My View of Life on the Dock
Ho, Ho. Ho! Marry Christmas with music, and what do you get?…The gift that keeps on giving, even during your nightmares. In the spirit of Xmas passed and presence, I offer you my favorite crowd- stomping musical buddies this coming black lung season, so, let’s get going!
This Thursday nite sees the return of that comedic, string-biting master of guitar and harp: Mr.Chris “Stovetop” Brown. Long a mainstay of the Rhode Island and Boston scene, his antics and dry humor will have you on your worst behavior! Forrest “Frosty” Padgett, drum-dribbler and all-around go to guy handles the boom booms. I’ll be the object of derision. Phew! what a nite!
Sunday, I’ll be re-living the nightmare at O’Reilly’s Bar in Newton. With Chris and a cast of thousands. Call for info.

John Hammond Weaves the Fabric of American Rock N’ Blues
Rockport, MA – Profoundly influential blues artist John Hammond will perform at The Shalin Liu Performance Center on Friday, December 12th. Hammond has been a blues fixture for decades and recently joined hallowed company as an inductee into the Blues Hall of Fame. The soulful Grammy winner is known as a consummate triple threat musician (on vocals, guitar, and harmonica), who’s gutsy blues vocals evoke gritty roadhouse memories. Boston’s rising star Amy Black will open the show. Tickets for this concert start at $29.
Mr. Hammond, a blues legend with a voice like Robert Johnson’s and a demeanor that belies his tear-it-up might before an audience, has a history of being on hand during significant cultural moments.
John has so many stories to tell, including putting the band together for the young Jimi Hendrix that launched his international career. In fact, Hammond is famously the only person who ever had both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix in his band at the same time, during a five-night stint at the Gaslight Café in New York City in 1966. It was also John’s recording session with Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm which led to Bob Dylan hiring those same players, later to become known as The Band. Bob Dylan reputedly asked John’s advice on some guitarists. John invited Bob to his session with the Hawks and as they say, “the rest is history.”
John Hammond has become a legend in his own right. He’s garnered 8 Grammy nominations, including a Grammy win, multiple blues music awards, acoustic artist of the year, and blues hall of fame inductee. Hammond’s history is a who’s who of Blues, and includes performances or recordings with Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Duane Allman, Mike Bloomfield, JJ Cale, Tom Waits, The Band, John Lee Hooker, Dr. John and many, many more. He is known as the embodiment of the quintessential acoustic Blues troubadour, always serving tradition by pouring his heart and soul into full-bodied interpretations of the classics through the simple combination of brilliant guitar, rack harmonica, and intensely expressive vocals.
“John’s sound is so compelling, complete, symmetrical and soulful with just his voice, guitar and harmonica, it is at first impossible to imagine improving it,” says Tom Waits. “He’s a great force of nature. John sounds like a big train coming. He chops them all down.”

We’re dive-bombing the good old Rhumb Line this WEDNESDAY! In all due respect to Turkey Day, The bar is closed on Thursday.
So, I’ve assembled an all-star cast featuring Mr. Orville Giddings. He of the 1000 watt smile and jewel-encrusted uvula will de driving in from Ipswich with a banjo on his knee. Not only that, but I’ve snagged Mr. Amadee Castenell, fabulously diverse tenor man and mainstay in Henri Smith’s band to put the fear of God in you. This is his first time with us. Make it count!
Throw in Mr. John Cameron, on keys and Mr. John Loud, on eggbeaters, and you have the beginnings of a wonderful night of music.Be the first on your block to carry your brainstem home in a box!

Dave says,
Tighten up your asteroid belt this Thursday as we blast off with the espied piper on the tenor sax: Mr. Gordon “Sax” Beadle. Everybody’s favorite! Just released from MGH where frantic doctors worked slavishly to relieve his screech defect , Big G. is being served piping hot for your musical edification. Not only that, but “Mr.” Edd “Duato” Scheer, on drums, will be joining us, too. What a night! We’re also dragging in Mr. Mike DiBari, kicking and screaming, on gootar, for that new car smell. We all sing, dance and play and will be cracking up all night long. You won’t get a chance to see anything like it again for many months!

Special Guest: ANDY PRATT!
We have a bit of rock/pop culture history with us this week
at the Rhumb Line. After a 4-year absence, Andy Pratt finally
returns as musical guest. A very special night. I sincerely
hope no one misses it! ~ Fly
Wikipedia: Andy Pratt (born January 25, 1947) is an American
rock music singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. In the
1970s, he made a number of experimental records and scored a
commercial hit with “Avenging Annie”. After words of praise
from Rolling Stone magazine (“By reviving the dream of rock
as an art and then re-inventing it, Pratt has forever changed the
face of rock”), he tried a more commercial approach. Pratt
converted to Christianity in the late 1970s and continued to
make records and perform at big Christian pop music festivals.
Pratt has released over twenty studio albums as of April 2012.

Get that file out and start sharpening your chainsaw in preparation for the arrival of “The Earley Birdz”. No, not the dentist drill of a saxist, but the other one: the Mississippi saxophonist and graveyard vocalist, the OTHER Mark Earley. A great singer, I have worked occasionally with him and love his vibe and choice of material.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to drag in that fabulous guitarist : Mr. Larry Sortwell, late of the great band “Grapevine Road”, to whoop it up. And wait’ll you hear his creamy voice, smooth as baby’s feet. Mr. John Cameron, keyboard wizard and my personal food taster, is also making a rare appearance, what with being so busy making toys for xmas in his workshop. Round it out with Mr. John Loud, local boy made good, on eggbeaters, and you have a great night of cool toons. I’m really excited about this. Now, if I could just stop the voices in my head….

I wanted to give you a heads-up about a great musical act performing at 7 Central this Saturday night from 9 to midnight.
I hope you’ll drop in and support this duo and give them a nice Manch-Vegas-by-the-Sea welcome. I’m very excited to have them come play. I have been speaking to them about doing so – literally for 2 and a half years – and this is the first time we have pulled it together.
Have a great weekend.
Chris

Golly; a lot of harp players lately. Yet, I’ve saved the best for last, at least for this month. Let’s welcome back Justin Quinn and his rolling roadblock for an evening of pedal-to-the-mettle fuel-injected blues. The long time host of Glenn’s Cool Bar blues sessions in Nbpt. is hitchhiking down here to give you a whiff of the real deal blueswise, and it’s going to be terrific, or,at least, terrifying. I love playing with this guy!
He’s bringing along Mr. Jon Ross, guitarist xtroidinaire, to mold the clay, and the ever so tonsorially-challenged drummbler, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris, to beat you to a pulp. It’s pre-Halloween, so nobody will notice if you dress funny. Not that they ever do. Bring a date and dance to the whites of her eyes!
