Sawyer Free hosting Film Screening of Madan Sara: The Power of Women in Haiti

 ~ SAWYER FREE LIBRARY

In honor of Women’s History Month, this Thursday, March 14 at 5:30 pm the Sawyer Free Library will present a film screening of Madan Sara, a film by Etant Dupain, followed by a virtual conversation with Dupain.

The film is in Haitian Creole with English subtitles. The women known as Madan Sara are battling for a more robust and inclusive economy in Haiti. This film tells the story of these women who work at the margins to make Haiti’s economy run. Despite facing hardship and social stigma, their work puts their children through school, houses their families, and helps ensure a better life. This film amplifies the Madan Sara as they share their dreams for a more just Haiti.

Registration is requested but not required. For more information, visit sawyerfreelibrary.org or 978-325-5500.

Mad skills: Turner’s Seafood Fish Facts videos | filleting local haddock from #gloucesterma

Turners Seafood operates in several communities. Its Gloucester branch, Turner’s Seafood Market & Fish n Chips is located near St. Ann’s on Smith Street between Maplewood Ave. and Pleasant St., on the same side of the street as Holy Cow ice cream. On Turner’s Seafood main website, you can find descriptions for the daily fresh catch options. And from the “more” option you can select LEARN MORE: FISH FACTS to see a few local video shorts including, Real Local Haddock from the Dock to Your Plate. You’ll see master filleter, Milton, who has honed his decades of artful expertise at Turner’s, inspecting and fish cutting; and then on to Joey for another round of skinning and inspecting the fillets.

**Thanks to Heidi Dallin for recommending their local video production: Turner’s Seafood gets 2 Heidi Dallin thumbs up for their short reel Fun Facts 🙂

Turner’s Seafood shared the short videos on social media, too.

Let’s Try Some Irish Coffee

It’s March so it’s time for me to try the various Irish coffee options in the area. I am a little late in catching up with this effort so this post will cover three options. I am open to suggestions so share your favorites!

First, a surprise option at the AmVets is their Irish coffee which is quite good! I like the serving mug which make me feel like I am having my morning coffee. The atmosphere is also a winner.

The second option is from the Anchor Bar in Danvers. You can’t really lose with a cherry on top though drinking from a pub glass isn’t my favorite option. It was delicious and well priced though.

Welcome back to the Gloucester House and the friendly staff! Here’s their version of an Irish Coffee. It’s very satisfying and I’ll have another one day very soon.

I’ve been told using “real” whipped cream is a no brainer but I understand why most establishments cannot do that. Whenever I am asked if I want the whipped cream, I say YES regardless. Where else should I go? Rhumb Line is coming up next in the rotation.

Young Gray seal resting on Magnolia Beach

This little guy came onto to Magnolia Beach to rest on Saturday.  Rebecca who is the from the Shellfish Constable Office, with a background in sea mammals, came to do a well check on this young seal.  Rebecca was very efficient and knowledgeable with regards to making sure this young gray seal was safe.   She explained to beach walkers to stay at least 150 feet away from the seal, especially dogs off leash.  The seal can get very stressed with dogs and people getting too close.  Faith from the animal control stayed with the seal to make sure the seal was safe.  Both of these city employees showed compassion for the seal and explaining to people why to stay away.    The seal can get very stressed with dogs and people getting too close.
