Mike Leary and Joe (Stoga) Scola Aboard The Dragger Pamet

Here is Joe (Stoga) Scola and Mike Leary, owner of the Dragger Pamet.

Peter Prybot had an interesting column in the Gloucester Daily Times featuring Stoga and Mike in the paper this weekend.  Click this text for that article.

Look for an upcoming video featuring Stoga in which he gives us insight into the often heard but rarely understood saying on the VHF radio- “Who Killed The Bird?”

Dragger Pamet Door

This is one door out of a set of two which separate the net when it is set off of the stern of the trawler(dragger).  The chains you see are attached to the cable wire which is released from the winch.  Then the net is attached to the doors to get the spread needed to maximize the area of open net and snare as much fish as possible.

Working On A Dragger’s Net

Ending the leased day at sea program and cutting our boats down to 18 days fishing per year does not sound very promising.

If you look under the black circular rollers you can see the net has been damaged.  It’s hanging there in shards.  Looks like the boys have a lot of mending to do.  No fun, no fun at all.  Sometimes a dragger will risk going over some rough or jagged rocky bottom to try and find some fish and the result is a damaged net.  Sometimes it can pay big dividends, sometimes you an end up with huge tears in the net.  I’m not saying that is what happened here, but there is definetly damage to repair here.  Not exactly the best of weather to have to do this kind of work.

Matty Splicing Wire Cable

Look for the video at 1:00PM.  Matty is splicing this wire cable to combine two lengths of wire and load it aboard a Gloucester dragger.

The Northern Edge Gets Hauled Out

Watch the Northern Edge Dragger out of York Maine get hauled out at Rose’s Marine.

Northern Edge, York Maine Dragger

Possibly the cleanest dragger of all time.  It looks like a pleasure boat it’s so clean.  Video coming.

Wire Fishing Cable Used To Tow Nets

The cable wire is actually a bunch of smaller wires braided together to give it incredible strength.  There’s something beautiful about this stuff up close that I never see as beautiful when it’s just sitting around the dock.

Angela Rose Net Reel

Here is a view from the stern of the Angela Rose looking at it’s net wheel. What you see coiled around the net reel in this picture is the wire that will be attached to a net when it is fully wound on.

Then when the skipper sets out the net it unwinds off of this net reel into the ocean. So if you hear a skipper on the vhf radio saying he just “set out”, it doesn’t mean he just left the dock. It means he just set out the net.
