Public art: Helen Bur new street art wall mural on Cabot theater in Beverly

2 of  2 (Bur mural)

Monumental new street art adorns the Cabot’s historic theater walls above and beside exterior murals painted in the 1990s by owner + staff from Le Grand David Own Spectacular Magic Company. Then and now the exterior murals offered opportunities for Montserrat students to assist in some capacity.

After a competitive mural call with some 70 submissions, Alex Senna, a muralist based in Sao Paulo Brazil was selected to paint the wall at Cabot and Dane streets (here). Helen Bur of London was chosen for the side wall along Judson at Cabot Street (this post), with Abington artist Felipe Ortiz assisting.

A portion of the cost for these 2019 public art works included about $40,000 raised by the Cabot and a grant award ($16,500) from the Essex Creative Community Foundation.  The dedication is Tuesday, August 6, 2019 from 5:30-8:30PM at the Cabot (286 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA). Food trucks and brew will be part of the celebration event.

Semiconductor legend: you couldn’t make a chip without ion implantation| RIP Peter H Rose (1925-2017)

Rockport resident, Rose was a notable North Shore physicist and entrepreneur who founded seminal global manufacturing companies in Gloucester (Extrion Corp. 1971/ then Varian/now Applied) and Beverly (Nova Assoc, 1978)/now Axcelis). Who were the customers? Who wasn’t! Intel, IBM, …Rose received a National Medal of Technology in 1996 for his work on ion implantation. He was awarded a PhD in physics in 1955 from London University.

I enjoyed this video clip from a panel discussion held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA, April 1-2, 2008:

Risto Puhakka Moderator: “A lot of the ion implantation technology really came from the– and still is in– the North Shore of Boston. What was the biggest contributing factor that it all practically came from there which is today’s ion implementation technology?”

Peter H Rose: “Well it started (on the North Shore) because that’s where we built the companies. It’s where we lived.

And in fact we did suffer– or maybe we didn’t suffer– from the fact that we were isolated from silicon valley. I’ve often wondered what would have happened if we started a company (there) my guess is that there would have been 20 start-ups in the second year. Luckily we’re far enough away that the technology didn’t leak out quite so quickly.”

from YouTube credit: Peter Rose joined a panel moderated by Risto Puhakka of VLSI Research to discuss the development of ion implantation. The panel was part of a conference organized by SEMI and the Chemical Heritage Foundation called Empowering the Silicon Revolution: the Past, Present and Future of the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Industry, held April 1-2, 2008 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.

Jefferson Starship lands in Beverly next weekend @ The Larcom Theatre on Saturday, March 21st at 8pm

Beverly, MA.  M.E. Productions is excited to present psychedelic rock icons Jefferson Starship at the Larcom Theatre on Saturday, March 21st at 8pm .  Rising from the ashes of Jefferson Airplane, their music helped define a generation focused on civil rights, environmental awareness and anti-war activism. This special show celebrates all the music of Jefferson Airplane on it’s 50TH anniversaryTickets for Jefferson Starship start at $35.

Beginning in 1974 as a break-off of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship is arguably one of the most well-known bands to come out of that decade. Their first album Blows Against the Empire was the first ever rock music recording nominated for literary science fiction’s prestigious Hugo Award. Their music helped define a generation focused on civil rights, environmental awareness and anti-war activism.

Currently the band is fronted by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Jefferson Airplane founder Paul Kantner, David Freiberg, also a former Jefferson Airplane member and co-founder of the legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service, and newest member Cathy Richardson, anchoring (and some say channeling) the historic role made famous by Grace Slick. They continue to perform their iconic repertoire of hits spanning all eras of their existence, including “Jane,” “Somebody To Love,” “Miracles,” “White Rabbit,” “Volunteers,” “Count On Me” and many more.

“This is one of the most exciting classic rock shows touring today,” says Seth McNally of M.E. Productions.  “The members haven’t lost a step, if anything they are playing with more energy than ever since the addition of the show stopping Cathy Richardson…and this show is especially exciting as they are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jefferson Airplane.”

Tickets to see Jefferson Starship are $35, $45, and $55 for premier seating.  For tickets and more information visit www.larcomtheater.com or call  978-525-9093.
