I literally haven’t heard one person say anything positive about Question 5. Every restaurant server, owner or manager have all emphatically pleaded to educate people to vote NO on 5

Vote no on Question 5 Rally

Hey Joey-

Thank you for taking the time to hear me. I am writing to inform you that members of Cape Ann will be holding a rally at the rotary in Gloucester on Monday, November 4, 2024 with the intent of spreading an emphatic opposition to Question 5 on the state ballot for this upcoming election. I have spoken to restaurant owners, managers, and employees alike and expect a strong turnout amid the presidential supporters. The time of this gathering will be from 3-6 PM, and there is a public FaceBook group, Cape Ann Says NO To Question 5, organized to promote both this event and distribute awareness geared toward this cause.

Support from local news would be an integral part to speeding the spread of our ardent cry to stop Question 5 from passing.

Question 5 is a doomsday package wrapped with a pretty bow to the service industry of Massachusetts. An outside Californian company has pushed this onto our ballots and will lead to crippling labor costs, higher prices, forced unionization and decreased quality of life for thousands of Massachusetts residents. Vote NO ON QUESTION 5!

Author Talk with Alice Markham-Cantor: The Once & Future Witch Hunt

 ~ Sawyer Free Library ~

Join author Alice Markham-Cantor at the Sawyer Free Library on Tuesday, October 29 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm as she discusses her book, The Once & Future Witch Hunt, which investigates the Salem witch trials and their lasting impact.

Past and present collide in this page-turner investigation of Salem’s irrepressible question: How could this have happened?

In 1692, Martha Allen Carrier was hanged as the “Queen of Hell.” Three hundred years later, her nine-times-great-granddaughter, Alice Markham-Cantor, set out to discover why Martha died. As she chased her ancestor through the archives, graveyards, and haunted places of New England, grappling with what we owe the past, Alice’s connection to Martha led her to a shocking truth: witch hunts didn’t end in Salem.

Extensively researched and and compulsively readable, told through alternating fiction and non-fiction chapters, The Once & Future Witch Hunt does not treat Salem as a cautionary tale. It treats Salem as an instruction manual—not on how to perform witch hunts, but how to stop them.

The author talk is taking place at Sawyer Free Library at 21 Main Street. Registration is not required. All welcome. Questions? Contact: lsvensson@sawyerfreelibrary.org.

October Beach days! Surfside Subs Closing for the Season at the end of the week.

October 28, 2024. Surfside Subs is closing for the season— later this year because the weather has been warm, and they are slammed. On some summer days, they have record lobster roll sales. Can you guess how many?

Customers lined up one fall day for mudiga steak subs, turkey subs, tuna salad, pizzas, and yes, lobster rolls, which are on special this week. Also pizza. Buy any pizza and get a second one for $5, scrumptious fresh and hot. Too much? When you’re cold and missing a Long Beach Surfside slice, you’ll be happy you bought an extra to wrap and freeze for later.

Saturn

I was up in Portsmouth with friends Saturday night and a gentleman had an enormous telescope set up on the street and was offering the chance to take a peek at Saturn. While it was visible with the naked eye it was obviously tiny, but it was crystal clear through his telescope and I was so sad that we stopped to take a look. Saturn is 870,000,000 miles away….. which for even a non-astronomy nut like myself is pretty mind-boggling.

Back Lit Great Blue

This Great Blue Heron was actively hunting in the bright fall sunshine when I stopped to watch. They are fascinating. Though it’s backlit, I think the photos came out well enough to share. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to watch one of these beauties.

Video- Good Morning Gloucester French Onion Soup Tour – 525

With Summer slamming to a close and it being cold and raw out we’re gonna do a roundup of the best French Onion Soup around town, probably including all of Cape Ann.

Criteria which I think we can all agree on- served in a proper French Onion soup crock, the cheese be the right mix and crusted over the top, the broth be hearty and most importantly, flavor.

Here’s 525. Please nominate local place where you think they have great French Onion soup for us to try. Let me know where you think we should go next.
