1954 Good Harbor Beach- Those Were The Days, Weren’t They Virginia?

Hi Joey, Listening to your recent podcast, I thought “What can I do to spice things up for the guys?

Then I remembered some old snapshots I have of the Summer of 1954 on Good Harbor Beach. The Bodybuilders, members of the Old YMCA Weightlifting Club, would get together on Saturday afternoons at 3 o’clock and put on an exhibition of strength and entertainment I would call them the Beach Clowns You can see they were outstanding performing body lifts, pyramids, cartwheels, hand to hand, you name it. What a joy to watch them and a delight to their audience on the beach, every Saturday afternoon.

The first photo is my husband, Bob McKinnon, lifting Bob Bruce. Next photo Joe Orange lifting Bob Bruce. My Bob also had many poses with the Dickman twins, John and Charlie. Last photo is me eight months pregnant with my husband and Joe Orange. You have to agree these were the Strong Men of the greatest generation. All WW2 Veterans, home from the war and having a fun time. My husband and Joe Orange, also Tony Mattos, are the only guys left from the photos, but we have these precious memories. Virginia (Frontiero) McKinnon.

GMG Open Topic Of Discussion Of The Week- Wood Stoves vs Pellet Burning Stoves vs BioBricks

So before you start reading please consider contributing to the deiscussion on this topic by clicking where it says “Leave a comment” below the post.  If you get the email at the end of the night you can add to the discussion by clicking on the title of this post and adding your comment where it says “Leave a comment” below the post.  Thanks.  I’m really obsessed with the topic right now and I’m excited to read what you all have to say.

The idea of the new “GMG Open Topic Of Discussion Of The Week” Is To Talk about an interesting topic and beat it to death in the comment section.  Hope you like it and feel free to subit other topics for upcoming weeks.

A friend of mine has a killer pellet stove.  You go into the room where the pellet stove is roaring and no matter how frigid it is outside you are warm and comfortable in his house.

I hate the cold.  Despise it actually.  Winter is for the birds as far as I’m concerned. I want to be comfortable and being cold does not equate to being comfortable in my book.

How much could I charge for a seminar to teach people how to look for things on the internet using a search engine?

image

You may think I’m kidding but I’m dead serious.

Or maybe the President of the United States could pay me to do a national public service announcement campaign explaining how to do it.

What would I need like a 30 second spot on all the major networks on how to point your computer to Google and type the words of the subject that you are looking for and then hit the enter button.

Is that even 30 seconds?  Maybe I could speed talk my way through it in 15 seconds and we could buy double the air space.

This is but one question of about the 20 emails I get a day asking me to find things that had been on the blog a previous day or last week-

Recently you posted sista felicias recipe for haddock chowder.  I failed to keep it.  Can you please send it to me?

Thanks

My response-

Good Morning 🙂

Try this

go to this site-

https://goodmorninggloucester.com/

then go to the top right corner where the search box is.

once you locate the search box type in “Haddock Chowder”

I bet you find the recipe.

Alternatively you could go to www.google.com

Once there you could find the search box and type in goodmorninggloucester haddock chowder

I bet that would do the trick as well.

have an awesome day

Now if I took my time to respond this calmly to every person that asks me on a daily basis to find something that had been on the blog before I’d never have time to actually produce any content.

What I wanted to do was tear what little bit of hair that I have left out of my scalp and scream because I just can’t understand how hard it is to perform an internet search or what the disconnect is that people are unwilling to perform one.  Is it possible in this day and age when Google is one of the largest companies in the world and part of the Fortune 500 that people don’t know it exists or what it is for?  It is clearly obvious that that disconnect exists for a huge number of the population.  Otherwise I wouldn’t get 20-30 emails a day asking me to find previous posts for people.

This is why the Government giving me a ginormous grant to do a PSA on how to perform internet searches would be probably the best money they ever spent.  Think about the productivity gains you would get from educating what my conservative estimate is 20% of the population who do not know how to search the internet for what they are interested in.

Please for the love of god, help spread the word of this thing called Google– so that all of mankind will benefit and middle aged balding bloggers will be less inclined to tear what little hair they have left on their head out.

Please and Thank You.

Hi Joey,

I hope this e-mail finds you well. I am not sure if you remember me but we worked together on a project for “Taste of the Times” with Jackson Cannon at my home. My Aunt Terri Gallo and Uncle Gianni Gallo had also worked on the piece. I am writing to you today in the hopes that you will take a few sentences from your blog to help us better reach this community. I am so lucky to be part of the All Star Foundation for UCD. The Urea cycle disorder is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation that results in a deficiency of one of the six enzymes in the urea cycle. These enzymes are responsible for removing ammonia from the blood stream. The urea cycle involves a series of biochemical steps in which nitrogen, a waste product of protein metabolism, is removed from the blood and converted to a compound called urea in the blood. Normally, the urea is transferred into the urine and removed from the body. In urea cycle disorders, the nitrogen accumulates in the form of ammonia, a highly toxic substance, resulting in hyperammonemia (elevated blood ammonia). Ammonia then reaches the brain through the blood, where it can cause irreversible brain damage, coma and/or death. We are on our 4th annual All Star Benefit and would love it if you could mention the event and help us spread awareness. I have attached the sponsor letter and a brief history of Mary Grace (Sanfilippo) Vestal and Michael Vestal. They are both amazing parents who fight every day for this cause and their children. Michael and Marisa both have UCD, older sister Mia is a spunky, healthy, loving big sister. Michael and Grace are both from Gloucester as well as their Families. They now live in wilmington. Grace takes care of Michael and Marisa full time so she can not work. They hold this benefit to help spread awareness, talk about new born screening, and hopefully someday have a cure! They worked in clinical trials for years and last year were able to have a new drug approved by the FDA. Lets help them make this bigger and better!

Its March 1 at the Danversport 6-10 pm and they can call or go on the website for tickets. or email me at alessiat8@hotmail.com

Judy Beavers Has Some Nice Things To Say-

Hi Joey,

Just have to say it again:  Gloucester never disappoints.

Headed up with the family today, from Salem, to spend some time in Gloucester.

Brunch at Alchemy was outstanding.

Main St., shops – better than ever.

Turtle Alley chocolates – simply delicious.

Visit to Good Harbor Beach at sunset – priceless.

How lucky are we all!

No place like it — anywhere.

If There’s a God They Won’t Let Peyton Manning Win Today

image

For no other reason than just wanting to put to rest any discussion with him in the same category as Tom Brady as the Best QB of all time.

It’s very simple why I want the Seahawks to win.  For the love of god I just can’t bear to listen to sports media talk about Peyton incessantly all next year.

Let him lose and let him lose decisively.

In a perfect world Richard Sherman stubs his toe on the first play of the game, Payton Manning keys on his replacement and throws 5 interceptions.

For the record I think Peyton Manning is a classy guy and a great quarterback.  I’m just sick of looking at Tom Brady’s far and away better statistics in just about every category and hearing the sports media talk about Manning as if he is even in the same category of elite QB.

Who do you want to win tonight’s Superbowl?

Oceanside Hotel Menu September 1, 1947 Magnolia MA

Good Evening Joey,

I was going through some papers today and found a dinner menu from the Oceanside Hotel

or the night of September 1, 1947.  My mother, who was a 17 year old nanny,  told me she had saved it from her trip there with the Drucker family for whom she worked.  When I googled the hotel, I found your blog.

I have attached a scan of it.  If this is something that you would like for your collection, I would be happy to forward it.  My mother had kept it folded all these years, so it shows some wear.  I would like very much to give it to someone to whom it means more, either yourself or anyone else, as she passed years ago and it does not hold much sentimental meaning to me.

Hoping you may want it,

Sharon Viola

Theatre in the Pines Prepares for spring performance

Nan Webber, Director, Theatre in The Pines, announced recently that The Heiress, by Ruth & Augusus Goetz will be the spring program in May.

The Heiress, takes place in New York in the 1850’s and the story tells of a shy and plain young girl , Catherine Sloper who falls desperately in love with a delightful young fortune hunter. Catherine lacks the worldliness from realizing the young man proposing to her is not entirely drawn to her by her charm.

Performance of The Heiress will take place on May 15, 16, 17 & 18. at Sprian Hall, located on the corner of Broadway and School Street in Rockport.

Plans are also underway for the September performance of Romeo & Juliet in September at the Shlin Liu Performance Center, 37 Main Street, Rockport.

Further details regarding both performance will be shared as these date near.

Hi Joey,

I’m excited to share the news that a free community sing-a-long to celebrate the life, spirit and music of Pete Seeger has been planned for Friday, February 7 at 7:00 PM at the Lanesville Community Center.
Pete Seeger, one of America’s best-loved folksingers, an untiring activist, environmentalist, and an inspiration to many, passed away on January 27th, 2014.
This will be a participatory evening.  Though a number of seasoned Cape Ann folk performers (roster is still growing!) will attend prepared to lead songs, all are welcome to bring acoustic instruments and a song or story to share.  Song sheets will be available.

We hope the 7:00 start time will encourage families with young children to attend.  It’s fine to bring snacks or non-alcoholic drinks to share if so desired. Spread the word! Bring friends! Bring family! And remember, there is no charge for admission.

Daniel Webster Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

“A strong conviction that something must be done is the parent of many bad measures.”

Daniel Webster (1782 – 1852)

A New Hampshire native and graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College, Webster, a member of the Whig Party, served New Hampshire in the House of Representatives and Massachusetts in the Senate during the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War. He worked tirelessly to preserve the Union, opposing efforts at secession by New England during the War of 1812, and by the South in the 1840’s and 50’s. Although known best for his fiery and (by today’s standards) flowery oratory in the Senate, he also served as Secretary of State in the Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore administrations. Among his many accomplishments, it was Webster who filed legislation introducing pre-paid self-adhesive postage stamps in 1847; his portrait has appeared on Postal Service stamps 11 times, more than most presidents.

Charlie’s Place Odor Of Smoke Reported

Hi Joey
On Friday 1/31/14 an odor of smoke in the building was reported at
Charlie’s Place restaurant on Bass Ave. about 5:00 pm. The latter was
put up to check the HVAC system on the roof as well as checking the
building. I don’t think a cause was found. Recall was sounded soon
after.

NORTH SHORE UNITED WAY GRANTS $5,000 TO OLD FARM ROCKPORT

The Board of Directors of the North Shore United Way (NSUW) have voted to award a $5,000 Discretionary Grant to support the outside deck project at the Old Farm in Rockport, a Cognitive Living and Learning Center for survivors of brain injury, expected to open this spring. When completed, Old Farm Rockport will offer eight units of affordable housing for moderately or severely disabled survivors of traumatic brain injury.  NSUW funding will ensure the deck will be 100% handicap accessible, which is an important part of ensuring future residents enjoy a rich quality of life.

The North Shore United Way awards one-time Discretionary Grants up to $5,000 to launch new or innovative programs on the North Shore or for agencies with emergency needs.  Margo Casey, Executive Director of the NSUW, said “We are very pleased to lend support to this important program.  It not only furthers our goal of developing more affordable housing, but it also opens a supportive community to the growing population of adults with traumatic brain injuries. We were moved to put our support behind a project founded and supported by the family and friends of local residents whose lives have been forever impacted by a traumatic brain injury.”

Peter Noonan, Executive Director, Old Farm Rockport, explains that the deck, “adds a great final touch to the project.”  Peter Robbins, Board Chairman, adds, “Old Farm Rockport couldn’t be more pleased and grateful to partner with and receive North Shore United Way’s support, affording us the opportunity to build a place for the residents to enjoy the seaside sun, air and access to outdoor activities.”

The North Shore United Way invests almost $1M each year in projects that transform lives and improve communities now and for future generations.  NSUW is all about local impact by rigorously vetting and supporting 25 causes that serve children, families, and seniors in eight North Shore communities, including Beverly, Hamilton, Wenham, Ipswich, Essex, Manchester, Gloucester and Rockport.  For more information about funded projects and how to get involved, visit nsuw.org or call 978-922-3966.

Thank you for your time!

As many of you know the kids go to New York to get their medicine. To this point the medicine HPN 100 has been in clinical  trials. We received this email Friday that we wanted to share with everyone. This is a hugh step in the standard of care for kids with born with a UCD’s. The Allstar Foundation can take pride in knowing that we took part in making this happen. Our money helped support the fellowships for the physicians collecting the data for this trail. Thank you so much for all your hard work and support of your special cause.

Hi Everyone,

I am so excited to report that the FDA approved Ravicti (clinical trials were performed under the name HPN-100) this morning for ages 2 years and older.  This is an incredible victory for UCD patients and families!  It has been a 10-year battle, but it has been worth every moment. Thank you to everyone for your support, and for all the patients and families who participated in the clinical trials.  For more information from FDA about the approval:
