File Under Ridiculous!- “Bill would name quahog official Mass. shellfish”

The quahog???  Seriously?????  How bout the steamer clam?  Ever hear of of the Fried steamer clam  joints all over the Massachusetts coast?  I never once heard of a whole slew of restaurants dedicated to selling quahogs?  Uhm, The Clam Shack, Woodmans, Essex Seafood, the list goes on and on all based on the steamer clam.  For Christ’s sake, the lobster has more place as an official shellfish than the freaking quahog.  Lets see how much revenue is generated by each shellfish before we go handing out that designation to a third tier shellfish.  HELLOOOOOOOO!!!!!

What a crock of shit!  This bill must be sponsored by some South Shore hack.  Where’s our Goddamn representation????  North Shore Represent!!!!!!

Bill would name quahog official Mass. shellfish

June 5, 2011

BOSTON—The lowly quahog will be the official shellfish of Massachusetts if a bill making its way through the Statehouse becomes law.

The hard-shelled clam has helped feed generations of New Englanders and served as a form of currency for Native American tribes. The word "quahog" is a shortened version of the name given the clam by Narragansett Indians.

The bill that establishes the designation is scheduled for a public hearing Monday at the Statehouse before the Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development.

Here’s a little hard data to consider-

quahog

  1. Someone enlighten me……how did conch show up on this list?

Joey, why would you think these Beacon Hill pinheads would do anything logical? Our former representative wrote one bill in three terms – for a State number!! It’s 8 if you give a crap. Wouldn’t it seem logical to select something that “people from away” can pronounce! They’re just learning to say Gloucester correctly…….quahogs, at least it will be good for a few laughs!

  2. Joey, I thought this was a joke when I first read it. The full article says something about how students from Taunton proposed the quahog as a state emblem while they were learning about state government!? If you ask me, the students were only familiar with quahogs because the fictional town of Quahog, (Rhode Island) is where that ‘cartoon’ takes place–The Family Guy. I hate to think the students were proposing the name as a joke, or that no one did any real research before quahog was proposed. Guess I will have to write a letter…!

  3. Joey, you have to include both the Cherrystone and the Chowder in you total of Quahog Clams.

While there may be more Quahog than softshell clams sold each year in the state, I am all for the softshell. I lived on the other cape for four years before moving down here to florida and had a big clam flat across the street. I dug or raked both types, as well as razor clams every day of the open season. Most cape codders I ran into favor the softshell but they are the least available on most clam flats on the cape while Quahogs are everywhere.

  4. You need to tally up the Cherrystones, Chowders, and Littlenecks along with the Mixed Quahogs. They are all different sizes of Quahog clams. This brings the Quahog total to 80,150 bushels of Quahogs caught, compared to the 56,593 bushels of steamers. I’m just saying…let’s be accurate!
