Cape Ann Guitar Society and Night Owls

December 20th, 2024, 7:30 – 9:30 pm
Upstairs on Main, Shalin Liu Performance Center

Join the Cape Ann Guitar Society on Friday, December 20th, at 7:30 pm, for Shalin Liu’s Upstairs on Main series featuring an evening of guitar, with music from the Renaissance, Sephardia, and right here on Cape Ann. The Guitar Society’s founder Brendan Evans will present a classical guitar program of music from 16th century Spain and Italy, and will be joined by violinist Scott Moore for a set of Sefardic Airs arranged for guitar and violin. The acoustic trio Night Owls will then take the stage for a set of original music, blending three-part harmonies with classical guitar, playing songs about love, change, and mystery.

Winners of the 2020 New England Songwriting Competition for their song, “Your Town (is Gonna Change),” Chris + Joe (Chris Langathianos and Joe Wilkins) are a Cape Ann-based duo with deep roots in the Greater Boston music scene, are known for their tight harmonies, thoughtful songs, and engaging banter. Joe, a multi-instrumentalist, expert songwriter, and producer, teamed up with vocalist and live show producer, Langathianos, in 2013 and they have continued to capture audiences with their easy and melodic, yet diverse, style, witty banter and approachable sets.

From easy melodic folk to contemporary pop and rock, Chris + Joe bring a new twist to old favorites, mixed with deeply personal, award-winning originals, and a side of self-deprecating audience give-and-take.

Renee & Joe is a folk/rock duo whose music features both high energy vocal and instrumental arrangements as well as minimalist themes and gentle harmonies. They’ve released three full length albums since 2014 and can be seen playing around Cape Ann and greater New England as a duo and as a part of other musical ensembles. Renee (piano/vocals) & Joe (bass/guitar/vocals) also play in the neo-soul, cabaret band What Time Is It Mr. Fox?. They live on Cape Ann with their two children.

Martime Gloucester Is Lit!

It was a foggy and wet late afternoon when I stopped by Maritime Gloucester to check things out. I was intrigued by the holiday lights. It’s always so hopeful and cheery; even more so with the upcoming Lobster Trap Tree Lighting Sat Dec 14. Hope to see you there.

Gloucester Biotechnology Academy Accepting Applications!

 ~ GLOUCESTER MARINE GENOMICS INSTITUTE

The second cohort of the Class of 2025 begins January 6th, with spaces still available. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

This innovative, hands-on training program prepares young adults for professional careers as life sciences laboratory technicians. Students spend six months of hands-on learning in a state-of-the-art teaching facility in Gloucester’s Blackburn Center, followed by three-month paid internships at a North Shore or Greater Boston biotech company.

The program is open to students ages 18-30 with a high school diploma or the equivalent. No math or science experience is needed to apply.

Once again, tuition and fees will be waived — in their entirety — for the Academy’s class of 2025. In addition, qualifying students can receive a stipend of $1,000 per month to help support their living expenses while training. GMGI is committed to providing STEM education opportunities to all, regardless of financial background.

Please visit the Apply page on the GMGI website for more information on the program, and to submit your application. Space is limited so don’t miss this amazing opportunity!
