Mayor to Proclaim October as Domestic Abuse Awareness Month

On Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 1:00 p.m., on the steps of City Hall, Mayor Greg Verga will proclaim the month of October as Domestic Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month. All are invited to join him to reaffirm Gloucester’s commitment to becoming a violence-free community.

Mayor Verga notes, “This is an annual gathering of community leaders and partners to recommit ourselves to making Gloucester a Violence Free Zone. Continuing to do all we can to prevent and address domestic abuse and sexual assault are substantial parts of this ongoing effort.”

“As a community, we are blessed to have the swift response of HAWC (Healing Abuse Working for Change), our police department, led by Chief Conley and the Domestic Abuse Response Officers, the intersecting efforts of the Community Impact Unit, and the continuing training offered throughout the City on trauma-informed responses. We will share updates on these endeavors at our October 5th event,” the Mayor continued.

“Even as we come together to celebrate our persistence, we are only too aware of the continuing tasks and the need to support each other as we advance this mission by asking…. ‘what else can we/should we do?'”

“Please join me for this important event – the annual proclamation reading followed by the raising of the Domestic Abuse Awareness Flag. Be assured that the outstanding community services on which we all rely remain accessible:

  • HAWC services for those experiencing domestic abuse are available via telephone intake and in-person or virtual services as needed – 978-744-8552. The HAWC Hotline is staffed 24/7 at 800-547-1649
  • The Gloucester Police Dept. is available via 911 for emergency calls and 978-325-5400 for Officer Ron Piscitello and the other domestic abuse officers, and for non-emergency situations
  • Younity: Young Adult Access Center is available for youth 16-25, in person, at 6 Elm St. in Gloucester, and via text or telephone at 978-270-0428 or 978-415-4115

Long Walk to a Short Pier

A long walk to a short pier. With another 90 minutes to burn while Finn skated over at Governor’s Academy, I took my Tuesday drive through Newburyport and then walked a bit at the end of Plum Island. It’s really a special place.

Late Afternoon At The Beach

I took a ride and found myself at Pebble Beach in Rockport as the sun was beginning to sink in the sky. The light was so beautiful and the water so peaceful, I stayed much longer than anticipated and was eventually accompanied by some shorebirds.

What Fun Watching The O’Maley Field Hockey Team ExcelL Under The Tutelage Of Coach Jimmy Dalpiaz

Another great win last night. These girls were working hard and it was a blast to watch!

Korean Food In Gloucester? YES AND IT’S OUTSTANDING!!! You need to try Gang Nam (Click on the post for more pictures and descriptions)

After GMG Jimmy’s O’Maley Field Hockey win last night we decided to celebrate with dinner. So we went to a place I’d been excited to try for a while- “Gang Nam” in the location under Drift on the Rogers Street side across from Oak To Ember. Sista Felicia joined us and she’s one of the toughest critics around. She was wowed by it!

First up was the

Korean Corn Dog

Korean corn dog is a trendy Korean street food. It’s filled with cheese and sausage, then coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs.

It was really good. Super tasty.

Korean Fried Chicken

I should have put a quarter in the picture for scale. These were huge and super crispy while being coated with a delicious sticky sauce. Incredible.

Jeon

Crispy Korean pancake with scallions

The scallion pancake was my favorite- so flavorful and unique.

41. Korean Ramyun

Felicia got the Korean Ramyun which she liked
Rounding out dinner was the dumplings.

Stage Fort Park Cannons Area

The Stage Fort Park Cannons Improvement Project successfully opened up and evened out that area of the park to make it ADA accessible. I, for one, appreciate the more level and stable walkway as well as the open views and additional seating. I was late to the game in checking out the improvements which have been in place for several weeks now but took a little walk up there to check it out in case you were curious too.
