Donna Ardizonni stopped by, and said she was going to try and get onto the HBO set. No luck, but if there was anyone who could, it would be her. Island to Island

I had a visit recently from two folks of Jamestown, RI. I have some familiarity with Jamestown, and we talked a bit. I sent them off with a sticka' and an assignment to represent in front of their favorite pub flying the Red Sox banner. They came thru: "Pat O'Leary & Ed Godfrey had a great time in Gloucester (Ed likes the historic photos) & enjoyed the Paul Brady concert at Shalin Liu center Rockport. Will return again but not in summer, do not like the circus. We find fall and winter to be the best, just like here on the island in Jamestown." Surprise on the Lobster Dock

Twenty of us, authors, contributors, and friends, converged on Captain Joe's lobster dock. This is a very industrial space, with herring parts on the floor. — Twenty five of us, authors, contributors, and friends, and family converged on Captain Joe’s lobster dock. We entered singing Happy Birthday. There was only one time I felt this level of camaraderie, and that was with my fellow rowers at the Maritime Gloucester rowing program. There they are right off the dock. This is a very industrial space, with herring parts on the floor. But the view isn’t bad. The mug up was held up in Joey’s office. Industrial.

Joey was totally surprised. Kim Smith made the tiramisu birthday cake and delivered it with candles burning. Melissa Cox is on Joey’s left.

A very nice couple from Melrose stopped in for a second time today, and bought a Rockport mug. "We're renting in Rockport for the winter," they said. Where? Pigeon Cove. I just happened to be framing this photo at the time. They're now on the gallery mailing list for future events. They love it here. Who wouldn't? This summer, a guy came into my gallery wearing the GMG hat. He was pretty cool. I went outside to photograph him and his dog for GMG, but in no time a Brazilian woman walked into the shot. He gave me this look of: "Hey, this just happens." What is the magnet here? Is it the guy, the dog, the shiny green truck, the woman, or the hat? You tell me! After a few minutes, she walked on. I think we've got the beginnings of a short story here. — This summer, a guy came into my gallery wearing the GMG hat. He was pretty cool. I went outside to photograph him and his dog for GMG, but in no time a Brazilian woman walked into the shot. He gave me this knowing look of: “Hey, this just happens.” What is the magnet here? The fish are sorted into what were called checker boxes, to separate the cod by size and quality. Todays fishermen uses boxes or totes. Built in 1658, the Babson Cooperage is considered to be the first factory on Cape Ann. James Babson made barrels that were filled with fish and shipped to England, and other places around the world. I think the plaque tells it all: JAMES BABSON FARM “GRANTED BY SPECIAL TOWN ACT DECEMBER 23, 1658 JAMES AND HIS MOTHER, ISABEL, WERE THE FIRST BABSONS TO REACH AMERICA, ARRIVING IN 1632. JAMES’ FATHER DIED ON SHIPBOARD WHILE CROSSING. TOWN RECORDS SHOW THAT ISABEL WAS A VERY ACTIVE KINDLY AND BELOVED MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY. SHE DIED IN 1661. JAMES WAS A COOPER WHO MADE BARRELS, ETC. In 1914, Dogtown was still pretty bare. What an amazing landscape. I'm sure the Lanesville photographer John I. Coggeshall, leveled his camera and this is the true contour of the land The tracks in the road look like it's used. I guess they were still raising pigs and vegetables. Nobody owned Dogtown, so why take your enterprise elsewhere, when cleared land with roads were available for free? Keokuk, Iowa? We have a Long Reach

What does this young lady, Nicole Kelley, have to do with us on Cape Ann? Read on.

I made contact with David Grimes, who has relatives here. I asked him to send a few photos of Keokuk. One is of Chief Keokuk of the Sauk tribe. (1767-1848) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keokuk_(Sauk_leader). David told me that this is the 100th anniversary of the Chief Keokuk statue, in the park where he is buried.

The crowning. This is not your ordinary beauty queen. Miss Iowa, Nicole Kelly, is a 23 year old Keokuk resident.. So here she is, and goes to the same church as David Grimes, who has Cape Ann connections. Two very fun folks. On the left is Heather Chalk, who works at the Mt. Adams Bar & Grill, which was the first bar in Ohio to obtain a liquor license in Ohio after Prohibition. On the right is is Ed Gollar, also of Cincinnati, who manages a company, and ironically sells a keychain device, which will measure your blood/alcohol content. You can see it at breathkey.com. This is the "Old Pearce Cellar" in 1923. Dogtown was an open landscape and abandoned at that time. Now it's a jungle, and I advise visitors not to go there late in the day, never alone, and always with a charged up cell phone. I've been to Dogtown 50 times, and I always get lost. People will cry and panic when they're lost there. But you can hear the car traffic not too far away. Bushwhack your way out. She Could Be My Daughter

It doesn't happen every day, that someone you connect with returns for a second visit. Duane and Sandy from MI from yesterday's story returned, and as we were speaking Diana Long came in. As we talked, Sandy turned to Diana and said: "You look like the daughter I never had." Wow, you decide. — It doesn’t happen every day, that someone you connect to returns for a second visit. Shortly thereafter, Sandy left the gallery soon and returned with a gift for Diana, a huge silver cuff. They had just met minutes before in my gallery and I am speechless. Neither of these women will forget this for the rest of their lives, and neither will I.

I'll also never forget these folks. Duane is made of solid granite, which you can feel if you pat him on the back. He needs the cane, but I'll be his cane any time. His combat incident resulted in 3 fatalities, but he survived. He's a 25% Chippowa American Indian, whose tribe has a reservation at Red Lake MN. — I’ll also never forget these folks. So just to wrap this up, here is Duane in basic training in '69 at Fort Knox, TN. He's standing next to a 114 amphibious personnel carrier. His Chippawa name is " Wind in His Tail." I wish Duane and Sandy a fair wind, and smooth sailing. After being here for one day, they said to me: "I think we could live here." I sincerely hope so. — So just to wrap this up, here is Duane in basic training in ’69 at Fort Knox, TN. He’s standing next to a 114 amphibious personnel carrier. A Hero Shot, in More Ways Than One

As I was walking to work today, this guy stepped aside for me to pass. As I walked by him, I mentioned how much I liked his cane, not realizing what it symbolized. I saw him and his wife later sitting on the bench in front of Palazolas. So you all know me... This is Duane Bellish and his loving wife of 54 years, Sandy. They live in Grayling, northern Michigan. They love Glosta', having never even been here before. "All the people we've met have been fun, interesting, and most helpful. Fred, you alone have made our weekend." We spent maybe an hour together talking. They are devout Christians, and blessed me half a dozen times. Me, I bless them only once, but to the power of 20. Duane served in the US Army in '69 and '70. He was a Tank Commander in the 25th Infantry, Driving 112APC tanks on the Cambodian Border (Base Camp Cuchi). Two Purple Hearts and still carrying shrapnel. Today, Duane needs his cane, and with Sandy sells home grown plants, cut flowers, at the Detroit Eastern Market, which is 150+ years old. They agree that Detroit is not doing well. I gave them a GMG sticka', but was too intrigued with them to include it in the photo. My grandpa Yewell also got two purple hearts in the trenches of France in WWI. — Duane served in the US Army in ’69 and ’70. I was having a great day until I parked near my gallery on Main Street, put the keys in my pullover fleece jacket, grabbed my backpack, fed the meter, and then realized "OMG, no keys!" They had slipped out of my pocket before I got out of the Jeep. Can this ruin my day? Not if I don't let it. I went next door to Bananas, which keeps a spare key for me. Once inside, I got tied up with people, including a special friend, Bonnie Goodwin, youngest daughter of the Elf Child. She's the minister of the church in Truro, Cape Cod. My car troubles - What troubles?
