Lisa Steinocher Asks- “Do I Deserve A Sticker?”
Dear Joey,
Do I deserve a sticker? So I’d thought I’d tell you my story so you can decide. My name is Lisa (Swinson) Steinocher. I live in Lawrenceville, Georgia. But I have loved all things Gloucester my whole life. My father was born and raised in Gloucester. The youngest of 8 all born in a little house on Main Street – My dad 80 years ago. A 1952 Gloucester High graduate. The oldest, my Aunt, who I just visited in the nursing home here in Gloucester is 92. My great grand father was a Gloucester fisherman who died at sea in 1914 and is on the memory wall, William McCarthy. My mom (the Italian side) from Boston met my dad while working in Gloucester for the summer. Married, then a job took them to New Jersey, where I was born, then a transfer to Atlanta in 1968 and I’ve been there ever since. But I spent just about every summer of my life in Gloucester. And when my parents divorced in 1981, my dad headed straight back to Gloucester where he settled down on the Annisquam with his wife of 31 years. Before I left Atlanta to come back up here, I looked around my house and realized just how much of Gloucester I keep close to me down home in the south. So I’m sharing a few of the things with you.
This wonderful painting by Paul Frontiero was a wedding gift to my husband and me from my dad and his wife in 1986. It has been hanging ever since. And Mr. Frontiero lived right near one of my Aunts because I remember my dad telling me he just walked over there from my Aunts house and picked this painting out.
These lobster claws that my dad painted came from a 14 + pound Gloucester lobster. My daughter is 2 in this picture, 21 years ago. Both of my daughters brought these to school for show and tell:)

The picture below is my family and my dads mothers side of the family, at Long Beach where I spent all my summers-on the Gloucester side of the beach, the Rockport police didn’t patrol that as much:). I’m near the middle in the navy and red and white stripped suit. Had to be nearly 46 years ago since ill soon be turning 54.
This is what my back patio has looked like for years. The fish net , buoys and lobster pot are from Gloucester.
So many memories and I’m back again, this time just with my youngest daughter, 18 to visit my elderly relatives, run (at least attempt to:) the Fiesta 5k with my daughter and just enjoy the scenery, sun, salt and sand. (And great food!)
So something made me want to share my story and I’ve been wanting a sticker for awhile now since I started reading the Good Morning Gloucester email every night. If I don’t get down to “the Dock” I will send you my self addressed stamped envelope if there are any left.

As far as providing an outlet to what is happening and images and videos behind the scenes of local events I’ve never seen any other type of website anywhere filled with as much incredible content and all being provided by people all doing it unpaid and for the love of it.

Hi Joey
I am on a mission to Stop the Trashing of Good Harbor Beach & would appreciate any help to get the word out to all who go to the beach(s), public parks…on Cape Ann to pick up after themselves.
After going to GHB this week I (along with everyone else I was with) was disgusted to see the condition of the beach, especially at the end of the day.
We went to a beautiful place to enjoy the sunset and found a trashed beach.
Amazing how during off seasons people bring their dogs and pick up their dog’s poop.
Humans go and don’t pick up after themselves.
Trash is more harmful to the eco/environment then dog poop. Yet this happens! I just do not understand why people get away with this.
The Unitarian Universalist Society of Rockport will host it’s annual Summerfaire on Saturday, July 12 from 9 a.m. till 1
p.m. at the church, 4 Cleaves Street, Rockport. In addition to attractions including a silent auction, a book sale,
refreshments, bake sale, art, crafts, and plant sales, face painting, raffles, and the thrift shop, this year’s Summerfaire
will sponsor a special Animal Awareness Project. Special guests from Petco, Animal Krackers, and Cape Ann Animal Aid
will focus on nutrition, adoption, training, and safety for pets; the Cape Ann Vernal Pond team, a bee keeper, and a
foster parrots organization will also be represented. At 1 p.m. the Chicken Coop Group, direct by Dona Lampert, will
perform an animal play. All are invited to this summer celebration that offers fun and information for everyone.

I’m organizing the summer arts programming at Cape Ann Art Haven and wanted to share with the community that Rob Logan of Charba fame will be joining us for the entirety of Painters Week, Monday July 21st to Friday July 25th, from 9 AM to 3 PM each day. Any child entering first through fifth grade is welcome to attend, and scholarships are available for families who qualify. Rob has been sponsored through a grant from Dunkin Donuts and Art Haven is very excited to welcome him back to Gloucester.

New Library Director for Gloucester: Deborah Kelsey
The Board of Directors of the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library is pleased to announce that Deborah W. Kelsey will become our new Library Director in August. She will fill the vacancy left by former Director Carol Gray, who retired in April after 16 years, and Acting Director Freyja Sanger, who will return to her position as assistant director.
Deborah, a native of Essex, is currently the library director at the Memorial Public Library in Medfield, Massachusetts, a position she has held since 2008.
She was the unanimous and enthusiastic selection of the Director Search Committee, which included members of the Library and Lyceum Boards, the City of Gloucester personnel director, regional library professionals and community leaders.
According to Scott Memhard, president of the Sawyer Free Library Board of Directors, “In Medfield, Deborah provided leadership and vision for a busy public library, building strong community engagement, high circulation, public programming for all ages, innovative technology solutions, and creative staff mentoring and development. We look forward to welcoming and embracing Deborah here in Gloucester, and to her bold leadership implementing our Strategic Plan.”
That plan, developed last year by the Library board and staff with community input, aims to make the Sawyer Free Library a more welcoming place to meet Gloucester’s rapidly evolving needs, as well as a center of innovation and community activity.
Barbara Braver, a member of the Sawyer Free Library board who served on the Search Committee, noted: “Although the Committee had a very talented pool of applicants from which to chose, it was obvious to us all from the outset that Deborah’s significant gifts made her the standout candidate.”
Mary Jane McGlennon, a past Board President who also helped with the search, concurred: “This is an exciting moment for the Library and for Gloucester.”
In her career, Deborah Kelsey has also served in various professional capacities at libraries in Natick, Framingham, Wayland, and Needham. She is the immediate past president of the New England Library Association, and a Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners Certified Professional Librarian. She holds a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Simmons College, and a BA from University of Connecticut, Storrs.
Deborah told the Search Committee that “smelling the salt in the air as I was driving into Gloucester, felt like coming home…” She said she looks forward to coming to Gloucester as the capstone of her professional career, further developing the Sawyer Free Library as a space where “the community gathers for inspiration, learning, meeting, and performance”.
Memhard said that among Deborah’s immediate objectives will be working with the library’s board, staff and volunteers to review the library’s collections for relevance; revamping the building’s public and staff spaces; overseeing installation of a modern heating and air conditioning system, and mentoring staff in their professional development.

Hey Joey,
What a spectacular time a group of us Gloucester chicks – and a few select men – had last Saturday celebrating the birthday of our dear friend and GHS alum, Christine Buckley. It was one of those “significant” birthdays that deserves more than just a dinner get together.
Why not celebrate on the ocean, we thought? How many of us grew up here and proclaim our love of the ocean, yet never actually get out on the water? Too many, certainly.
For the mere sum of $10 per person for the Best Party idea ever ( it was my idea so I could be a tad prejudice), we made arrangements to meet friends on the M/V Lady Jillian aka the Gloucester Harbor Water Shuttle.
Our illusory plan was that Chris would be meeting Diana Davis and myself at the Studio Restaurant for lunch. When the two of them arrived, I was stationed at the top of the shuttle ramp, dressed as a Mermaid with a sign proclaiming Ocean Wisdom. We told Chris that she was going for an ocean ride – and what a ride it turned out to be!
Besides the Studio, the shuttle stops at Harbor Loop. GHS Cheerleaders, Kathy (Johnson) Keefe and Holly Davis, in original outfits from many moons ago, greeted us at the dock with a lively cheer.
The third stop is St. Peter’s Landing and a smiling couple adorned in Sou’-wester fishing hats met us there – they were Chris’ daughter and son-in-law, Lars and Heather Muelle.
Now – Chris assumed this was it since we opened some bubbly (only paper cups – no glass onboard) and dove in to delicious snacks.
Chris had no idea we had ONE more Special Guest back at the Studio. It was Whoopi! The place was hysterically laughing, from the restaurant patrons to the surprised tourists sharing this wonderful day with us. Whoopi turned out to be a friend that Chris had not seen for far too long – our own beloved recently retired Director of the Sawyer Free Library – none other than Carol Gray!
I think that Captain Peter Favazza as well as the other guests had as much fun as we did! Stevie Douglas even came on board and recited from Longfellow’s “The Wreck of the Hesperus”; a nice touch from a star GHS hockey player from yonder years.
The Party Train kept moving and ended up at Mile Marker One. The surprises were not over. Who else but Cape Ann’s finest singer-songwriter, Chelsea Berry, would ride her bike over just to sing “Happy Birthday” to our Special friend? Chelsea also presented a gift to Chris from us; VIP tickets to her summer concert at Mile Marker One on July 25th.
The motley crew moved from here to a Buckley family party before we called it a day.

Ten Months of Planning, Rockport Town Reunion is Nearly Here
Dream that began with a Facebook page, now a major town event
A plan that sprang last summer from a collection of friends and acquaintances who met up on a Facebook is about to become a groundbreaking Rockport town event.
The first-ever all-town Rockport Reunion is Saturday, July 5 at the town’s Evans Field baseball park. Hundreds of Rockporters from all generations are expected for a day of food, games, live music and camaraderie.
Planning for the first-of-its-kind event began in September of 2013 when native Jon Cavanaugh launched a Facebook group page called “You Know You Grew Up In Rockport When …” The group now has some 1,500 members sharing stories about old times, reconnecting with classmates and teachers, rekindling friendships and remembering those who have passed on.
“We had no idea it would grow so fast or so big,” says Cavanaugh, one of 13 serving on a steering committee. “This was something that members created themselves. They were the ones who wanted to get together. We never thought it would lead to this.”
Group members raised more than $4,000 by online crowd funding, with hundreds more raised through ticket and T-shirt sales. The project is entirely non-for-profit with all funds earmarked for scholarships, town needs and a return event next year.
There will be live music from area bands from noon-9 p.m., a memorial wall and video, games, lobster rolls, beer and wine, and of course, Rockport’s own Twin Lights tonic. Attendees will wear wristbands of different colors to signify the year of their high school class.
Local merchants and individuals have supported the event with generous sponsorships, and the Town of Rockport allowed the use of Evans Field.
“This is about a town celebrating connections,” Cavanaugh says. “Some of us never left, some of us found our future in cities and towns far away. But we’re all, always, Rockporters.”

“Cruise for Schools” to support the Gloucester Education Foundation
The Gloucester Education Foundation’s (GEF) 2014 summer fundraiser, “Cruise for Schools” is coming Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 5-8pm. The event will be a three-hour sunset cruise aboard Cruiseport’s Beauport Princess to support GEF and its innovative programs in the Gloucester Public Schools.
Highlighting the event will be a special appearance by Gloucester musician Steve Caraway, who is donating his talents to support the schools. The evening will also feature the world debut of the Gloucester District Staff All-Star Band, a musical group of teachers and administrators from the Gloucester Public Schools. Raffles, passed-h’ors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will complete the evening.

We are celebrating our first year of contra dances on Saturday, June 28 with a special dance at the American Legion Hall at 7:30! We are so grateful for the ongoing support and generosity from the individuals and organizations that have maintained this series and made it possible for us to start year two of contra dances on Cape Ann.
