Lobster Cove String Quartet: UNITED

The Lobster Cove String Quartet gives the third and final performance of its debut season, Friday June 14 at the Annisquam Village Church @ 7:30 pm. The Gloucester-based group presents UNITED, an adventurous program of all-American music, featuring an array of iconoclastic works by Henry Cowell, Philip Glass, Samuel Barber, Antonín Dvořák, and Scott Moore. From the weird and arcane, to the contemporary and austere, to some of the most beloved music of the last 130 years—with a playful old-time fiddle romp thrown in—the quartet unites to celebrate a few of the many threads which make up the ever-evolving tapestry of American music.

Wood, Wire, & Song – Crossover Chamber Music in Annisquam

The nascent Lobster Cove String Quartet widens its wake with guest artists in a concert Sunday, March 3rd, at 3:00 PM at the Annisquam Village Church.  With windows looking out on the Cove itself, the concert is designed by Artist-in-Residence, violinist and composer Scott Moore—joined here by a glittering lineup of special guests in an eclectic program of new music as inviting as it is fresh. Pianist and songwriter Elizabeth Ziman anchors the lineup with what NPR Music calls “beautiful, thoughtful, smart music largely built around her very approachable and warm voice.”

The March 3rd Wood, Wire, & Songprogram comprises music written in the last 30 years: the plaintive strains of John Tavener’s mysterious Akhmatova Songs; the elemental crispness of recent Pulitzer-winner Caroline Shaw’s Valencia (composed in Manchester-by-the-Sea); frequent Kronos Quartet collaborator Osvaldo Golijov’s visceral setting of Emily Dickinson, How Slow the Wind; and Moore’s own setting of Shakespeare’s sunny Sonnet 18, a world premiere. Classical soprano Theodora Nestorova joins Ziman, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dietrich Strause, and quartet members Moore, Erica Pisaturo (violin), Brandon White (viola), and Alex Fowler (cello). Notoriously multi-talented Club Passim stalwart Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray LaMontagne) contributes string arrangements.

  • $35, suggested contribution.

Lobster Cove String Quartet debuts at historic Annisquam venue

Gloucester, MA – The Lobster Cove String Quartet makes its debut

Saturday evening, September 16, 2023 at 7:30pm.

The white walls of the historic Annisquam Village Church will become

the canvas for a soundscape of swirling tone-colors, as the Gloucester-based

group presents To Paint the Night: a diverse bill of fare showcasing the richness

and versatility of the string quartet format.

The program opens with Astor Piazzolla’s fiery Four for Tango, before

probing the dark night of the soul which is Dmitri Shostakovich’s String

Quartet No. 8—dedicated by the composer “to the victims of fascism and

war.” Thelonious Monk’sRound Midnight, newly arranged for quartet by

violinist and composer Scott Moore, is all blues and purples and grays:

lush, playful, and mysterious. The concert closes with the sensual

Impressionism of Claude Debussy’s radiant String Quartet in G minor.

The Lobster Cove String Quartet is the latest creation of Scott Moore, Artist-in-

Residence at the Annisquam Village Church. Moore is joined by members

Erica Pisaturo (violin), Brandon White (viola), and Alex Fowler (cello).

Admission is by donation ($35 suggested), and a reception with the artists

will follow the performance.
