Our Buddy Tom Ellis Of the Schooner Thomas E Lannon Is Involved In A very Special Project-
As captain and owner of the Schooner Thomas E. Lannon for the last 17 years, I’ve met thousands of people. Many stand out,
but one eight year old boy named Collin Keegan is exceptional. I first met Collin on a Saturday morning Kids-go-Free sail.
It was obvious from our first conversation that he was special. Collin has a huge curiosity about the world and likes to share
what he learns with other kids. What better way to do that than through video? After seeing the first edits of this film,
Collin came up with the idea of “Science all around us.” And that became the title of the 5 episode video series we would
like to produce.
I’m asking you to watch this short video about Collin. If you like the idea of getting our youth excited about learning,
you can help by making a kickstarter pledge. Even if you cannot donate, you can help by sharing this video with your
friends, colleagues, or members of the organizations you belong to. And I know you’ll enjoy watching Collin!
Our goal is to produce a pilot video that will attract a distributor for the series.
Check Out The Kickstarter Campaign Video-

Meet Collin Keegan. At first glance, he looks like a normal rambunctious eight-year old. He likes wearing a faded red baseball cap. He carries a pen and a notebook in his pocket just in case he needs to draw a diagram to explain a scientific concept to a friend or peer. He has a charming British accent and an endearing lisp. He’s cute—that you’ll be able to recognize easily—but something special sparks inside this small forty-pound boy when he’s sharing knowledge and learning with others. He has a truly infectious joy of learning and an amazing ability to recognize the creative way science affects and shapes our world. Through Collin’s eyes the rudder and steering wheel of a sailboat become a “mechanical connection system.” He knows intuitively the science that propels every day objects, and he applies scientific concepts and principles in a way that’s truly inspiring.

There comes a time in the whole engagement process where a guy’s gotta have the balls enough to just say- “No, I’m not gonna do a Spice Girls video with you.” Bottom Line. End of Story.
Zero chance this dude ever lives this down from the absolute beatdown his boys are gonna lay on him.
Ward 3 City Councilor Steve LeBlanc and the Community Development Department need your help on November 6th, 7th and 8th when the “Community Build for the Oval Playground” will take place. This is a great opportunity for civic-minded folks to roll up their sleeves, have some fun, and help install a new playground at Palazola Field!
Volunteers are asked to be available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on one of the three community build days. Work will include installing concrete foundations, sorting, erecting and assembling playground equipment. To ensure safety and quality, volunteers will be trained and supervised by an experienced playground site specialist.
Dress in comfortable work clothes and closed toe shoes. Lunch and refreshments will be served.
The “Re-shaping the Oval Playground” project, which is funded by the Massachusetts “Our Common Backyard” program and federal community block grants (with project management funded through the Mass in Motion program), will not only improve the play area off Centennial Ave. near Harvard Street, it will provide more opportunities for kids to play and get fit.
The City is seeking 20 volunteers a day to help in the three-day effort (with an alternative extreme weather day on November 9.) Mayor Carolyn A. Kirk notes that with the “Renewal of Newell” last year and September’s completion of the update to Burnham’s Field, the City continues to build on its successes and create more opportunities for recreation, play, and support of active lifestyles.
Councilor LeBlanc, who reports that the existing equipment will be reused at Riverdale Park, hopes that community members, neighborhood associations and other community groups/organizations will sign up as community build volunteers.
Online volunteer registration is available at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0F4DA9AE28A4F94-community/.
Community members can also contact Councilor LeBlanc at SLeBlanc@gloucester-ma.gov.
Community Development Department Senior Project Manager Stephen Winslow also can be reached at swinslow@gloucester-ma.gov or at 978-282-8007.

And furthering the conversation about local arts, I’m not sure local writers get enough due. It’s non stop with our awesome artists and great for them but let’s all take notice of all the awesome Working Writers in town.
Congrats on being big time relevant.

Students at Manchester Memorial School were treated to a presentation by Nick Bollettieri. The world-famous tennis coach was here for the weekend visiting Manchester Athletic Club’s MAC Tennis program, where he gave private and group lessons to hundreds of up-and-coming tennis players from around New England, including those in the MAC Tennis Academy program.
430 students in grades K-5 were treated to a Q&A with the energetic octogenarian who created the first full-time tennis boarding school that combined on-court training with an academic curriculum. A method that produced 10 number-one world-ranked players, including Andre Agassi, Maria Sharapova, and Venus and Serena Williams.
Bollettieri spoke to students about their school’s core values: Honesty, Effort, Acceptance, Respect and Responsibility, and Thoughtfulness (HEART); as well as the importance of education, working hard, and living a healthy lifestyle.
“A positive attitude gives you a chance to be successful and can make the impossible possible”, Bollettieri told students. “If you feel that you are special, you have to prove that you are special. Don’t ever say I can’t, say I will. If you put everything you have—every ounce of effort—into winning, then you are a winner no matter the final score.”
“Nick is a great example to young people of how discipline and hard work can provide opportunities and lead to great success,” said John Willis, Principal at Manchester Memorial Elementary School.” He has travelled the world motivating young people, and a lot of what he believes in is what we teach our students here.”
Bollettieri’s visit was made possible by the MAC Sports Foundation, which was created in 2012 by Manchester Athletic Club in partnership with the United States Tennis Association (USTA). The mission of the Foundation is to offer scholarships to talented junior athletes who do not have the financial means to reach their goals, as well as to provide grants to schools and community organizations offering youth athletic programs.
Manchester Athletic Club is located in Manchester by-the-Sea, MA, and is the only USTA Training Center in New England and one of only 12 USTA Regional Training Centers in the country. MAC is also home to New England’s professional tennis team, The Boston Lobsters.
Back Row: Tennis legend, Nick Bollettieri, with Manchester Memorial Elementary School Principal, John Willis. Front row: Students: Cole Riehl, Maria Rising, Milo Zeltzer, Nina Zalosh, Lily Stefanovich, Tess Carpenter and Hannah Davis.
Gloucester Democrats collect clothing, phone cards, and clothing for our troops
Once again, the Gloucester Democratic City Committee has organized a collection for our troops stationed overseas. They are gathering clothing (especially underwear and warm socks), as well as phone cards and books. Crossword and sudoko books are among the favorites; so are DVDs. All goods should be brand new, of course.
Items can be dropped off at the Cape Ann Democratic Headquarters in the Main Street Plaza, next to Walgreens. It is open 10am to 6pm weekdays, 9am to 5pm Saturdays, and 2pm to 6pm Sundays. The drive will conclude on Tuesday, November 4.
Thanks!
Deanna Fay
What is it with this new trend with women scrunching their lips up for social media photos?
Can anyone pinpoint when this all started and who made it a “thing”?
Yo, your lips get stung by a bee or somethin?
Weird thing is that most of these women are already attractive so I don’t get the lip move. I get that they’re probably not desperate for a date but what it does reek of is desperate for attention.
Anyway, not that I think we necessarily have a young readership that this would apply to but just in case I can save a youngster that might be reading, not a good look.
Update:
OK,I spotted the trend but apparently I’m way behind on this- www.antiduckface.tumblr.com/ has been on the case for a while now.
Worth a looksie.

Sylvia Plath (1932-1963)
A Jamaica Plain native, Plath wrote and published poetry from an early age. Educated at Smith College, where she edited the college magazine, she received a Fulbright grant to study at Cambridge University in England, where she met and later married poet Ted Hughes. She struggled with depression throughout her life, spending significant time at McLean’s hospital in Belmont and receiving electroshock therapy. Plath is credited with popularizing the confessional poetry genre and won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection Ariel. She survived a number of suicide attempts, but ultimately succumbed just after the publication of her novel The Bell Jar, leaving two children aged 2 and nine months.

Happy Food Day, Gloucester!
Every Gloucester student from Kindergarten through 12th grade celebrated “real food, just food” this Friday, October 24 in a district-wide Food Day event. The event was coordinated by Backyard Growers, FoodCorps, Cape Ann Fresh Catch, and the amazing kitchen managers at each Gloucester school.
Food Day isn’t entirely new in Gloucester. Last year, FoodCorps service members serving with Backyard Growers and The Open Door organized a tasting of local butternut squash at Veterans Memorial Elementary School as part of this national event. This year, Backyard Growers has expanded its school garden programs to include every school in Gloucester, and decided to ramp up its Food Day programming as well.
