WINES

Domaine Seguinot 2021 Chardonnay, Chablis, France, Varietal: Chardonnay Alc., 12.5%

Daniel Seguinot settled in Chablis in 1971, and with help from his father and grandfather, he purchased a modest 2 hectares of vineyards.  Since then Daniel has a total of 20 hectares exclusively in the Chablis AOC. Today his two children Emilie, who took over in 2003, and Laurence who joined in 2008 manage the estate. The domain is located in Maligny, 8 km north of Chablis, on the North-South main road of the Serein valley. The Seguinot Chardonnay has an elegant bouquet that develops citrus, white fruit and floral aromas with exposure in the glass. Fresh and supple, the wine is marked by mineral notes that are typical of the appellation. Pairs well with oysters, seafood, grilled fish, or a variety of lighter fare. $25.99

Monget Giennois, Loire Valley, France

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Alc. 12.5%

Following the completion of his academic studies in agricultural engineering, Christophe Monget began his career in the Bordeaux wine sector before proceeding to Champagne, ultimately landing in Centre-Loire as technical manager of quality Sauvignon seedlings. He was inspired to delve into winemaking and has been an integral member of the team behind the venerable Domaine de Villargeau (Coteaux du Giennois) as well as producing his own wine under the Christophe Monget Vigneron label. For this, his own label, Christophe and his cousin manage 23 hectares of family vineyards about 50 km north of Pouilly FumĂ© that were once planted with grains and grazed by cattle. With a passion for wine and polycultural farming, Christophe dedicated the entire property and historic 300-year-old stone barns to grape growing and winemaking. His farming philosophy is a commitment to organic and natural practices, and the domain is a member of Terra Vitis. On the palate, this wine’s vibrant citrus flavors take the spotlight, maintaining a harmonious and refined character that extends to the long, mineral-driven finish. Pairs well with pan-roasted salmon or a refreshing appetizer of fresh cantaloupe wrapped in prosciutto. $21.99

Maison Guillot-Broux 2021 Pinot Noir, Burgundy, France

Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc. 13.5%

Established in the early 1950s by Pierre and Jeannine Guillot, the husband-and-wife team worked land that had lain fallow and been abandoned for 100 years due to the phylloxera outbreak of the mid-1800s which swept the region. Owing to this benign neglect, the Guillots were able to own and farm sites that had never been treated with industrial chemicals. Pierre and Jeannine’s son Jean-Gerard took over the family operation in 1978 with his wife, Jacqueline Broux, creating the domaine Guillot-Broux. Today, the 17 hectare estate is run by the third generation brothers Emmanuel and Patrice. Emmanuel is the head winemaker, a position he returned to in 2000 after a distinguished career as a Sommelier in the UK at the Michelin starred L’Ortolan in Reading, Berkshire, and Patrice manages the domain’s vineyards. In recent years, weather conditions have often led to lower yields than planned, causing an economic burden for the domain. In order to find a solution to this situation, the domain set up the nĂ©gociant house, Maison Guillot-Broux in 2014. For the wines under the Maison label, all the partner winegrowers are either certified organic or converting to organic agriculture. To guarantee the quality of Maison-labeled wines, the domain selects each individual vineyard they harvest. In addition, Guillot-Broux harvests the grapes themselves and vinifies at their domain, using the same methods as for their domain wines, i.e. no added yeast and minimal use of sulfites. This Maison Guillot-Broux Pinot Noir is a gorgeous expression of French terroir. It is juicy and opulent with notes of cherries and blueberries on the nose and palate. Pairs well with salmon, roast chicken, goat gouda. $19.99

Illahe Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon

Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc. 14% 

Home of some of the most elegant and expressive Pinot Noir in the world, the Willamette Valley is a mixed landscape of green, rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. At Illahe, in addition to using draft horses to plow and to transport the grapes, they use solar power and the winery buildings are gravity-flow, featuring three levels, and using the natural slope of the site, starting from the crush pad to the fermenters and the press below. A further drop-off from the fermentation room to the press level means the press baskets can be loaded by hand. The care that is taken with the land and the grapes shows in the wine. The Pinot Noir has aromas of ripe plum, nutmeg, cigar box, and vanilla bean. The fruit on the palate — cherry torte, tamarind paste, strawberry jam, anise – along with nutmeg and cinnamon spice, help develop a balanced and weighted mouth feel with good acidity and smooth, lingering tannins. Pairs well with grilled salmon, coq au vin, mushroom pasta. $31.99

Unculin, Bierzo, Spain,

Varietal: Mencia Alc. 13%  

Jose Antonio GarcĂ­a and his wife Julia Peña GarcĂ­a are at the forefront of the next-generation of vignerons in Bierzo. Jose spent his formative years in Barcelona where he worked in restaurants and gained valuable perspective and experience with fine wine. In 2009, Jose returned to recuperate his family’s 22 hectare vineyard holdings in the tiny village of Valtuille de Abajo, which is also home to his friend and former mentor RaĂşl PĂ©rez, where Jose made wine following enology school. All the work in the vineyard and winery are manual, with minimal intervention and input. The vineyards are farmed organically (notably they use the plentiful bounty of local walnut shells as fertilizer in the vineyard) with indigenous yeasts fermentations and minimal SO2 before bottling. A perfumed, floral nose opens up to a medium-bodied red, velvety and balanced, showcasing juicy red cherry and plum fruits. The finish is fresh, persistent, and satisfying. Pairs well with chorizo, paella with duck or rabbit, bacalao. $21.99

      Hotel Amenities Review

      I recently reported on our overnight trip to York Maine to visit the Nubble Lighthouse. In passing, I mentioned our hotel : Viewpoint Hotel. We had a room overlooking the lighthouse which we were able to book at nearly the last minute for a very reasonable price. So, for whatever reason, I wasn’t expecting to be staying in this ultra modern (for our experience) room. Amenities included one of those showers with 4-5 different shower spray options, electronic curtains, touchscreen mirrors and other items we are just not used to having available to us during a hotel stay. Here are two examples. I am not sure how I feel about the vertical placement of the toilet paper but I can report I loved the hospitality tray! What do you think about vertically placed toilet paper? I guess it’s not that much different from placing the roll on the back of the toilet for easy access…..
