President Joe Biden takes a selfie with mental health youth action forum participants. Official White House photograph by Adam Schultz. “We’ve invested $1 billion to help schools hire and train 14,000 new mental health counselors in schools across the country. We’re also taking steps to address the harm social media is doing to young people and hold these platforms accountable.” July 31, 2023

*I wrote about art at the White House in 2014 which was published here on GMG in 2015:
“What’s the best art inside the White House? No matter what is your artistic preference, Gloucester and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts could top the charts as the City and state with the best and most art ties featured at the White House.
…How does the White House collection work? It is unusual for the White House to accept art by living artists. There are more than 450 works of art in the permanent collection. New art enters the collection after it’s vetted and is restricted to works created at least 25 years prior to the date of acquisition. For the public rooms, the Office of the Curator works with the White House advisory committee–the First Lady serves as the Honorary Chair–and the White House Historical Association. The private rooms are the domain of the First Family. Works of art from collectors, museums, and galleries can be requested for temporary loans and are returned at the end of the President’s final term. The Obamas have selected contemporary art, including abstract art, from the permanent collection, and borrowed work for their private quarters. Besides the Hopper paintings and John Alston’s Martin Luther King sculpture, they’ve selected art by *Anni Albers, *Josef Albers, Edgar Degas, Jasper Johns, Louise Nevelson, *Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Ruscha, and *Alma Thomas.” * indicates works that have been donated to the permanent collection.

The long-anticipated legacy project of the Gloucester400+ Stories Project is now available for advanced ordering at a special pre-publication price. This beautiful collection of stories, excerpts from stories, and poems reflects the city’s rich cultural diversity. You will read tales of people who found their way to Gloucester’s shores, and whose lives were shaped by the land, the sea, or its unique community. In the mix are a variety of themes including family histories, impactful memories and moments, and character essays. Some of the stories have never been told before and some feature the fresh voices of first-time writers.
To reserve this special limited-edition book we are encouraging the public to order online now. Pre-publication price is $60 for hardcover, $35 for softcover plus sales tax; the price will increase after publication. “Our People, Our Stories” will be available in time for the holiday season. Books will be available to pick up at either the G400+ Office at 123 Main Street or The Bookstore of Gloucester at 61 Main Street; there is also an option to ship books for a flat-rate fee.
The Gloucester400+ Stories Project is a community driven initiative, fueled by persons who came forward and simply wanted their stories told. You will hear the voices of ordinary and not-so-ordinary people who have something to say about their connections to and experiences in Gloucester. Our entire Stories Project Legacies Collection spans written individual stories, endorsed books, videos and audio. While the commemorative book includes a significant portion of the stories project legacy, the entire collection of stories will
remain available online and accessible for reading and research purposes into the future. The Stories Project is continuing to accept stories to be published on our website and be included in our legacy collection. Plans are in development to ensure community access to the collection well beyond 2023.
From hundreds of submissions, a cross selection of stories and excerpts were chosen from those that reached us on or before the deadline of March 17, 2023. The book committee wish they could have included all submissions; the sheer volume of stories prohibited them from doing so. It was a challenge to choose the stories and excerpts, but each story submitted was carefully considered and reflect a diverse range of voices, experiences, timeframes, and themes.
“I am delighted with the success of the 400 Stories Project and compliment all those who submitted stories embracing Gloucester’s 400+ anniversary. The quality of the submissions is impressive. I am honored to be part of the team that leaves this quadricentennial legacy of Gloucester voices.” – Laura Ventimiglia, Executive Director Emerita, who played a significant role initially in bringing the Stories Project to life.
To celebrate their Centennial Anniversary, the Gloucester Rotary will host a free Community Concert with musical guests Captain Jack & The Strangers (The Northshore’s Premier Billy Joel Tribute Band) and opener Brandon Blatchford & the Wannabe Teenagerson on Friday, August 11, 2023, 6-10pm at the Antonio F. Gentile Bandstand in Stage Fort Park.
The celebration will include food and beverages for purchase from 5 Star Phresh-Phood and Harbor Tap Trailer!
We celebrated Margarita Monday with the Bluefin Blowout at Mile Marker last week. Though the drink menu was especially designed for the Blowout, it was a good reminder of what a nice location it is at Mile Marker on Essex Ave for a relaxing drink and/or meal. And the view is pretty terrific too. Cheers Mile Marker!
