While sailing on the Schooner Mary Day this week, we spent one of our nights at anchor in Pulpit Harbor. At the entrance to the harbor sits Miss Rumphius’ home. “When I grow up, I too will go to faraway places, and when I grow old, I too will live beside the sea.” ― Barbara Cooney, Miss Rumphius.

An orange flag was raised at City Hall yesterday as visitors and guests marked National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Many in attendance wore orange to further mark National Wear Orange Day in support of victims of gun violence in the United States. Mayor Verga welcomed guests Bruce Tarr, Massachusetts Senate Minority Leader; Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante; Greg Gibson (Survivor and Activist); and John Rosenthal (Director of STOP Handgun Violence) and others. Thank you to all for attending to raise awareness of this critical issue.

It’s chicken thigh season! While chicken wing prices are outrageous a way better option are chicken thighs. Always inexpensive in the markets and super easy to cook. Two super full charcoal baskets with the coals ripping and offset on the charcoal grate. Lay a large piece of foil next to it and under where you’ll place your chicken thighs. Take chicken out of package, Pat dry with paper towels, lightly coat with peanut and then your favorite rub. Arrange chicken on grill grate opposite the coals and over the foil so the foil catches the large amount of chicken fat drippings. Keep all vents wide open and let it rip for 40 minutes covered with top vent wide open. Uncover- sauce- recover for 7 minutes to let sauce set up. Done- enjoy!!!
Found this old slide dated July 1964 was among some Gloucester relatives. I gave up on trying to identify the boat, but wondering if you might be able confirm by the skyline that it actually is (was) Gloucester.

The mussels at CK Pearl are to die for. I had them once last summer during Junior League baseball season when Thatcher and his team was playing down the street at the Essex baseball fields. Several of us dropped the boys off and then went for a quick drink and bite to eat while they warmed up…before heading back to the game. I went again several days ago and was happy to see that they were still on the menu. Red curry, coconut cream, corn, cilantro, crostini. The best I’ve ever had.
We went to Yella on the Water along the boulevard in Gloucester for lunch and it was OUTSTANDING. It was our server Erin’s first day, but clearly not her first day as a server. She was efficient and friendly as we lingered on the deck to enjoy the weather and the view. I had the chicken kebobs which were lightly seasoned and accompanied with a wonderful garlic dip. Jim got the Toscana flatbread which was topped with very fresh arugula and prosciutto. For the sake of this blog, I also ordered the chocolate creme brulee, which was one of the best decisions of the day. WOW. We are not foodies, as you well know, but we know what we like when we see it (haha) and our Yella experience was delightful. We are very happy to see Yella reopen for the summer on the boulevard and hope to see you there sometime.
