CBD Reduces Blood Pressure!

 BY ANGEL WINGS WELLNESS

A single dose of CBD reduces blood pressure in healthy volunteers in a randomized crossover study. A study by “The Journal of Clinical Insight”

BACKGROUND. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a nonpsychoactive phytocannabinoid used in multiple sclerosis and intractable epilepsies. Preclinical studies show CBD has numerous cardiovascular benefits, including a reduced blood pressure (BP) response to stress. The aim of this study was to investigate if CBD reduces BP in humans.

METHODS. Nine healthy male volunteers were given 600 mg of CBD or placebo in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study. Cardiovascular parameters were monitored using a finometer and laser Doppler.

RESULTS. CBD reduced resting systolic BP (–6 mmHg; P < 0.05) and stroke volume (–8 ml; P < 0.05), with increased heart rate (HR) and maintained cardiac output. Subjects who had taken CBD had lower BP (–5 mmHg; P < 0.05, especially before and after stress), increased HR (+10 bpm; P < 0.01), decreased stroke volume (–13 ml; P < 0.01), and a blunted forearm skin blood flow response to isometric exercise. In response to cold stress, subjects who had taken CBD had blunted BP (–6 mmHg; P < 0.01) and increased HR (+7 bpm; P < 0.05), with lower total peripheral resistance.

CONCLUSIONS. This data shows that acute administration of CBD reduces resting BP and the BP increase to stress in humans, associated with increased HR. These hemodynamic changes should be considered for people taking CBD. Further research is required to establish whether CBD has a role in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders.

Gloucester Rotary to Honor Leo Bergeron

 ~ TRIXY546

Leo Bergeron

Leo Bergeron will be presented with the Gloucester Rotary’s Paul Harris Distinguished Service Award at a special dinner on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Cruiseport Gloucester, located at 6 Rowe Square in downtown Gloucester. The Paul Harris Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Gloucester Rotary and recognizes Leo as a long-time local banker and community activist.

Leo was selected by a Rotary committee of previous Paul Harris recipients. Over its 100+ year history, the Gloucester Rotary has honored more than sixty individuals with the award. The award is named after Paul Harris, a Chicago attorney who founded the Rotary movement in the early 1900s.

After graduating from Nichols College in 1976, Leo began a career in the banking industry working at lending institutions in the New Hampshire seacoast region and on Boston’s North Shore. In 2000, he joined Cape Ann Savings Bank in Gloucester where he successfully established a commercial lending department to serve Cape Ann businesses.

After previously serving other Rotary Clubs and a presidential position with the Kiwanis Club in NH, Leo was welcomed by the Rotary Club of Gloucester as a member 25 years ago, where he has held several leadership positions, including the club’s 2020-2021 presidency.

Leo has a daughter, Brianna; a grandson, Graham; and has been married to his wife Jacqueline for almost 20 years. His hobbies include freshwater fly fishing and riding his motorcycle.

Tickets for the Paul Harris Distinguished Service Dinner are $60 per person and may be reserved by contacting committee Chair Steve Kaity at 978-407-1504 or skaity@strongleather.com. The dinner is open to the general public and friends and colleagues of Leo are encouraged to attend.

Cape Ann Animal Aid Pet Of The Week- Louie

Meet Louie! This 7 year old guy is as cute as can be and is certainly ready to finally find his forever home! This is especially true considering that this guy has been previously owned by multiple people, all who could not keep him due to life circumstances. Possibly because he’s never had a consistent home where he can feel safe and comfortable, Louie has some behavioral quirks that are important to know about for any potential adopters. Louie can be nervous around unfamiliar people, and has been known to bark or growl, especially toward unfamiliar men. He’s also not a fan of anything that moves toward him too quickly, and that includes joggers, as well anyone who reaches their hands toward him too quickly. It is because of behavioral quirks like these that Louie is considered a special needs adoption. He’s the type of guy who will thrive with someone who is willing to go slow and be gentle when getting to know him. He also needs to go to a home without children; anyone over 18 is fine.

All that considering, Louie is a super fun guy, and it’s hard to keep your heart from melting when he snuggles into your lap, or does one of his entertaining tricks! You’ll sometimes see Louie walking on two feet, with his two little front legs bobbing up and down in the air! He brightens everyone’s day here with his upbeat, silly personality, and we’re sure he would do the same for you!

Louie is currently able to meet by appointment only, so if you’re interested in him, please submit an application at capeannanimalaid.org/dogapp
