FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
‘The Eleventh Year’ with the Psychedelic Cinema Orchestra, Saturday, Nov. 21, at 7:30pm in the Gloucester Meetinghouse, to benefit Ukrainian humanitarian aid
Psychedelic Cinema Orchestra (PCO) will accompany The Eleventh Year, a movie by Dziga Vertov, in the historic 1806 Meetinghouse on Saturday, November 21, at 7:30pm. The showing of this 1927 film with a new musical score is a benefit event for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
This dynamic film is considered a masterpiece of Ukrainian cinema which has renewed relevance today as the country fights valiantly to preserve its land and freedom against the aggression of Putin’s Russia. Dziga Vertov (best known as director of Man with a Movie Camera 1929) was born and raised in Ukraine. He retained an allegiance to this Soviet republic throughout his life and did extensive filming there – releasing several films on the subject.
The Eleventh Year was released in 1927 and was his last film before Man with a Movie Camera. The film traces Ukraine’s progress 10 years after the Russian Revolution. It celebrates the working people of Ukraine, their labor, new technology, the exploitation of natural resources, their strong military and the people’s enduring relationship with the land.
The Psychedelic Cinema Orchestra is a four-man ensemble which composes contemporary scores for silent films. The PCO began in 2013 with a score for Ken Brown’s 1969 film Psychedelic Cinema (hence the orchestra’s name) and has since scored and performed with movies such as South – Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition, Hitchcock’s The Lodger, and several short films. The group has toured extensively in the United States. The members of the Psychedelic Cinema Orchestra are:
Ken Winokur – PCO director, percussion, clarinet
Jonathan LaMaster – violin, guitar, bass, electronics
Russ Gershon – keyboard
- Andrew Willis – guitar viol, electronics
