Catherine Ryan submits City Arts and Gloucester updates for September

Hi Joey,

With Mayor Carolyn Kirk and the City’s leadership and support, here are some September updates for City Arts & Gloucester covering the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, Community Development Downtown Work Plan, Harbortown Cultural District and the Committee for the Arts.

From now through October 15th submit a design for a Cape Ann license plate!

· The single most successful MA specialty license plate is…the one celebrating Massachusettsother Cape. The Cape and Islands plate, created in 1996, features an image of Eastham’s Nauset Lighthouse and the cliffs of Siasconset and Aquinnah. It has raised $20.1 million and was ordered for 45,000 cars in the state. At that time, the Registry of Motor Vehicles allowed backgrounds. The new image space requirements are smaller squares to the left of the number.

· Feeling competitive? There are currently more than 216,641 specialty license plates in circulation in the state now, according to the Registry. The five top sellers?

image024 $20,000 million

image025 $18.3 million

image027 $7 million

image028 $4 million

· What do you think the 2 letters should be?

· For more information on how to apply, see GMG announcement https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2013/08/31/cape-ann-chamber-launches-drive-for-special-cape-ann-license-plate/

News from the downtown Harbortown Cultural District

Mayor Carolyn Kirk has committed the City’s major support as lead partner for our two Gloucester Cultural Districts!

Visit www.gloucesterharbortown.org

2/3 of the Harbortown partners have filled out a survey to prioritize goals with a focus on arts and culture. Other partners will complete theirs as they meet with their committees/boards. Example of one of the questions (‘in progress’ screen shot)

Harbortown partners and stakeholders attending the August meeting at Cape Ann Museum were lucky to hear an outstanding update from Director Ronda Faloon:

Reaching Out and Strengthening Within, Cape Ann Museum’s recently announced Capital Campaign will raise funds to make essential and innovative changes, dramatically improving the Museum’s ability to care for its nationally significant collection, as well as to tell the Cape Ann story and the pivotal role it has played in the American experience. Dynamic new interior and exterior spaces will be created. Outdated systems will be updated and underutilized spaces will be maximized to provide secure, more cost-effective and visitor-friendly settings for the collection. The Campaign will also support efforts to make the Museum’s collection more accessible by digitization, allowing it to be viewed on a redesigned website. Whether you are a physical or virtual visitor, the Museum hopes to transform your experience. http://www.capeannmuseum.org/support/capital-campaign/

We also participated in a special hands-on discussion and workshop about the goals for our district which was facilitated by Rebecca Borden Art Haven’s interim director. Art Haven and Cape Ann museum are founding partners of the Harbortown Cultural District.

Next Tuesday please come to City Hall and participate

Hi Joey

Let them know what you think! Next Tuesday, August 20th, Community Development will host the second of its three public meetings geared towards all thoughts/suggestions for downtown, see the details below:

Downtown Work Plan: Second Public Meeting Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 6:00 PM: The Conversation Continues!

Last month 90 people came out to City Hall to share what they love about downtown Gloucester and what they thought could be improved. It was a great discussion, and we hope you will join us for the second public meeting on the Downtown Work Plan.

Meeting 2 will be held next Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 6:00 PM in the Kyrouz Auditorium on the second floor of City Hall.

We will provide feedback on the first meeting, share additional information, and get your input on next steps. If you were able to attend the first meeting please spread the word, our goal is to involve as many folks as we can. If you cannot attend, always feel free to email your thoughts and ideas. Tom Daniel, tdaniel@gloucester-ma.gov

Gloucester’s Community Development Department is holding these public meetings to frame future opportunities and develop a set of shared values for downtown. This initiative is an opportunity to take a half-step back, talk with the community, and look at downtown holistically. We are building from past work and integrating on-going economic development efforts with various stakeholders. These combined discussions and efforts will inform the City’s work downtown.

The last public meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 (also at 6:00 PM in the Kyrouz Auditorium).

News from Downtown Workplan

Hi Joey,

There has been a lot of interest in the Downtown Work Plan. There were 90+ people on site at City Hall for the City’s presentation with Utile, and good discussion. Cape Ann TV was filming. Ahead of time, individuals and organizations sent in a range of comments and concerns via email or testimonials. For example here was one (and a repeat one at that) muni wifi rant plea from Joey:

https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2013/07/10/can-someone-explain-to-me-in-this-day-and-age-why-my-cell-phone-doesnt-have-service-in-the-heart-of-main-street-gloucester/

And have a read through the excellent detailed memo from the Downtown Development Commission.

No doubt the robust feedback was helped immeasurably by local media announcements. Thank you, GMG!

So, please come to the next meetings, and/or send along questions or comments to Tom  TDaniel@gloucester-ma.gov

Tom Daniel, Community Development Director, writes:

“As promised, we have posted the presentation to the City’s website. You may find it link to the presentation here: http://www.gloucester-ma.gov/index.aspx?NID=760&ART=2142&ADMIN=1. It is a large file and may take a couple of minutes to load. We will post future presentations to the website as well.”

Here are the dates for the next two public meetings to be held in the Kyrouz Auditorium of City Hall, from 6-8pm:

DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION

c/o City Clerk’s Office, 9 Dale Avenue, Gloucester, MA   01930

gloucesterinfo@gmail.com

July 9, 2013

Mr. Drew Kane, AICP
50 Summer Street
Boston, MA   02110

Dear Drew:

Last evening, the Downtown Development Commission discussed what it would like to see changed, added to or modified in the downtown in anticipation of the upcoming visioning meetings.  I encouraged all members to attend but we also felt that we wanted to send you something in writing listing our thoughts.

The following are the items brought up by the Commission:

Parking Garage  Many meetings were held about this idea a number of years ago.  The idea was to build a deck on top of the current parking lot by the police station.  DPW Director Mike Hale was involved in discussions and probably still has this information.

Development of I4C2  It is the hope of the DDC that this can be developed in some way that would benefit downtown and not just be kept as a parking lot.

Empire Building  The continued blight of this building is a concern.

Police Station/Central Fire/YMCA  Members hoped that there would soon be a plan for the fate of these buildings.

Police Station Steps  The terrible condition of these steps roped off with police tape is not an attractive picture.  The DDC wondered if there was a short-term solution since any garage or selling of the police station would be long term.

Ornamental Lights/Brick Sidewalks  The only sections of Main Street without this streetscape are the middle sections, which were last renovated in the 1970’s.  Members would like to see this area tied into the look of the East End and West End.

Trees  The trees on Main Street have probably never been pruned.  Many hold both decorative old lights that no longer work and some have an abbreviated version of new lights.  We feel that there should be some work done on these trees.

West End Ornamental Lights  These lights were installed many years ago and the DDC thinks they have never been cleaned.  This is one of the reasons they appear to be so dark.  The DDC would like to see them cleaned and repainted, if necessary.

Benches  There are now a variety of styles of benches downtown.  We would like to work towards the replacement of the benches, many of which are wood and splintered, to have one consistent look.

Trash Barrels  The DDC bought a number of black trash barrels for downtown and they are showing their age.  We would like to re-examine the type of barrels and work on eventually replacing them.  Apparently a couple of them were done in by snowplows this past winter.

Preserve America Signs  The Commission would like to continue this signage program.  We also think there needs to be some type of protocol in place when one is damaged or disappears as has happened.

Gilham & Gander Study  The DDC would like this study reintroduced as it had many worthwhile aspects.

Stacy Boulevard  The conditions of the railings are in terrible shape and are to the point of being dangerous.  Hundreds of people walk this area daily.  We understand that this would be a long term and expensive project but it needs to be stated.  Having new grass and a working sprinkler system on the Boulevard is a step in the right direction as it is a gateway into Gloucester for so many.

Drew, hope these are helpful.  Looking forward to seeing you Wednesday night.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Silveira
Chair
DDC

6pm tomorrow night City Hall focus on downtown

the game’s afoot: fun with urban planning

Hi Joey,

Ok. So Downtown. I know, Joey, you want more block parties among other stuff! What else everyone?? What’s on the table for you? Cycling? Parking? Arts?  Jobs?

We really hope there will be a good turn-out for tomorrow’s 6PM public meeting at City Hall to discuss thoughts on downtown. All of downtown. It’ll be a good chance for everybody to knock about what they like downtown, what they think could be better, and to listen to others’ views.

Busy? The next 2 meetings will be on August 20 and September 17.

Hate to speak in public? That’s ok, too. If you have a comment, question, idea, impression…bring it, send it! Even if it’s a repeat (squeaky wheel…just sayin’) Everyone can email anytime and have voice.

Email Tom Daniel, Community Development: TDaniel@gloucester-ma.gov

No city plan is an ultimate fixed anchor.  At any window in time, planning involves simultaneous sweeping aerials along with pockets of hyper focus. Responsible cities explore multiple scenarios and need to be adaptable and resilient– and try. Cities by nature are in flux. Gloucester tries! It has heart.

We’re lucky that Gloucester has had years of a dedicated and talented community development department including folks like Tom Daniel—the current Community Development Director who is orchestrating these evenings– and former Community Development Directors Sarah Garcia (now Harbor Planning Director), Dale Brown, and others, along with responsive teams including Marie Demick, Gregg Cademartori, Matt Coogan, Steve Winslow and so many more. Thanks so much for doing this work.

Help Draft the Next Chapter of Downtown’s Story

What do you love about downtown Gloucester? What do you think could be improved?

The work to build a great downtown is never done. There have been several recent accomplishments including the City Hall restoration project, HarborWalk, and Harbortown Cultural District. And we continue to move forward.

Given these and other accomplishments, now is a good time to come together to talk about the next chapter of work downtown. Gloucester’s Community Development Department is holding three public meetings to frame future opportunities and develop a set of shared values for downtown. The resulting plan will inform the City’s work downtown.

Your participation is important. Please plan to attend all three public meetings over the summer.

The public meetings will be held on:

Wednesday, July 10

Tuesday, August 20

Tuesday, September 17

All meetings will begin at 6:00 PM and will be held in the Kyrouz Auditorium on the second floor of City Hall.

CFTA hosts introduction meeting with Gloucester arts group and Gloucester ‘s new Community Development Director Tom Daniel

Catherine Ryan submits-

Hi Joey,

Tom Daniel is the Community Development Director for the City of Gloucester . His work is focused on continuing to support the vibrancy of Gloucester with its diverse economy and numerous amenities.

Since the arts are such an important component of Gloucester and community development, on April 4, 2013, the Gloucester Committee for the Arts hosted an open introduction meeting with Tom Daniel for a lunchtime meet and greet. Committee for the Arts Chair, Judith Hoglander, felt that this meeting would provide us with an opportunity to get to know Tom, and for him to better understand the importance of arts in Gloucester . It was wonderful!  Many who attended wore more than one hat,  so to speak, and have been engaged in several volunteer activities around town for many years. We are a lucky community. Among the folks present were artist Beth Williams, Cape Ann Artisans; Director of Cape Ann Museum Ronda Faloon; Ruth Mordecai, Artist and Director Goetemann Residency Program Director; Brenda Malloy, artist and Rocky Neck Art Colony; Jo Ann Castano, Arts Gloucester; Matthew Swift, Trident Gallery (to open soon on Main St.); Anne Robinson, seARTS and Cape Ann TV; Suzanne Gilbert, North Shore Arts Association; Susan Erony, artist, educator, Gloucester Writer’s Center; Marty Morgan, artist; Carol Gray, Director Sawyer Free; and members of the Committee for the Arts- Judith Hoglander, Dale Brown, Marcia Hart, Catherine Ryan and new member and artist Sinikka Nogelo.

We are so grateful that Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library offered the Friend’s Room space for this gathering. We learned that Tom is originally from central MA, and that he loves arts and culture, and how both are conduits to broadly experiencing our community. He shared examples of his advocacy for the arts throughout his career with examples from Minneapolis , MN , and most recently Salem , MA . We look forward to more discussions.
