Kevin Zelnio, from Deep-Sea News recognized GoodMorningGloucester yesterday in this blog entry. It’s always nice when someone thinks your stuff is interesting enough to share with others, so thanks Kevin.
What was cool about his post was that he linked to a research report that study that shows how half blue lobsters get to be half blue.
If you get a chance check out Deep-Sea News, its packed with stuff that folks like us with ties to the ocean can’t get enough of.

You know it’s going to be a beautiful day when it’s nice enough that you can lay down on the pavement to get just the shot you want without freezing your nads off.
Mark Ring, Captain of The F/V Stanley Thomas’ truck.
Mark Ring’s Truck -Lobstermans Truck Series, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
Here is the second truck in my lobstermens truck series.
It belongs to Mark Ring. Mark opted for a fairly basic GMC truck without 4 wheel drive. Since he ties his boat up right down the street from his house, there isn’t anyplace critical that he needs to get in the snow so 2 wheel drive is a fine option for him.
Instead of a spray-in bed liner or drop-in plastic liner, Mark opted for a rubber mat which fits snugly along the contours of his truck bed and wheel wells.
There are pros and cons to each type of truck bed protection. The pros of a rubber mat is that it is very grippy. Things don’t tend to move around much. Rubber mats are also relatively cheap in comparison to a drop-in or spray-in liner. The cons are that they don’t protect up the inside walls of the truck bed.
Mark doesn’t need to lug much gear or bait around because he stores his traps right here at our dock and we provide the bait for him so most of his truck use is light duty compared to a lobsterman that chases bait around or store traps somewhere else.
Here he has a couple of coils of rope that he took the knots out of over the slow winter months in his workshop/garage.

Old School Door, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
Here is the door walked in and out of gazillions of times by fishermen, dock workers, and family.
You can see the paint at the bottom scrapped away by years of boot kicking. Generally when your hands are covered with fish you kick the door open so you don’t leave any fish juice behind for the next person coming in.
I’m not sure who put the “VOTE FOR PAPI” sticker on the door, probably Frankie.
Ned’s Deserts and Free Cheese Sample Plate, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
This is the cheese that the cheese swiper was clipping when the owners weren’t looking.
I say if someone puts out cheese samples you should take one and if you really wanted another one you should politely ask.
The cheese swiper was scarfing em down every time they turned their backs.
What a rat.
For Cousin Larry, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
Yesterday was our 7 year anniversary and we were supposed to go out for dinner but my MIL wasn’t feeling up to babysitting.
On my way home from work I got a message from my cousin Larry. He called to let me know that he got a chuckle out of the tail on the shrimp blog entry titled “Chefs, Don’t Do This…” Larry said in his message that leaving the tail on the shrimp in a messy dish is a pet peeve of his too.
The next call I get is from the Mrs asking if I could pick up Thai food for dinner since she figured we were eating out for our anniversary.
Lo and behold I get to the Pad Thai back to the house and wouldn’t you know it, they left the tail on the damn shrimp!
Bastards!
I had to take a picture for cousin Larry.

The trees over on Hog Island haven’t filled in yet. Once they do, this vista will be even more beautiful.
Leo D Allen Painting, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
Here is another of Leo D Allen’s paintings on display at Passports. He has a gallery in Rockport that I’m meaning to get over to to photograph more of his paintings.
I dig it.
Proposal Movie Filming Update, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
Lots of activity around the set at Pier 7 this morning.
The parking lot at Cripple Cove has been coned off, there are many many huge trucks with equipment there, and what looks like a director going over the scened waving his arms around. I speculate he is giving direction to the camera man.
I’ll try to give updates and gets some up close shots of the stars when they arrive.

Essex Cows, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
I don’t know who owns this land in Essex, but good for them that they can afford to keep the open space for the cows and people passing by.
Is there a certain number of cows or plantings that one would need to keep on their property to qualify for farmland status on the tax rolls?
