MASSACHUSETTS FROM MAYOR ROMEO THEKEN

Gloucester and Essex County have been hit particularly hard since the snows began a couple of weeks ago. In the past 17 days, we have received a record setting 70 inches of snow. Not only has there been a lot of snow but it has been cold which has not allowed the snow to melt. The streets are lined with mountains of snow which makes getting around dangerous. We urge residents to exercise caution and take your time when travelling around the City.

The City has committed significant resources towards ensuring snow removal. We have deployed 25 pieces of City equipment and up to 75 pieces of contracted equipment as well as over 100 operators rotating through in shifts to clear snow. Our snow clearing efforts are ongoing and operating around the clock. We ask for your patience while we continue this endeavor.

I would like to say a quick word about the Gloucester DPW. These past few weeks have not been easy; the Director and his team have been working extremely hard. I would like to thank him and everyone at DPW for their incredible work and dedication to this City. Day-in and day-out they continue to do a tremendous job.

Working with Lt. Governor Polito, Senator Tarr and Representative Ferrante, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has agreed to provide the City with additional equipment to help clear snow. The City also has secured a waiver on a limited basis to dump snow in the ocean from Secretary of Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Mark Beaton. Those efforts will be coordinated through our Department of Public Works

If there is any doubt as to the historic nature of these storms, Governor Baker announced today that he has called in the National Guard to assist with snow removal. The City has forwarded an expansive list of needs to Governor’s office and continues to work with them to meet those needs.

In the coming days, we will continue to widen the City streets and dig out the school and municipal parking lots. We continue to maintain an aggressive snow removal plan while keeping the police and fire stations working and clear of snow.

On behalf of the City, I ask once again for your patience and understanding. Public safety is of the utmost importance. We are a strong community and together will get through this. Keep helping each other, checking on your neighbors and keep an eye on our seniors. Thank you.

Respectfully,

Leonard Campanello

Good Harbor Beach from Bass Rocks

Hi Joey,

I shot this from an altitude of 400’ from Bass Rocks on Saturday. Souther Road is the road visible in the foreground heading towards the beach and it’s marshes.  It started snowing just as the drone reached altitude.

Enjoy!

From now until noon on Tuesday, February 10th, all vehicles are banned from parking on city streets.

Violators of this emergency declaration are subject to ticketing and towing at the owners expense. Residents may park in municipal and school parking lots during the parking ban. This is a historic amount of snow. Please have patience as the Department of Public Works continues to work through areas that require snow removal. Please make every effort to shovel out hydrants at or near your homes.

The schools as well as the Public library will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 10th.

Please check on your elderly neighbors.

To repeat, the City of Gloucester has extended the parking ban on all city streets. The ban will be in effect until noon on Tuesday, February 10th.

Please check the City of Gloucester website for further updates at www.gloucester-ma.gov

Respectfully,

Leonard Campanello

Chief of Police

In addition to the current parking ban, The Gloucester Police Department is requesting ALL vehicles stay off the road at this time. We are responding to a large amount of spinouts and accidents as a result of the ongoing storm. It is unsafe to drive in these conditions and we are asking for your cooperation for the duration of this storm. Please stay off the roadways during this storm for your own safety and the safety of other motorists and pedestrians.

@MattNoyesNECN Poll- Shoveling Multiple Times vs The Screw It Til The End Method. Which Person Are You?

I’ve been keeping up with the storm (or at least trying to) by going out every couple of hours to shovel the walkway, around the cars and the end of the driveway.  When driving over my mom’s to shovel her out I noticed a good number of cars and driveways that were straight up covered and hadn’t been touched.

Reflecting on it right now I’m not sure which is the better method.

One makes for obviously lighter duty at the end but the screw it til the end method where you sit around and eat like a pig and watch marathon tv series on Netflix sounds pretty damn good.

Please let it end…

What has been your tactic for handling the last few storms.  If the options presented in the poll don’t represent your method, leave a comment.

Perfect Storm Feb 6- March 1 At The Cultural Center Rocky Neck

Opening Reception, Saturday, February 6, 4 to 6pm

PERFECTstormFebruary 6 – March 1, 2015

Cultural Center Gallery, 6 Wonson St. Gloucester
Reception: SAT Feb 7, 4-6pm
People’s Choice Award Reception: Sun Mar 1, 2-4pm

Juror, Leonie Bradbury, Director and Curator of Montserrat College of Art Galleries, selected 39 pieces from 22 artists out of 201 entries submitted. Bradbury said this about her selection process.

When I think of the concept of a “perfect storm” I think of a set of circumstances, or in this case the forces of nature, coming together in an unprecedented or unpredictable way. I feel that the works selected for this exhibition possess a quality of energies either colliding or expanding, sometimes raw and intense other times harmonious and peaceful. A few pieces, however, are subtler and show those quiet moments after a storm or visually capture a more delicate interaction of weather with a landscape through mist and fog. Together these works remind us of the power of nature and the beauty that we see in its magnificence.

The Eastern New England artists selected for the show include Emily Barrera,  Peter Baumgartner,  Dale Blank,  Kara Caso, Matt Cegelis,  Katherine Coakley,  Gail Gang,  Gordon Goetemann, Lisa Goren,  Ruth Hamill,  Law Hamilton,  Robert Hesse, Michele Kenna,  Mary Kostman,  Otto Laske,  Judith Monteferrante Skip Montello,  Sandys Moore,  Ruth Schneider,  Miranda Updike Timothy Wilson,  and Philip Young.

We invite you to see this exciting collection of work and meet the artists at our opening reception on Saturday, February 7 from 6-9pm. Vote for your favorite piece. A People’s Choice award will be presented at the closing reception on Sunday, March 1, 2-4pm.

Because of the snow, parking is limited in the main parking lot.
Extra parking is available at the Marine Railways at the end of Rocky Neck Ave., two blocks from the Cultural Center. Be sure to wear good boots.

God Bless The Hard Working Overtired Snow Plow Guys

Thanks for keeping the streets clear.  Every time shoveling in front of the driveway when the plow comes by I wince as it piles the snow back up in front of where I just shoveled.  Absolutely not their fault as they gotta get the streets cleared.  It just is what it is til the white stuff clears. Thanks plow guys for your hard work in this worst snow month ever.

Hi Joey, please see if you can get this in the blog — and you should really think about coming to this one, you’d have a great time. These are really fun events.  Thanks!

The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club has an absolute monster of a program for you on Friday night February 13.

Many of those wonderful pictures of objects in space — galaxies spinning, black holes feeding, stars being born and dying, planets moving around other stars, and so many others, are taken from space, not just by Hubble but by a whole fleet of space telescopes.

We actually have different space telescopes to observe different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum — light — from Gamma rays through our rainbow to the Infrared.

Why are the different space telescopes used and what do we learn from them? What do the different pictures look like? What is the future of space telescopes? We have the answers for you.

On Friday, February 13, North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club president and long-time GAACster Kevin Hocker will show us examples of different space telescopes that do different jobs, and, of course, we’ll see some of their amazing discoveries.

The space telescopes we will hear about include

  • Swift Gamma Ray Burst Telescope
  • Chandra X-Ray Observatory
  • Hubble Space Telescope
  • Kepler – the telescope in the hunt for Earth like planets
  • Spitzer Infrared observatory
  • And of course, the Future of space telescopes – James Webb Space Telescope

Kevin will show us an overview of each telescope, its features, and of course a striking and colorful assortment of photos from each. Don’t miss this one! You’ll be telling your friends all about this for weeks!

GAAC meets from 8:00 to 9:30 pm on the second Friday of the month at the Lanesville Community Center in the Lanesville neighborhood of Gloucester. There is no cost, and all are welcome. You don’t need to know anything about astronomy and you don’t need to own a telescope to have a great time! More information is available on our Facebook page at facebook.com/gaacpage, our website at http://gaac.us or our twitter feed, @gaactweet.

CAPE ANN YMCA TEEN LEADERS CLUB

18th ANNUAL ROCKATHON HELPS FEED THOSE IN NEED

Nearly four dozen dedicated, service-minded teens “rocked” for 24 sleepless hours to raise awareness and food donations for Open Door Food Pantry, St. Vincent De Paul Society and local families

image

Gloucester, MA – For the 18th year, the members of the Cape Ann YMCA Teen Leaders Club each rocked the night away (in rocking chairs, that is) for 24-sleepless hours to raise awareness and food donations for local families in need.  This year’s event continues to accept donations and to date has collected 24,699 cans and non-perishable items (financial donations were credited 3/$1) to be donated to the Open Door food pantry, St. Vincent De Paul Society and directly distributed to families and elders in need.  This event continues to grow each year impacting more and more community members who need assistance with one of life’s basic necessities–food.  In 2014, the Rockathon collected 15,100 canned goods and just one year later is on its way to nearly doubling that amount in donations.

“This event has grown significantly over the past several years and we are so incredibly proud of each one of our Y Teens for pushing through the tremendous discomfort in order to serve our community to provide, literally, thousands upon thousands of meals for folks and families in need.  By rocking for 24-sleepless hours, we get to truly get a sense of self sacrifice.” said Rick Doucette, Executive Director of Teen and Camp Services at the Cape Ann Y.  Doucette added, “We’re super-excited and grateful that the Gloucester City Council will formally recognize our Leaders Club and their commitment to helping our community at the March 10 Council Meeting at City Hall.”

The Cape Ann YMCA has a long history of being at the forefront of youth work with teens and strives to empower the next generation of leaders by giving them the tools to succeed.  Through community service opportunities, leadership clubs and drop-in Teen Centers where everyone is welcome, the Y is creating an inviting and inspiring atmosphere for young adults to thrive.

With the generosity of the Cape Ann community, the dedication of YMCA Staff and volunteers as well as the support from local businesses, this was the most successful Rockathon ever.  Rockathon space was provided by Mac Bell and food for the “Rockers” was provided by Carroll K Steele Insurance and Chick-Fil-A® at the North Shore Mall.
