to Gloucester
Hi Joey- I’m sure you are aware of this group but maybe not, but I’m proud to say I’m the newest Trustee of Awesome Gloucester and attended my first meeting last night at the Gloucester House. Attached please find a press release about Awesome Gloucester. There are no names of the 20 Trustees listed, honestly I haven’t met all the other 19 yet, but I was excited by the energy, enthusiasm and commitment to Gloucester that I felt in the room last night! Simply Awesome. I hope you will run something so that everyone knows that there is seed money available for all things that make Gloucester Awesome- no strings attached- and the application process is simple.
Happy Holidays,
Grace Giambanco Numerosi
The Awesome Foundation Comes to Gloucester
Anyone who lives in Gloucester knows how awesome this town city is, but few know that a philanthropic group now exists to make Gloucester even more awesome. The name of this group is – as you might have guessed – Awesome Gloucester.
Awesome Gloucester is a local chapter of the Awesome Foundation, a global “experiment in community philanthropy” committed to giving out $1,000 micro-grants each month. The group gives “no strings attached” micro-grants to applicants deemed to have the most awesome idea to enhance the community in some positive way. The local chapter is made up of a board of twenty “trustees of awesome,” all of whom are members of the Gloucester community with an interest in supporting the positive aspirations of others and encouraging a spirit of open innovation in the city.
People of all ages are encouraged to enter project applications for consideration of these monthly micro-grants. Awesome Gloucester is especially looking to fund projects that may not have any other avenue of funding, including project ideas that may be unconventional. Though projects can be awesome in almost any way, Awesome Gloucester seeks to fund ideas that will be significantly enhanced with $1000 cash infusion.
The group is also interested in supporting projects that fall into the following categories: (1) Innovation in Marine/Fishing Industry, (2) Preservation of Maritime Culture and Heritage and (3) and Community Appreciation and Togetherness. Running through each category is a single concern: How is this idea, once implemented, going to make Gloucester more awesome?
To apply, interested teams and people need to fill out a very basic application online:
http://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/gloucester. In a nutshell, to apply, applicants need to answer three main questions:
1. Tell us about yourself.
2. Tell us about your project.
3. Tell us how you’ll use the money.
The deadline for applications is the 15th of each month. From there, the process is pretty simple: The twenty trustees will review and vote for their top three favorite projects. Then, three finalists will be invited to the Gloucester House restaurant for “Pitch Night,” or what some call “$1000 Thursday.” (This happens the first Thursday evening of the next month). Next, the applicants each take a turn making their pitch to the trustees who then vote for the project they want to fund. That night, a winner is announced and given $1,000 in cash on the spot!
The $1,000 micro-grant comes from the pockets of the 20 trustees who each donate $50 a month. As there are no strings attached to the grants, Awesome Gloucester simply wishes each winning applicant the best of luck without placing any demands on them once the money is awarded. The group simply places faith in the goodness of people participating in the process.
Awesome Gloucester has already had its three successful pitch nights at which it awarded “Glosta Lobster”, Cape Ann Art Haven and Kestrel Educational Adventures each $1000.00 grant! How cool is that?!

Square Topsail Schooner Lynx pictured leaving Gloucester harbor Tuesday Dec. 3rd. –Photo by Len Burgess
America’s Privateer Lynx is a square topsail schooner based in Newport Beach, California. She is an interpretation of an American letter of marque vessel of the same name from 1812. The original Lynx completed one voyage, running the Royal Navy blockade; the British captured her in 1813 at the start of her second voyage and took her into service as HMS Mosquidobit.
The replica of Lynx sailing today was designed by Melbourne Smith of the International Historical Watercraft Society, based on historical data, and built by Taylor Allen and Eric Sewell of Rockport Marine at Rockport, Maine. She was launched on July 28, 2001 at Rockport, making her a new addition to the tall ship community. Her port of registry is Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Today, instead of fighting the British like her original counterpart, she serves as a sailing classroom.
The Lynx Educational Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, educational organization, dedicated to hands-on educational programs that teach the history of America’s struggle to preserve its independence.

Daniel C. Dennett Quote of The week From Greg Bover
December 5, 2013
“If you can approach the world’s complexities, both its glories and its horrors, with an attitude of humble curiosity, acknowledging that however deeply you have seen, you have only just scratched the surface, you will find worlds within worlds, beauties you could not heretofore imagine, and your own mundane preoccupations will shrink to proper size, not all that important in the greater scheme of things.”
Daniel C. Dennett, (1942- ) from Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon
Boston born, Dennett spent his early years in Lebanon, where his father, an operative of the OSS, was killed in the Second World War. Later educated at Phillips Exeter, Harvard and Oxford, Dennett nevertheless refers to himself as an autodidact. Now a professor at Tufts University and Director of the Center for Cognitive Studies, he is principally known as a philosopher, humanist, and atheist, having written extensively on free will and a naturalist view of human evolution. The author of more than a dozen books, including Consciousness Explained (1992) Dennett was both a Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellow and received the Erasmus Prize in 2012. An avid sailor, he lives in North Andover, Massachusetts.

Discover Gloucester Holiday & Awards Party Post re: some VIPs
Hey, Joey-
Perfect timing by EJ for featuring Potter Marty Morgan in her post yesterday, as Marty is receiving one of the three Awards that Discover Gloucester will give out at our 3rd Annual Holiday & Awards Party! We all remember, of course, that you were the first to receive one of the Awards 🙂
Marty is being recognized for her many years of work as a founding member of the Cape Ann Artisans, as well as for her thousands of hours of work and love making the Empty Bowl project such a success for The Open Door.
Joanne (Souza) Main will receive an Award for being the champion of the Schooner Adventure. Her many years of blood, sweat and tears to get the Adventure seaworthy has been quite the task- and she did it!
The third Award will go to a wonderful collaboration among Gloucester, Rockport and Essex folks: The four new MA Cultural Districts!
The Gloucester Harbortown, Rocky Neck, Rockport and Essex River Cultural District’s Committees will be recognized for their diligent work.
Everyone is invited to come honor our very worthy recipients & representatives at the Discover Gloucester Holiday & Awards Party on Tuesday, December 10, Noon to 2:30pm, at La Trattoria on Main St. in Gloucester. $20 per person for a delish Italian Buffet, payable at the door to La Trattoria. RSVPs are necessary, so Peter & his crew can plan. Let us know by Sunday if you want to attend to congratulate these fine folks- and we know you do!

Last Catch of the Season
Hi Joey,
We fish 6 lobster traps in the harbor during the season, and this year our last haul was on Sunday. We didn’t catch anything we could keep, but the last trap we pulled up had this Acadian Hermit Crab in it. ‘B’ thought this catch was better than any lobster he’s ever seen, because this crab was so much bigger than the much smaller hermit crabs we find in Wonson Cove during the warmer months. He actually brought it to school to show off before we released it.
According to Lisa Hutchings at the Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport, this crab decided to make it’s home out of a Northern Moon Snail Shell. Hermit Crabs are unlike other crabs and have a soft abdomen that leaves them vulnerable when unprotected. They search for shells from dead crustaceans like moon snails, periwinkles and whelk and make them ‘home’ when they find one that fits. When they outgrow the shell, they need to find a new one, and you can sometimes find two shell-less crabs fighting over the same ‘new’ shell!
Enjoy!

The Rockport Christmas Tree Committee, now in it’s 115th year, is Rockport’s oldest ongoing tradition.
Started in the early 1890’s by Rockport grocer Tim Sheehan, the tradition of remembrance is carried on today. Members of the Rockport community 80 years of age and older, shut-ins, residents with illnesses and others are remembered on Christmas Day with the delivery of a fruit basket and cookies. Residents of area housing, nursing homes and local hospitals receive a visit in the days before Christmas. Santa Claus himself visits residents of the Den Mar Nursing Home and presents each resident with a small basket of fruit and other goodies.
On Christmas morning at 10:30AM Santa arrives in Dock Square and gives all the Town children a bag of candy, fruit and goodies in the same tradition of the 1890’s.
Santa’s helpers will be meeting at Spiran Hall on Broadway at 7PM on December 22 to pack the bags and baskets. On Christmas morning volunteers are welcome to meet at Spiran Hall at 9AM to deliver baskets. All you need to help is willingness and a smile.
The Committee needs your help to continue this tradition. We rely solely on volunteers and donations. Donations may be mailed to the Rockport Christmas Tree Committee, % Doreen Carter, 2 Mary Helen Way, Rockport, MA 01966 or dropped off at any Rockport National Bank location or Smith Lumber and Hardware. Online donations thru paypal can be made atwww.rockportchristmastree.org. Donations are tax deductible.
We are all saddened by the loss of our friend and longtime chairman, Ray Smith, but his work goes on through this committee.
If you have a neighbor or friend who you think would like to receive a basket, just let any committee member know. Committee members are Bud Woods, Jay Smith, Gary and Faye Anderson, Nikole Gale, Lisa Littlefield, Doreen Carter, Judy Harris, Mary Helen MacLeod, Linda Johnson, Janice Ramsden, April Beaton, Sally Frithsen, Ruth George, Andrea Ritchie, Wanda Visnick, Jeff and Mary-Kathryn Gray, Judy Bogage, Pat Brown, Chris Murch, Darlene Trumbour and John Thompson or leave a note with name and address at the Lumber desk at Smith Hardware and Lumber.

Hi Joey:
I am having an Holiday Pottery Sale at my in home studio/galleria this coming weekend, Saturday, Dec 7th and Sunday, Dec 8th, from 11-5, and was hoping you would post this invite for me. This year my wonderful husband Steve built a studio for me in our home, where I make and fire pottery, and then he created a cozy gallery to showcase my pots.
I am mostly making functional pottery such as mugs, bowls, berry bowls, and more bowls, ornaments, vases and of course more bowls …LOL, however, I have also started making wall art that includes local fish, such as cod, red fish, flounder and haddock, and religious wall crosses. Guess I have no idea where this will all take me, but I am having a good time with it. I hope you stop by also…
Thanks

Great for all ages, but especially those who speak French or can read subtitles. I’ve attached the Press Release, a smaller pdf and jpeg. Not sure which works best for you. Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving – now on to Christmas!
Thanks for all that you do for Cape Ann!

Rockport Granite Company’s vessel captains
Joey,
The attachment is a very clear 1922 photo of 15 Captains of Rockport Granite Company vessels.
At that time the company operated quite a fleet 17 of stone sloops and schooners as well as steam tugs, lighters and barges. Their schooners and big sloops delivered granite products up and down the atlantic coast between Cape Ann and Virginia.
–
Only one of the captains has been identified. He is Capt. William Poland of Gloucester who was captain of the Stone Sloop, “Albert Baldwin” and he is standing far left in the picture with a spy glass under his arm. I know that Capt. Ben Paschal was captain of the sch. Ervin J. Luce” and Capt. Gene Weber of Gloucester captained the schooner “George R. Bradford” but they and the other 12 men are not yet identified. I would be grateful if any GMG readers can identify other men in this amazing picture. I hope to share the names of the other men with the Cape Ann Museum and with Les Bartlett who is writing the history of the Rockport Granite Company.
Thanks,
Bill Hubbard
