On May 25, the Magnolia Library & Community Center is hosting a ‘Porch Fest’ in celebration of 525 Day.

What’s a Porch Fest??  It’s a popular event where different musical groups play on porches as people stroll around listening to music. It’s the perfect event for sharing our beautiful oceanside neighborhood. We’ll have about a dozen porches all playing different types of music from 4 – 6pm on Saturday, May 25. In addition, there will be live music at the Magnolia Fire Station from 6-8pm. You can bring a beach chair or blanket, order some pizza or take-out from Grillfriends or 525 and enjoy the beach view from the park.

A map  of participating porches is available at www.magnolialibrary.com or from the Magnolia Library at One Lexington Ave.  Our musicians are donating their time and talent. The maps will include virtual tip jars so you can show your appreciation.

You may be wondering what’s 525 Day?  525 is the original telephone exchange for Magnolia, so we use May 25 each year to celebrate all things Magnolia – our Library, our restaurants and retailers, and our beautiful seaside location. Please join this musical celebration!

Free event, but support of the musicians and the library gratefully accepted!

Northern Lights

Northern Lights. On Friday night I was bartending and was afraid that I would miss the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. At almost 2:00 am I finally drove towards Plum Cove Beach (nothing), then Lanes Cove (nothing), then the Lobster Pool (a little action), past Halibut Point (CROWDED), to Granite Pier (some decent photos), to Bearskin Neck (better), then to T Wharf (bingo). I’ve added a few of my favorite photos.

Springtime Sunset Lane’s Cove

We decided to take a ride to watch the sun setting at Lane’s Cove recently. Although it wasn’t a spectacular sunset, there were plenty of opportunities for some decent photos. And sunset was at 7:55PM!! Woot Woot.

Mallard Mothers — pat morss

On Mothers Day, these Mallard women clearly need a break.

This mother of 10 is doing OK keeping her brood safe in the straw.
Until some of the kids strike out toward the middle of Niles Pond.
While this mother of 14 already looks over-stressed.

Restored Cannons Back On Duty

Two cannons have been restored and returned to Stage Fort Park. A recent project enhanced that portion of Stage Fort Park to ease access and it’s nice to see the cannons back in place. I understand David Dow was instrumental in this project, so thanks David!

FINDING ARMENIA,’ a film by Nubar Alexanian

 ~ CHASNAZ

On Saturday, May 18th at 3:00pm the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation will present the premiere North Shore screening of ‘Finding Armenia’ by noted Gloucester resident, documentary photographer and filmmaker Nubar Alexanian in the sanctuary of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church.

The program will include remarks with an audience Q&A with the filmmaker.  After the screening, a reception with the artist will be held in the Church’s historical room for those who may want to support the completion of the film project as donors.

An intimate portrayal of one man’s search for his Armenian identity, Nubar Alexanian’s ‘Finding Armenia’ not only provides a vital history lesson for those unfamiliar with the Armenian Genocide, but also challenges its viewers to grapple with the profound questions that influence all of our identities. What does the healing of inter-generational trauma look like? What does it mean to regain control of our ancestral narratives? How can these narratives be reconciled with a hostile world? And what responsibility do we have to painful histories, even when they are not our own?

Tickets ($13.50 General, under 12 free) are available at the door and in advance online, with more information, at www.gloucestermeetinghouse.org

The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is located on the green at 50 Middle Street, at the corner with Church Street.  Note: the green is closed for renovation but the main entrance is open. Please seek parking on the street and in lots nearby. A side entrance with an elevator is located at 10 Church Street.
