Summer’s almost here! Yes, yes, Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and to celebrate, let’s have a ball! So here goes! This Thursday at the Rhumb line, welcome back Ms. Lydia Warren. Winner of many awards, this lady is known for her stinging guitar and plaintive vocals. She always wrecks the joint! She’s bringing along Mr. Ephraim Lowell, on drums and hopefully, Matt Kelly on gootar. We’ll see. Should be a blast.

He took that laptop all over the orchestra and balcony to make sure the sound is perfect in every seat at The Larcom Theatre! Our new digidesign SC-48 consoleSee how the Meyer 600-HP sub-woofers disappear next to the stairs. Still good seats left in the Balcony where this picture was taken. Get them here!
Since we discovered the Larcom Theatre and produced our first concert there a year ago this weekend, Gloucester’s singer/ songwriter / multi-instrumentalist and ace sound man, Will Hunt has brought in his gear and, together with Bradley Royds, they’ve mixed our shows to wide acclaim (see a review here).
And we figured, if we’re going do it, we might as well do it right.
On Wednesday, Jon Coretto and his crew from WHB Concert Production (the people who revamped the sound at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom) installed the top of the line: Meyer M’elodie curvilinear array loudspeakers with 600-HP sub-woofers and Galileo system processor, Digidesign SC-48 console and 6 JBL VP 7212 MDP stage monitors.
Plus we have a 56 channel snake splitter for bands that want to make studio quality live recordings or simply MUST have their monitors mixed on stage.
Now if you don’t much care about all that techno-babble, just know this: IT SOUNDS AMAZING!

Before I even start, let me please thank you all for very nice year of playing music and for allowing me to invade your brainstems weekly with potentially dangerous information. I wish you and yours the very nicest Holiday Season. and hope for many more!
Okay, now back to it: Our post-xMas healing process begins Thursday night with the arrival of Ms. Lydia Warren. This lady knocked the fillings out of my teeth at this summer’s Glou. Blues Festival. A wonderful songstress, vocalist and ornery guitarist, she’ll have you cavorting and gavotting in the aisles, whatever that means. She’ll be bringing along her insignificant other, too, in the form of Mr. Matt Kelley, a dynamic and road-worthy guitarist, to fill in the blanks. Squeeks and other percussion by that tonsorially-challenged Drumbo, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris. I will have gained 5 pounds.
And here are distant early warnings about upcoming events:
Jan.2 Rik and Alec Razdan with the A-minus orchestra, includes me. Come celebrate the beginning of suicide season!
Jan.9 Andrew Clark. The tootin’ Torquemada of the tenor is out to destroy your will! Billy Loosigian rocks out!
Jan.16 Chris “Stovall” Brown and his tooth-biting glitar!
Jan.23 The Good Old Salty Jazz Band. We get encores at the Senior center all the time. Come see what you’ve been missing whilst you doze in your Barcalounger.
Jan.30 Johnny Carwash aka Bob Davis steps up to your upper plate and knocks your teeth out. Pyrotechnics (again) by Billy Loosigian, who was forced to learn a jazz chord for this date. Instrumental and surf madness ensues.

The heat’s on high this week as we cave in to our animal desires with the welcome addition of a new musician to our Augean Stables: Ms. Lydia Warren. This gal, tender as an egg from a bluebird’s nest, absolutely wrecked the joint at the Glou. Blues Fest a coupla weeks ago. She plays scorching glitar, and sings like an angel. You gotta czech this out. She blew me away!
Worse, I’ve got the hottest guitarist on the Boston scene, Mr. Chris “Stovall” Brown, to back her up. And, completing the circuit, Mr. Forrest “Frosty” Padgett is gonna keep time for us. I need a doctor….if you miss this, you should get burial insurance.
Bob Hastings, co-producer of the Gloucester Blues Festival, sent me an email this morning saying they just signed Lydia Warren. We saw her open for Savoy Brown at the Bull Run on December 1 (see post about that concert here). Alone on stage with her strat, she captured the crowd with her soulful vitality. At the Blues Fest, she’ll have her full band!
