Cemetery Stroll Essex Old Graveyard

Fall is maybe the best time to take a cemetery stroll with the falling leaves and long shadows. The Old Graveyard or Old Burial Ground in Essex behind the Essex Shipbuilding Museum Archives on Rt 133 is a perfect example for a fall cemetery stroll. As described in my handy “Guide to Cemeteries in Essex County, Massachusetts”: Small cemetery well maintained. Some stones seem to be missing and a few broken. Contains graves of the first 3 ministers of Chebacco Parish (Ipswich). My stroll seemed to validate those conclusions. It’s an easy walk and feels VERY historic due to the layout and the older tombstones. There’s more information and even a map available at this link.

Two Sides of the Dike — pat morss

The causeway separates salt water Brace Cove from brackish Niles Pond, creating two diverse environments.

A young Great Black-backed Gull and Ring-billed Gulls share Brace Cove beach.
A seal out in the cove has a long wait for low tide to haul out on a rock.
Another Great Black-backed Gull swims contentedly next to the breakwater.
Gulls adapt equally well to Niles Pond, which is starting to show its fall colors.
Painted Turtles enjoy the sun on a favorite rock.
An American Black Duck, protective of his family, lets me know he sees me.
Two American Coots struggle to untangle breakfast.
A Ruddy Duck resurfaces near the middle of its dive circle.
This female Mallard decides it’s time for a duck dunk.
And water rolls right off her back.
Standing up to dry off.
It takes flapping to dry the wings.
That refreshing feeling.
So nearby, why is he so sad?

Elena M. Sarni is a humanities-based scholar, writer, and curator. Her new book, Trailblazing Women Printmakers: Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios and the Folly Cove Designers, documents and celebrates the group’s tremendous success and the incredible artistry of its members, pulling from the Cape Ann Museum’s comprehensive collection of the Designers and from other collection sources.

The Folly Cove Designers (officially 1941-1969) was a grassroots collective of predominantly women block printers founded by Caldecott Award-winner and beloved children’s book author/illustrator Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios (of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel fame). This trailblazing Gloucester based group produced more than three hundred distinct designs, which they block printed on fabric. The designs conveyed personal and regional narratives through the use of shared design principles and the compelling language of pattern. The group was propelled to international fame through commercial contracts with major retailers (F. Schumacher, Lord & Taylor, etc.), articles in leading periodicals such as Life, and participation in seminal fine craft exhibitions. Their work continues to inspire contemporary printmakers around the globe, particularly women printmakers.

With more than 250 black-and-white and color photographs, author Elena M. Sarni explores the Folly Cove Designers’ history, work, and group dynamics. Sarni holds a BA in English and an MA in History and Museum Studies from the University of New Hampshire. She lives in Maine with her beloved cat Leland.
