Saturday Evening Girls Talk at the Cape Ann Museum
May 17, 2016 ~ Cape Ann Museum
Progress and Opportunity in the Early 1900s
Saturday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m.
An illustrated lecture presented by Dr. Dorothy E. King
The Saturday Evening Girls (S.E.G.) was a progressive social club organized in Boston in 1899 to assimilate young immigrant women into American culture. The “girls” who took part in the group met on Saturday evenings and were introduced to literature, art and history. They were also given the opportunity to develop craft and business skills at the Paul Revere Pottery in North Boston. The bowl shown here is one such example of the skilled craftsmanship that came out of this social experiment. S.E.G. pottery is now very valuable and highly sought after. The S.E.G. is connected to Cape Ann through a summer camp that was built for the girls’ use at Wingaersheek Beach in West Gloucester in 1906.
Dr. King, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Penn State Harrisburg will be joined by Joanne Riley, archivist at UMASS Boston and Roz Kramer, daughter of pioneer Saturday Evening Girls (SEG) researcher Barbara Kramer for the lecture.
This program is $10 for CAM members / $20 for non-members (includes Museum admission). Space is limited; reservations required. For more information, please email info@capeannmuseum.org. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Museum at 978-283-0455 x10 or online at Eventbrite.

ATTENTION ALL INTERNATIONAL DORY RACING FUNDRAISER
Attention All!
The Gloucester International Dory Racing Committee will be hosting a fundraiser at the St. Peter’s Club Friday, May 20th at 6 pm. All are welcome to attend for a fun night of games, drinks, apps, music, dancing, and lots of cool items for raffles! Proceeds from the event will go towards the expansion of our program and offerings to the community which will allow our members to continue promoting maritime heritage, friendly competition, and fun. Not many people in our community are familiar with the history of Dory’s and how much importance they hold in the start of our fishing industry. Our goal is to educate people more about this cause and possibly even recruit new members to try a sport that represents the meaning of their hometown. So come join us for a fun night and help keep this tradition going strong! Tickets will be sold prior to the event for $10 or can be purchased at the door. For any questions about the fundraiser, to purchase tickets, or if you’d like to make donations for raffles please contact the following members. Hope to see a lot of you there!

Happy Birthday Madeline and The Soccer Chicks At Gillette Stadium #NERevsGame
Cindy Hendrickson is the proud new owner of Cape Ann Foodie Tours!
Hi Joey,
I wanted you to know that – besides being an 8 state in one-day swimmer – I am also the proud new owner of Cape Ann Foodie Tours! The business was created in 2012 by PJ Halloran and I am pleased to take over the reins – or Foodie Fork in this case!
What is a food tour people may wonder? It is a different way of seeing a city. Ours is a food focused walking tour (we travel about a mile) and folks walk away with local knowledge and a full belly.
The tour begins at Harbor Loop where our guide gives a history of Cape Ann. We walk up Rogers Street towards Main and visit the Topside Grill. Next it’s the Cape Ann Olive Oil Company, then onto Virgilios!
We cross the street for a treat at Café Sicilia before heading down to St Peter’s Square where – of course – we visit the Cape Ann Brew Pub. Last stop is Turtle Alley!
I don’t want to tell you everything because I’d spoil the tour! We do also run a tour in Rockport called Sights and Sweets as well as a Taste Newburyport tour.
Joey, we also have an Ales and Tales tour. This is really fun and it basically entails having a fisherman talk and drink beers with a group of people who are in town looking for local color. Do you know anyone who would be great at “guiding” this tour?
Please spread the word! We also have a 5* TripAdvisor rating on “Things to Do” on Cape Ann.
Thanks!
Cindy

A Case of the Measles Reported in Rockport
More Cape Ann Wellness News – http://www.capeannwellness.com
Did you know? A case of the measles was reported in Rockport – According to the Public Health Department, a visitor in Rockport turned out to have a case of the measles. They were said to have visited various places in Boston and Cambridge May 1st and on May 3rd, they visited The Pewter Shop and Sea Star Gift Shop, and Brothers’ Brew Coffee Shop. The Boston Globe reported, “On May 4, the tourist was back in Boston, at the Star Market in Copley Square and shopping along Newbury Street. By May 5 through Sunday, the visitor was at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health officials said patients and visitors at the hospital who may have been exposed will be notified by hospital administrators. Nespresso’s cafe on Newbury Street was closed yesterday by the public health department, scheduled to reopen today.”

Introducing Seniors Out & About – An LGBT Social Gathering
SeniorCare Inc. and North Shore Pride are pleased to announce the creation of a new program to provide social opportunities for Seniors in the LGBT community. “Seniors Out & About – An LGBT Social Gathering” will organize events for older LGBT people (60 years of age and older), their friends and family. The first event will take place on June 19, 2016 as a kick-off to North Shore Pride Week at the North Shore Music Theatre! Following Pride Week, there will be a Pot Luck Dinner in Rockport on June 26—watch for more information on the Pot Luck.
Seniors Out & About will attend the June 19, 2:00 p.m., show of FUNNY GIRL at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly. There will be a private reception following the show right outside the theater on the patio with snacks and refreshments. A limited number of discounted tickets (inner circle seats) are available for this event.
FUNNY GIRL tells the bittersweet story of Fanny Brice (played by Broadway veteran Shoshana Bean), whose vocal talents and comedic ability see her rise from Brooklyn music hall singer to the Ziegfeld Follies, then on to international fame, and her tempestuous relationship with gambler Nicky Arnstein.
For information and tickets to the June 19 show, go to www.seniorcareinc.org and click on the “Out & About” link or contact Kelly Knox at 978-281-1750 for additional information.
