We saw this snowy owl on the “Snowy Owl Prowl” this afternoon at the Crane Wildlife Refuge in Ipswich  run by the Trustees. A wonderful hike in the dunes looking for these lovely creatures.

City government update

City issues warning on unsafe ice

Dear friends:
I have received the following communication from Larry Durkin, the city’s chief environmental engineer.
Despite recent cold temperatures the Gloucester Department of Public Works (DPW) is warning all to stay off Babson, Goose Cove, Dykes, Wallace, and Haskell reservoirs as water levels are fluctuating and any entry onto ice is unsafe.  The DPW is currently operating at the Babson Water Treatment Plant which takes water from Babson and Goose Cove reservoirs, so water levels are constantly changing and ice is shifting.  To refill Dykes Reservoir in West Gloucester the DPW is pumping from Wallace and Haskell Reservoirs, so the ice is not stable or safe for entry on these reservoirs as well.
With recent cold snaps, people can be lulled into thinking ice should be thick and safe to be on, but that is not the case were reservoir water levels are changing.
Please monitor your children’s activities, especially if you live close to these reservoirs. Your safety is important to us!

A personal note

I would just like to thank all of you who took the time to write and otherwise express support for my candidacy to be your interim mayor. In the event, the Council decided that it wanted a level playing field in November, and I respect that decision. Let us all join together to help our new mayor, Sefatia Romeo Theken, succeed as the interim leader of our city government.

The second episode of Cape Ann TV’s new original series On the Waterfront is here!

On the Waterfront is a water-to-table concept with each episode highlighting a different form of sea life. We fish it, process it, cook it, and eat it. All along the way we meet the people of Cape Ann making their living On the Waterfront.

On this episode we feature one of the most celebrated and economically important species on Cape Ann – the lobster!

Join our host Shephard Means as he pulls traps with Captain Tony Gross, offloads at Capt. Joe and Sons, and prepares a delicious lobster bake with VInwood Catering aboard the Beauport Princess at Cruiseport. All along the way we learn just how important the lobster is to this community as one of the few sustainable fishing industries left on Cape Ann.

Joey on the way to work from Ipswich this morning I saw this lying beside the road near Foote Bros Canoe and as I went by new it was the elusive Fisher Cat. I turned around to go back and grab a quick photo as did another driver who told me he lost six of his chickens over the weekend likely by the same animal.  Living in Ipswich I have heard them at night and have also caught a glimsp of one or two. Thought you would like. Have to work on the photography skills though.

(1892- 1982)

An Illinois native, MacLeish attended Hotchkiss, Yale, and Harvard Law,
where he was an editor of the Law Review, but only practiced for three years
before marrying and decamping to Paris to join the expatriate community of
the 1920’s, where his friends included Hemmingway, Stein, Dos Passos,
Fitzgerald, Parker and Benchley. During this time his poetry began to be
published and he was awarded the first of three Pulitzer prizes for his
writing. He was Franklin Roosevelt’s controversial choice to be Librarian of
Congress, and although he lacked formal training in Library Science, he is
credited with transforming the Library of Congress from an out of date
backwater to the literary archive of record is still is today. He was
instrumental in establishing the post of Poet Laureate, and was a founding
representative to UNESCO. He returned to Harvard in the late forties and
taught there until his retirement despite the opposition of Joseph McCarthy
and other Red Scare proponents. In addition to his multiple Pulitzers, his
writing garnered a National Book Award, a Tony for one of his plays, and an
Academy Award for a documentary. In 1977 Jimmy Carter recognized his
contributions to literature with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Lights of Love raised more than $14,500 to support Addison Gilbert Hospital’s cancer program and provide special care packages to new cancer patients.
Lights of Love was launched in 2008 by Gloucester residents Shawn Wilson and Sue Kyle as a tribute to Cape Ann families whose lives have been touched by cancer and as a symbol of their gratitude for the exceptional patient care Sue received at the Gorton’s Specialty and Cancer Care Center at Addison Gilbert Hospital. This year’s event was a tribute to Sue Kyle, and was presented in honor of long-time Addison Gilbert Hospital colleague Tina Ketchopulos. Over the past eight years, Lights of Love has raised more than $130,000. The O’Maley Middle School Vocal Performance club sang festive holiday carols during the event.

BAKE FOR GOOD: KIDS

In King Arthur Flour’s FREE Bake for Good: Kids Program, nearly 500 kids from Gloucester, Massachusetts will LEARN to make bread from scratch. They will discover that math, science, reading, and baking know-how add up to delicious bread! Kids are excited to take ingredients and their new skills home to BAKE two loaves; one to keep and enjoy and one to SHARE with The Open Door food pantry.
