After close to four decades, there is likely no book contained in theSawyer Free Libraryunfamiliar to long-time library assistantJohn Prybot.

This month, John Pyrbot will retire after working for 35 years at the Sawyer Free Library. Through eight library directors and so many changes in the Library, John has remained a constant and reassuring presence, busy reshelving stacks with the latest titles, helping young and old alike find a book or an answer, and chatting with patrons most of whom he knows by name.

“I have always tried my very best to serve our library patrons. That’s been my overriding and unwavering goal, as well as the Sawyer Free Library itself as an institution,” said John Prybot about his long tenure at the Library. “My life in Gloucester revolves around the Library. We enjoyed a night in Boston on Tuesday and had dinner in the North End before the Bruins game. While the final score of the game was fairly horrible, a night in the city is usually a good cure for the winter blues.

Happy Humpback Café’s official Grand Opening will be Friday, January 21, but will also be open every day until then. It’s a fast-casual style café where people can order food at the counter to go or to eat at one of the tables in the dining area. The café proudly carries Karma Coffee out of Sudbury, MA. The coffee roaster sources his coffee beans from farmers all over the world and is extremely passionate about creating quality coffee. Stay tuned for their espresso menu—their machine is almost finished being built in Portland Oregon and will soon be shipped. They’ve loved meeting so many new people in the Magnolia area and beyond and are looking forward to being a part of the community. We are pleased to announce the 2022 Request for Proposals for the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation, a supporting organization of The Boston Foundation. The Bruce J. Anderson Foundation has been making grants on Cape Ann and in the Nashoba Valley for over 30 years. The Bruce J. Anderson Foundation provides grants for programs, direct services and new initiatives in the fields of mental health (treatment, research and suicide prevention, with a particular interest in mental health services supporting LGBTQIA young people), environmental protection, historic and archival preservation, and the arts.  

Please review the guidelines carefully and note that the application deadline is Monday, February 14, 2022. Grant announcements will be made in mid-June.

The Essex Heritage Partnership Grant Program is a reimbursable, matching grant program for municipalities and qualified non-profit organizations whose activities support our mission to preserve and enhance the historic, cultural, and natural resources of the Essex National Heritage Area (Essex County, MA). Interested applicants have until Friday, February 25, 2022, at 11:59 PM to submit applications for eligible projects focused in one of four categories:

Education: Create or further develop educational opportunities for youth 
Interpretation: Increase awareness and understanding of the region’s heritage 
Preservation: Preserve or enhance historic structures, landscapes, or cultural resources 
Access and Inclusion: Enhance access to the many resources offered within the Essex National Heritage Area through structural or programmatic updates or transportation. Examples of this category can include projects such as social justice-focused presentations, transportation for youth to access natural and cultural resources within the heritage area, or ADA improvements including wheelchair lifts, ramps, and interpretation aids.

When I looked up at City Hall I immediately noticed the reflection in the windows and I had to pull over for a quick photo. Lines, geometric shapes, and light always catch my eye. This would be great in a classroom. How many different shapes can you find? Pretty intricate!
