Greg Bover’s Quote of the Week from George Carlin

June 18, 2011
“Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”
George Carlin (1937-2008)

A five-time Grammy award winner, Carlin’s often dark humor can be heard on 20 albums, in six books, and appears in ten movies. A native New Yorker, he made his name on the Ed Sullivan Shoe and the Tonight Show, first with Jack Paar and later and even more frequently with Johnny Carson, for whom he often substituted as host.  Carlin was the first host of Saturday Night Live. His best known routine was Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television, for which he was arrested and fined on several occasions. Liberal, brilliant, thoughtful and reflective, he took stand-up to a new level while supporting free speech and free thinking. He was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2008.

  1. Above all, Carlin was absolutely politically incorrect! If for no other reason, his abilty to get his points across BECAUSE of this lack of correctness made him all the more realistic. I’m sorry he’s gone – we need more like him!

  2. Thanks, Greg. GC was a one and only, always a straight route to the truth and funny as hell. A while ago, watching Arsenio Hall (I said a while), George Carlin was chatting with Arsenio and started to talk about growing up in Harlem and hanging out on the corner with his Doo-Wop boys. Then, he went to the piano, and I fell out of my chair.
I still play this YouTube video almost once a week. Who knew George Carlin was a soulful singer as well as a brilliant comic?

  3. I loved George Carlin. I’ve seen him in person at the Hampton Beach Casino years ago. I don’t think that smile came off my face the whole night. Awesome comedian.
