Gloucester Area Astronomy Club April 11 Meeting
Eclipses are coming!
At our Friday April 11 meeting, GAAC favorite Jim Koerth will show us everything we ever wanted to know about eclipses in general, the moon in particular, and even more in particular, the two lunar eclipses we’re expecting this year — one in April and another in October. And there are another two eclipses coming up in 2015, so come to GAAC and be prepared!
Jim’s talk will focus on the mechanics of eclipses, lunar and solar, here and on other planets, and will touch on lunar geography and even the role of eclipses in the search for planets around other stars. Come on in for the usual good times and good eats, and a great, informative talk. You’ll leave looking at the moon differently!
The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club meets from 8:00 pm to about 9:30 on April 11 at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street in Lanesville. There are no costs or fees, and the public is encouraged to attend. See more on our Facebook page,http://www.facebook.com, our website athttp://gaac.us, or follow us on twitter, @gaactweet
Dory prep rain delay!
For those of you who read the schedule of events sent to you recently by the IDRC, you noticed we have scheduled a dory prep day at Eastern Ave. Self Storage this Saturday April 5th. But, due to the forecasted rain, we will be moving to Sunday April 6th, meeting around 9 AM. We will need some bodies at least to move the boats around (un-nest a pair). Then, we will be scraping and sanding. The whole process should take less than 2 hours, so if you have some time please come down and lend a hand for a good cause!!
Fiesta Video from 2010-2011
Hi, I’m a big fan of your blog and I thought you might be interested in possibly sharing this short 8mm film that my husband made about St. Peter’s Fiesta with your readers.
I’m a native of the North Shore (my family is from Gloucester) but my husband, Matthew, is from New Hampshire. I brought him to the fiesta and to Gloucester for the first time around 2007 and he instantly fell in love with both. We go to the fiesta every year now and visit Gloucester as often as possible.
He shot the footage for this video at the 2010 and 2011 St. Peter’s Fiesta. He also composed and performed the music (he played guitar and his friend played the violin part). Here’s a link to the video on youtube:
Hope you like it! Thanks for your time!

Downtown Magnolia News From The 525 Including Opening Date! (Former Space OfThe Patio)
Thank you, Joey!
Here’s our mission statement:
Downtown Magnolia is undergoing a revitalization. At the heart of this transformation, is a gathering spot that will bring people together. Owner/Developer Eric Loiacano has partnered with the Serenitee Restaurant Group to build a restaurant that will serve as that meeting place for the community.
Appropriately named 525, the restaurant’s neighbors may be the only ones to get the connection reference, but everyone is going to love the food! 525 will feature creative tavern fare with New England staples, served in a comfortable setting. The bar will boast great cocktails, wines by the glass and ice cold beers. With plenty of outdoor seating available, 525 will be the perfect après beach destination this summer.

"Glosta Skis" at Maine Adaptive Ski-A-Thon!
Hi Joey,
Brian Carlson (Gloucester Coast Guard Alum and Lover of All Things Gloucester) and myself were so very fortunate to be invited to participate in the 29th Annual Maine Adaptive Ski-A-Thon which is held each year at Sunday River. For all of us Gloucester Folk who enjoy skiing, Sunday River is our winter mountain hangout.
Our “Glosta Ski” team was organized by Liz Neumeier (second from left in Team Photo). She is an amazing Fundraiser and very active in our Gloucester Community, most prominently with the Gloucester Stage Company
We needed one more member for our team and this lovely young woman, Julie, asked to join us. Julie was born with only one leg. She – with much enthusiasm – told us that she didn’t have a “disability” just a “different ability”. Man, can she ski!
I pulled out a bunch of lobster buoys from my trash bag (nice touch!) to use as props for the Costume Contest. Explaining that I was not sure how I planned to use them, Julie promptly picked one up and attached it to her belt – see photo. She laughed and we all laughed with her! It was quite a moment and the three of us followed her example and decorated ourselves with the buoys. We had one left over, and Brian made this into “the baby”. Julie won First Prize for Best Individual Costume. She was so much fun and said, “You guys, can I be on Glosta Skis Team next year, too?”
We all have handicaps of some sort, not one of us gets out of this Life unscathed. Isn’t it ALL about how we adapt to them?
It was a very uplifting and emotional event. I am so proud that Gloucester was represented!
Thank you once again for all that you do!
Cheers!
Cindy Hendrickson
