What is a Monarch Butterfly explosion? The butterflies migrate to Mexico to keep from freezing to death in northern climates. The air is cool and moist in the trans-Mexican volcanic mountains, cool enough to keep them inactive and in a state of sexual immaturity, called diapause, but not so cold that they will freeze. As spring approaches and the Earth’s temperature begins to rise, the butterflies sleeping in the oyamel fir forests need to get out of the hot sun. Millions explode from the trees, drink water from nearby mountain streams, and move to a cooler, shadier spot on the mountain.

I hope you’ll come join our program Thursday night at 7pm at the Sawyer Free Library. We’ll be talking all things Monarchs including the current status of the butterfly’s migration, habitat destruction here in our own community, and most importantly, ways in which we can all help the Monarch possibly survive the warming of the earth.

We will be premiering the trailer for my forthcoming film about the Monarchs, too (also titled Beauty on the Wing). I hope to see you there!

Artistry of the Guitar

On Wednesday November 11, Ken Bonfield & Steve Davison will rekindle their national touring under the banner, Artistry of the Guitar. For those used to the in-the-round shows Bonfield has presented in the past, this will be a bit different.  As in most Artistry of the Guitar shows the two will each have a solo set lasting approximately 30 minutes, and that will be followed by 30 minutes of duets.  The duets are a bit of a change and something audiences have been asking for since the very beginning.  The music will be far ranging, from Celtic to Classical, Blues, Folk, Country, and include some good ol’ Travis thumbstyle fingerpicking. And as always they will be played on some amazing instruments; Bonfield’s Alan Carruth 11-string harp guitar and baritone guitar, and Davison’s Tony Yamamoto 12-string or his Sheldon Schwartz Oracle.

 Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop: Basics to Beyond

In this 90 minute workshop the guitarists will cover topics every guitarist should know; how to tune a guitar, how and when to change strings, how to properly hold the guitar, how to hold a pick, as well as discuss basic chord theory, and proper right and left hand technique. There will be plenty of time for Q & A. Bring a guitar, pencil, notepad and an open mind.

I’m what you call a Velcro dog. I love to be with my owner! Chinese Crested dogs were bred for Therapy dogs so we love to be with our family all of the time. I would love nothing more than to eat, sleep and breathe you. I love to snuggle under the covers of your bed, ride in the passenger seat of your car and sit on your lap while you watch T.V. but I hate going in a crate! I am a Special needs adoption because I have severe skin acne and will need weekly scrubs and bathes with special shampoos to get my skin back looking the way it should.  Know and love my breed?  Have time for a special guy who will be loyal and true?  Stop by the shelter to meet me or one of my furrier friends!

Bouchard fundraiser for Children’s Hospital

Hi Joe, 

My son Griffin started a fundraising campaign last year to benefit Boston Children’s Hospital, as a way to give back for the exceptional care he received there during two successful surgeries. This year, he has partnered with the Boston Bruins Foundation, the Corey C. Griffin NHL Pro-Am Alumni Tournament, and Bruins Alumni, and he has raised his personal fundraising goal to $3,000. Hoping you can put a link up on GMG to help raise money and awareness. Griffin is also coordinating a charity open skate for Christmas week, where all proceeds will go to Children’s Hospital. Last year Rick Middleton was kind enough to attend and give his support. More info will follow as we get closer to the event.

JASON GROW CAPE ANN WORLD WAR II VETERANS PHOTO SHOW OPEN TODAY, VETERANS DAY!

Don’t miss Jason Grow’s stunning Cape Ann World War II Veterans photography show on exhibit at Kyrouz Auditorium and open specially today, Veteran’s Day, from noon to four o’clock.

If you have a relative who served in WWII, bring a copy of a photo of them for the Memory Wall and post it (please don’t bring originals, they won’t be returned).

“This year, 2015, marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Thousands of men and women from Cape Ann – Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex – served our nation during World War II. More than 5,600 of roughly 25,000 residents from Gloucester alone joined the conflict serving in every branch of the military. Of those, 119 never made it home. As we recognize the end of that great conflict, we have to acknowledge that fewer and fewer of Our Greatest Generation remain. Their actions, their history, and their stories are an integral part of who we are as a nation. Though we continue to see conflict in the world, with men and women stepping up to serve our nation, it is unlikely that we will ever see such an epic, world-wide conflict again. My goal has been to photograph these remaining veterans from, or who now call home, Cape Ann, to honor and recognize their service to our country, and their place in our history. These are ordinary men and women who were called upon to do, at times, extraordinary things. To all our veterans, from every conflict, thank you. While I’m not often a fan of the movie version of some of my favorite books, this is one that I can’t wait to see.

If it is good enough for Nathaniel Philbrick, it is certainly good enough for me!  And, with Ron Howard at the wheel, it really can’t go wrong.

On Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Holy Family Parish will hold its annual Christmas Fair.  As always, there will be something of interest for all age groups.  We will have homemade Italian and American cookies, candy, knitted and crafted items, books, dolls, Chinese Auction, Christmas decorations White Elephant table, beautiful fresh pine decorations and much more.  There will also be the Basket Wheel.  Take and chance and see the Wheel comes up with some wonderful prizes!  See you at the Holy Family Country Christmas Fair!

Rockport Police Debut New Polaris eBike

Chief John Horvath is pleased to announce that the Rockport Police Department acquired a new Polaris eBike to expand its policing efforts in town.

Police are now riding the Rapid Response Team Safety Model, which is specifically designed for police use. It can reach up to 20 miles per hour with the assistance of a 750 watt motor. Officers Michael Anderson, William Budrow, Daniel Mahoney and Philip Wesley are certified for patrol on the eBike.
“The bike will be a valuable addition to our community policing efforts and provide our officers with an effective means to navigate the neighborhoods of Rockport while interacting with residents,” Chief Horvath said.

The department received the bike on Oct. 27, through asset forfeiture funds from Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, who is committed to furthering community policing in his cities and towns.

“This was a great opportunity to use drug money to enhance this department’s ability to patrol areas not easily accessed by a cruiser, as well as to be more accessible to the citizens they serve,” District Attorney Blodgett said.

Polaris develops and designs their eBikes using the latest green, electric power technology in conjunction with a sleek design. This allows riders to navigate narrow streets and lanes, which are often difficult for emergency vehicles and patrol cars to reach quickly. In turn, first responders expand their range and arrive faster while conserving energy.

“Polaris eBikes are proud to be supplying the Rockport Police Department with our Rapid Response Electric Bicycle to enhance their bike patrol, to assist in their community outreach initiative and numerous town events,” Polaris President Adam Rand said.
