Fall Walking Tours at the Cape Ann Museum

Guided walking tours begin at the Cape Ann Museum at 10:00a.m. and are held rain or shine, lasting about 1½ hours; participants should be comfortable being on their feet for that amount of time. $10 members; $20 nonmembers (includes Museum admission). Hopper’s Houses Walking Tour

Saturday, September 10

Take a leisurely walk past select Gloucester houses made famous by painter Edward Hopper. Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions during the summer months in the years 1912, 1923, 1924, 1926 and 1928. He began working in watercolor, capturing the local landscape and architecture in loosely rendered, light filled paintings. This special walking tour will explore the neighborhood surrounding the Museum, which includes many of the Gloucester houses immortalized by Hopper’s paintings.

Then, this tour will give you a three-dimensional introduction to this little city by the sea. From sculptures commemorating those who went to sea, to those who fought in war to those who changed the artistic landscape of Cape Ann forever—this walking tour will uncover the stories behind the public sculptures of Gloucester, including the unique processes of the artists who created them.

Fitz Henry Lane on Foot and Online

Saturday, October 1

Experience 19th century Gloucester history as this tour leads you through the neighborhoods and waterfront that inspired the artwork of native son Fitz Henry Lane. Learn how Lane rose from modest beginnings in the pre-civil war era to worldwide recognition as a marine painter and why, even today, numerous artists journey to Cape Ann to capture its unusual light, first immortalized by Lane.

Participants are encouraged to bring smart phones or tablets in order to use the rich sources of information in the newly released Fitz Henry Lane Online catalog raisonne. During this walk, you will connect specific locations to the paintings they inspired by accessing the online catalog. Alternative visuals will also be available.

Trash/Recycling Update: 8/26/16 4:00 PM

We would like to thank the residents for their patience and understanding during this past week. All trash routes for the week are complete.

Currently we are running 2 days behind in the recycling routes. Wednesday’s recycling in the down town area,(Maplewood Ave and surrounding side streets) is complete. They are currently working in the Wheeler’s Point Area. We hope to complete the Wheeler’s Point section. In the event that it is not completed, this will be the first area that gets picked up tomorrow morning. They will then continue with Thursday and Friday’s recycling routes.

City Offices are currently closed. If you would like to report a missed trash or recycling stop, please use our See Click Fix feature and city staff will be notified.

Again, we would like to thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter and will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

Printmaking at the Cape Ann Museum

A four-part Folly Cove Designer-inspired printmaking workshop at the Cape Ann Museum

Every Thursday,   October 27, 2016 — November 17, 2016

10:00 a.m. — 12:30 p.m.

Enjoy four days of close instruction from artists Mary Rhinelander and Victoria Petway as they delve into the world of block printing. A shared affinity for the Folly Cove Designers brought Mary and Victoria together and they will guide the workshop using Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios’ three rules: Do it! Don’t copy! Don’t give up!

This customized course offers adult participants a special opportunity to create his/her own artwork surrounded by the inspirational work of the Folly Cove Designers. Participants will sketch, carve linoleum blocks and print an original work to take home.  They will leave this course with a greater understanding of the history and work of the Folly Cove Designers, with a new creative outlet and with twenty original greeting cards just in time for the holiday season. All levels of experience are welcome and materials will be provided (participants will be required to bring enthusiasm and some elbow grease!).

The workshop will meet on Thursdays, October 27 through November 17.

Cape Ann Museum Book Club

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present a monthly book club for year-round residents of Cape Ann. Beginning this October and running through April, the Museum will host book club meetings on the third Tuesday of the month in its auditorium from 11:00a.m. to 12:30p.m.

Space is limited to 15; reservations are required and will be for the entirety of the October to April program length. Due to the afternoon meeting time participants are invited to bring their boxed lunches. Free for Museum members or included with general admission. Not a member? August 25, 2016 – Thursday Concert At Harbor Loop 6:00 p.m. On Stage will be “What Time is Mr. Fox”. Traffic will be heavier than normal at Rogers Street and Harbor Loop from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

August 27, 2016 and August 28, 2016 Public Beaches – Both Saturday and Sunday weather conditions are predicted to be conducive for popular Beach attendance.  Expectations are for heavy traffic on Eastern Avenue and Thatcher Road, as well as Concord and Atlantic Streets from 9:00 a.m. until noon.  Police will be on duty at Good Harbor Beach.  Wingaersheek Beach and Stage Fort Park.  We will also have area cruisers monitoring traffic at the Eastern Avenue Lights and Concord and Atlantic Streets when available.

August 27, 2016 – Saturday – The Annual Magnolia Road Race – The race will take place beginning at 7:30 a.m. Expectations are for traffic delays and for brief road closures on Lexington Avenue, Norman Avenue, Magnolia Avenue and Shore Road until approximately 10:00 a.m.

August 27, 2016 – Saturday – The Fishermen’s Memorial Service – The service will begin at 5:00 p.m. proceeding from Legion Square to Stacy Boulevard.  Expectations are for minor traffic delays.  The public is encouraged to join us in commemoration to honor our Fishermen.

We will continue our increased Police Patrol of the quarries, Long Wharf and after hours at Wingaersheek Beach.

Announcement: City Declares Water Use Restrictions

In conjunction with our DPW and Water Compliance Office, the Mayor just approved water restriction measures which will be announced as effectively enforced immediately.

The full release is attached within this email and we wanted you all to be aware before we distributed widely throughout the community. Please note that this is not a full water ban, instead, water restricted to use after 5PM and before 9AM.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask, but the main bullets are:

• Outdoor watering is limited to “handheld” with a hose or a watering can after 5 p.m. or before 9 a.m.;
• Outdoor watering with irrigation systems and sprinklers is prohibited;
• Watering of municipal parks and recreation fields with irrigation systems and sprinklers will be limited and be before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
• In Gloucester watering is only at essential locations and at areas where vegetation is being reestablished for erosion control such as at the Little River Restoration Project;
• Filling swimming pools, washing cars and washing buildings is prohibited.

Music on Meetinghouse Green to Benefit the Grace Center

Deb Hardy and Alternate Roots Band in Free Concert, Friday, August 26, 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Deb Hardy is a contemporary folk singer/songwriter from Gloucester whose songs reflect the drama, beauty and serenity of this ocean harbor community. Her style of singing and guitar playing is rhythmic, expressive and powerful. You may hear such influences as Kate Bush, Yes, and Led Zeppelin. Deb performs her songs in a warm, relaxed, and energetic spirit.
Alternate Roots is a roots rock party band made up of Tom Alley, Jamie Melville and Carl Di Franza. Together with Deb Hardy, they cover tunes from the Etta James, Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Blind Melon, Alabama Shakes and more.

This is concert eight in a series of nine free outdoor concerts presented by the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation.   The family-friendly concert begins at 6 pm. Bring a picnic, folding chairs or blankets. In case of rain, the event will take place inside the Meetinghouse (no food or drink permitted inside.) Donations will be accepted to benefit the Grace Center.

About the Grace Center
In the winter of 2009, the Cape Ann Clergy Association recognized an increasing number of requests for help from low-income and homeless adults. A Needs Assessment Study identified a number of pressing needs including the absence of a safe day space for the homeless in Gloucester. On December 22, 2011, the Grace Center, Inc. opened as a day resource center with professional staff and volunteers. To date we have served over 700 individuals.  http://gracecenterinc.org/

I purchsed this for my husband for Father’s Day in addition to a Yeti. I thought this would be fun to compare, and its always more fun to drink with a friend! The coozie looks exactly like the Yeti. My husband dis notice that it felt different when screwing the lid on, but this did not affect the chilling capacity. This was able to keep the drink as cold as the Yeti did in 90 degree weather out on the lake. My husbands only complaint was that it kept the beer so cold that you felt like it was your first sip instead of the last which made him deink faster if he wasn’t paying attention!
