Magnolia’s 38th Annual Art Show Friday, Saturday & Sunday, July 10, 11 & 12

Joey,
Any chance you may help Magnolia Library & Community Center spread the word about the 38th annual art.  Below is some information on the original Art Show.  Thank you Joey!
Friday, Saturday & Sunday, July 10, 11 & 12, Magnolia’s 38th annual Art Show will be held at the Magnolia Library & Community Center at 1 Lexington Ave in Gloucester. The show has been running for decades and is a very popular event in Magnolia. Historically there have been up to 200 pieces of beautiful framed art, photography and mixed media/sculptures and hundreds more smaller, unframed pieces at the show. All are also for sale. Most artists are from Cape Ann, and several have been a part of the show for decades. The show is judged by 3 local experienced artists. Cash Prizes are awarded in each category: acrylic, watercolor, mixed media & photography. There is also a people’s choice award, chosen by ballot by everyone who attends the show. All art show staff, as well as all Community Center board members, are volunteers so all proceeds directly benefit the citizens of Gloucester and the surrounding area. This is a great opportunity for family , friends & neighbors to get together and support both local artists and your local Community Center. Make a day or evening of it. Enjoy the show and have dinner in the area or walk the beach. Magnolia is a splendid setting for an Art Show.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Month at SeniorCare

It’s important to have a month and a day that focuses on bringing attention to the issue of Elder Abuse. June was World Elder Abuse Awareness Month and June 15, 2015 was World Elder Abuse Awareness day. But we must not forget that it is a daily issue.

Elder abuse refers to intentional or negligent acts by a caregiver or “trusted” individual that causes (or potentially causes) harm to a person 60 or older. Elder abuse can occur anywhere – in the home, in nursing homes, or other institutions. It affects seniors across all socioeconomic groups, cultures, and races.

If you suspect abuse or self-neglect, don’t assume that someone has already reported it. In cases of immediate danger call 911. Otherwise, you can call SeniorCare at 978-281-1750 during business hours or the elder abuse hotline at 800-922-2275, after hours..

This year SeniorCare held rally’s in three of its nine town area and hopes to expand it to more towns next year. Gloucester was held June 11, 2015 at the Fitz Hugh Lane Parking Lot on Rogers St., Rockport was held June 12, 2015 at the five corners, and Beverly held its rally on Saturday, June 13, 2015 in front of the Cabot Theater. All three had signage and scores of people in support of bringing light to the horrendous crime of elder abuse.

SeniorCare is Comitted to stopping Elder Abuse!

Next June SeniorCare will expand rallies into other towns, and we are planning a short parade in Gloucester.

Scott Trenti, Executive Director at Beverly Stop Elder Abuse Rally

Hi Joey,

My name is Shannon Cormier and I’m the new Career Pathways Coordinator for Action, Inc.’s  Compass program. We are trying to get the word out to local Cape Ann high school drop outs about our HiSET Preparation program (formerly GED) and I was told you would be a great person to reach out to! Would you be willing to share the attached flyer on Good Morning Gloucester?

Here at Compass, we offer free HiSET preparation for 16-24 year olds in the following communities: Gloucester, Essex, Ipswich, Rockport, Hamilton, Wenham, and Manchester-by-the-Sea. The program runs in eight-week cycles beginning at the end of September, with an additional seven-week summer program. Students are given the TABE to assess their reading and math levels and develop an education plan. Once all subjects are mastered, students are registered to take the HiSET exam. All program participants also receive computer skills training and college/career development.

Update: Day Two Grill Staging Table Preservation Project

    Day One Journal Here-

LAST MINUTE PARALYSIS- PLEASE ADVISE!- The (Help Maybe Get a Couple More Years Out Of The Cheap Table I Got At A Yard Sale) Table Project

After sanding and applying the first coat of Minimal Helmsman Spar Polyurethane I let it dry overnight and thus morning gave it a light sanding and wiped it down with a damp rag.  Easy.  Now for the second coat

    7:10AM

    image

    7:26AM
Second coat of Spar Polyurethane went on much quicker. Still have about a half a quart left. It was so quick and easy I’ll probably put on another coat around noon and be done with it. The second coat darkened it up nicely.
Very pleased with the results so far.
    image

    11:00AM
Another light sanding and wiping off with a damp rag and now to apply the final coat.
    image

    2:50PM
Ive already put 3 coats on and lightly sanded in between coats. Staring at a half a can of Spar Urethane and with each consecutive coat going on that much easier, I’ve decided to just keep adding layers. 4th Coat-

    Hey Joey

Definitely News worthy….. very few days with seas under 9 feet… and some over 30ft!!! You ever try to take a crap in that kind of weather! Holy Sh…!

A family of four with 2 (courageous) teenagers, 16 and 17, daughter and son, got out of class for the Summer of 2015, and in less than an hour later they were boarding their family sailboat on the way to Europe with 3 good friends… has just docked in the Azores. The trip well was a rough one but they made it safely! A Proud Capt and crew indeed!

    Please see their blog

For those who have not been following their daily progress and blog, I am happy to report that Tioga and crew have landed in the Azores

The below link gives their report on landing and can also be used to go back and read previous entries and comments.

A Good Day for Ducks, Fund Raising and Lots of Enthusiasm! Sunday’s weather brought torrential rain, but it didn’t keep participants from walking at the 25th Anniversary North Shore Medical Center’s Cancer Walk.  Over 2,000 people walked in the midst of the storm.

We have lost our small gray poodle.  His name is Little Guy, (LG)  His hair is cut to look like a mohawk.

We let him outside to go to our backyard and he took off.  He is not wearing a collar.

We are on Marshfield St. in West Gloucester.  If anyone finds him please contact us.  978-283-9759.

Thank you Joey for your help with this.  LG belongs to my mother who is visiting from PA.

The Friday July 10 GAAC meeting, 8:00 at the Lanesville Community Center, will feature astrophotographer extraordinaire Phil Orbanes with “Springtime for Galaxies,” an expansive, colorful look at the island universes all around us, unspeakably large and far away but connected directly and materially to us by the light they radiate.

Galaxies, in their number and distance from us, test the limits of our understanding, but there they are nonetheless.
Phil’s presentation features a spectacular, lavishly illustrated look at 36 galaxies, alone, and in pairs and groups, culled from the areas between the Big Dipper and Virgo. Each galaxy, like our own, shines with the light of hundreds of billions of stars.
Phil will also be giving away, to one lucky person, a new copy of James Geach’s wonderful book “Galaxy,” and there will be a consolation drawing as well. We’re not going to tell you the prize; you’ll have to come in and take your chances. There’s big fun here folks, goodies to eat, great conversation, and an enlightening presentation on a stunning subject.
GAAC meets on the second Friday of the month at 8:00 pm at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street in the Lanesville neighborhood of Gloucester. GAAC is always free, no dues, fees or costs. Plenty of free parking.

More information on the club is available at http://gaac.us, on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/GAACpage, and on twitter, @GAACster.
