About Gloucester Net & Twine building –

Besides the leather factory (founded in 1932), Strong Group businesses on site for three generations of the Cutter family include advertising and product and promotional projects. Prior to the leather business, the historic factory was built and incorporated in 1884. Gloucester Net & Twine quickly ramped up as a major ancillary supplier for the fishing industry. It’s one of the largest oldest factories still standing and was placed on the National Historic Registry in 1996. Eight volumes of historic plan books for Gloucester Net & Twine Company are in the collection of Phillips Library, Peabody Essex Museum.

Gloucester Net & Twine Company is included in the National Park Service maritime history trail in MA. Gloucester is one of the cities with the most sites–only Boston has more. Besides this historic factory building, other Gloucester sites on the maritime trail include: Our Lady of Good  Voyage, East Gloucester Square Historic District, Man at the Wheel, Schooner Adventure, Ten Pound Light,  Eastern Point Light Station, and Annisquam Harbor Light Station. – C. So this is the Danvers RMV (plenty of room for another branch at #GloucesterMA Crossing)

RMV-Danvers Shopping Plaza_2019 December 26_Danvers Mass._ photograph © copyright C. Ryan.jpg

The new Registry of Motor Vehicles is situated in a long empty, 6,983 ft’ free-standing building in the Danvers Crossing Shopping Plaza, 8 Newbury St. (Rt. 1), Danvers, Massachusetts. The Hardcover and Costco are across the highway. Businesses sharing the parking lot include Ann & Hope, Dollar Store, David’s Bridal, and Monkey Joe’s. (I didn’t know there were still Ann & Hopes.) A number of vacancies remain. The shopping center was originally built out in 1990.

Prior to this move, the RMV had landed at Liberty Tree Mall. This new branch was expected to receive 500 visitors per day. It’s open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. rather than the 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. broadcast ahead of time.  We have been a couple of times recently to this new one; they were quite helpful. (Make certain to arrive by 4pm on any given day or you’ll have to make a second trip. We learned this the hard way arriving for the first time at 4:35pm.) I never visited the RMV when it was in the mall. I have mostly been to the Revere location.

Reporter Paul Leighton followed the RMV Danvers relocation for the Salem News,

“The good news for North Shore residents is that the Registry of Motor Vehicles is finally planning to open a branch in Danvers after two years without one in this area. The bad news? The new place will cost taxpayers a lot more than the old one.

The registry announced last week that it had signed a 10-year lease to open an RMV branch in a former restaurant building at the Danvers Crossing shopping plaza on Route

The rent for the first year will be $350,616 — nearly 10 times as much as the $41,729 that the state paid in the final year of its lease at the Liberty Tree Mall.

A spokesman for the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, which handles leasing for the state, said the agency does not comment on lease negotiations.

Danvers state Rep. Ted Speliotis acknowledged the new lease payments will be much higher at Danvers Crossing. But he said that’s more a reflection on the great deal the state had at the Liberty Tree Mall.

Speliotis said the registry moved into the mall during tough economic times, when malls and other retail landlords were desperate for tenants. Liberty Tree even offered the space for free for the first three years, from 2010 to 2013.

“We were in the worst recession of our lifetime and the mall needed the foot traffic,” Speliotis said. “That was a once-in-a-lifetime deal.” Read the full article,  “RMV deal finally done, but taxpayers will pay” April 30, 2018: here

The Danvers RMV wasn’t busy the times we went December 2019. Still, it remains a bit of a slog* to get to that RMV (or Revere or Wilmington) from Gloucester. Having been to this new one, I’m not sure why there can’t be a branch in Gloucester as well, perhaps at Gloucester Crossing.

*Having to go 5x in the past two months plus needing to get there by 4pm makes it a slog. Revere and this are a toss up.

One store employee said everything outside is Market Basket’s responsibility. Not sure why they’re not emptied or why people keep adding. It reeks back here. (Barrels by pizza shop were empty.) It is their front door entrance.

DMV RMV at Gloucester Crossing Part 2: Legislators Urge Decision on new site for Registry

img_20170203_093649The decision on the location for a new North Shore DMV registry branch remains undecided.  There are service centers on the other peninsula, Cape Cod. Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard host full DMV service centers as do towns with smaller populations, like Greenfield and North Adams. There isn’t a uniform state model.

The day after the GMG post musing What about a DMV branch at Gloucester Crossing?, Paul Leighton wrote an article in yesterday’s Gloucester Daily Times “Legislators urge decision on new site for Registry” Thursday February 2, 2017 with more info.

According to the article: “Six property owners submitted bids in October. A spokesman for the Division of Capital Asset Management & Maintenance, which oversees state leasing, said those bids are still being reviewed…In addition to Speliotis, local legislators who signed the letter to the state included state Sen. Joan Lovely of Salem and state Reps. Paul Tucker of Salem, Tom Walsh of Peabody, Jerry Parisella of Beverly, Lori Ehrlich of Marblehead and Brad Hill of Ipswich, who represents Manchester.”

Leighton’s prior Gloucester Daily Times article about the DMV branch location “Registry considers Peabody, Beverly sites for new branch” was published July 21, 2016.

GMG Readers Poll- What Would You Like To See Fill The Space Vacated By Five Guys?

If those of you who have Facebook or Twitter or Google+ could share this I’d love to see a really large number of votes to get a true picture of what most people want, Thanks. (You can share it by clicking the little icons below the post)

Holy Canoli Batman there were a lot of responses to this.  Some which I think are completely ridiculous due to the space available where Five Guys was located up at Gloucester Crossing.

Anyway here are your options, vote away!

Gloucester Crossing Market Basket

Much like the Danvers store there were plenty of cashiers on hand and check out was a breeze.  The staff is very well trained and helpful.  My guess is that they are trained that if you make eye contact with them that they are supposed to ask if you need help finding something because every single employee I looked at asked how they could help.

As I was leaving the store with my three small bags of groceries a young man asked if he could carry my groceries to my truck.  I didn’t need the help but I imagine that women with children or elderly folks would really appreciate this service.

If you listened to the video interview the Director of Operations Manager David tells us they hired over 270 new Gloucester employees.  That’s pretty damn good.  I understand that these aren’t the highest paying jobs but when you see these teenagers dressed in ties and well groomed showing up for work it’s a whole lot better than seeing them kicking around unemployed on the street.

If a family of four spent an average of $200 per week on groceries before Market Basket came to town, that bill will be reduced by at least $50 per week.  That’s $2600 per year which goes directly back into Gloucester households.  For some folks that’s a tax bill for the year.
