Charlotte and I had a fantastic time at Maritime Gloucester Heritage Day, with much, much climbing in and out of the giant lobster pot, seeing friends, art activities, exploring the touch tank, and getting to know a Boa Constrictor 🙂

Breaking News!
A male King Eider is currently on the backshore. Two gentlemen from Carlisle were kind enough to allow me to look through their scope and Michelle Barton reports that it was there on Friday, too. The eider can be seen while standing at the small cleared space on the side of the road, across from The Elks at Bass Rocks. The King Eider is a spectacularly colored bird and is too far offshore for the capabilities of my 200mm lens but here is a beautiful photo from Wiki Commons Media. King Eiders forage on seabeds up to 82 feet deep and I imagine that is what the diving eider spotted this morning was doing. Happy Birding!
Bring on the Rain – I Know Where I’m Going
I considered posting a gloomy photo of rain running down a window pane. That could be depressing and sappy, but it’s not my style. When rain and storms block in the way, don’t slow down, stay the course. Move forward to where you want to go. During a rainy Gloucester Schooner Race, Captain Steve Douglass looks ahead, consults his charts, and sees beyond the rain. I do not look at the rain dripping down the glass, but rather navigate as Captain Douglass does: Carry on toward your destination. I welcome the impending rain.
Schooner Festival Up Close on the King Eider and Lady Jillian
Capt Steve and Capt Pete gave everyone an up close view of the schooners in the parade of Sails, and their trip to the starting Line. Photographers, Parents and children were thrilled to see the schooners in full sail up close. King Eider and Lady Jillian are operated by Cape Ann Harbor Tours. See Slide Show below of all the happy faces.

King Eider, Gloucester Harbor Tours
Looking for something different to do? Check out the King Eider Gloucester Harbor Tour. Captain Douglass specifically designed this boat for good site lines and comfort for his passengers. Far too many folks that live and grow up in Gloucester never get down to the waterfront. Make it a priority, have some fun and check out Gloucester Harbor.
