Roof collapse, no injuries

No one was injured Wednesday morning when a roof collapse at the old North Atlantic Fish Company at 88 Commercial St. caused a wall to kick out and trigger a gas leak  just after 9 a.m., according to fire Deputy Chief Tom LoGrande.

A black pickup parked adjacent to the scene suffered damage from the collapsed building. Witnesses at the scene said the truck belonged to a crewman aboard the fishing vessel Captain Dominic.

The building was vacant at the time the collapse, LoGrande said. National Grid was called and was able to shut off gas to the building. Gloucester Fire Department crews had to vent the structure due to a build-up of gas inside. Fire crews were on scene from 9:08 a.m. and cleared at 10:51 a.m.

LoGrande said among those who were called to the scene were the city’s building and electrical inspectors.

“I would think the building would be torn down,” LoGrande said.

Let’s Make This a ThinG Each Time it Snows

Let’s make this a thing. Tons of snowmen on the boulevard each time it snows. This made me smile the other day. I’m happy someone took the time to make such a fun snowman right on the boulevard to greet everyone who drives by. Wouldn’t it be fun if we could get a whole bunch of snowmen to line the boulevard after each snowstorm. It’d be so fun for the kids.

Fund Raising to Repair Our Lady of Good Voyage Towers

Our Lady of Good Voyage is raising funds to repair/restore their towers most recently damaged a year ago by wind. It is estimated that the repairs to this damaged tower might be around $150,000 and efforts are underway to raise funds to assist. This historic church is a mainstay of Gloucester’s community and history. Originally dedicated in 1893 and rebuilt after a fire in 1914, there is no question of its significance in the Gloucester history. Online donations accepted at ccgronlineolgv.churchgiving.com

LEAP for Education is running a FREE 2022 Summer Internship Program for Gloucester Teens!

Work virtually or in person on a project 9 hours per week July 11 – August 18 with a mentor/company where you will gain important workplace skills

Start to build a resume for college and future endeavors – examples of internships include; assistant teaching a Pathways for Children; assisting with youth art classes at Art Haven; project assistance at Gloucester Education Foundation; teen council/community representative for local nonprofits, teller positions at BankGloucester, internships at Appleton Farms, and many more

Receive GHS credit and a salary or $500 stipend

Attend regularly scheduled workplace skills workshops on topics such as job interviewing, searching for college/post high school options, stress management, financial literacy, and resume writing
