Save the Date: Artist Spotlight Garden Tour and Film Screening at Willowdale Estate May 13th
On Tuesday, May 13th, at 6pm, I will be giving a free guided tour of the butterfly gardens at Willowdale Estate, located in Topsfield. After the garden tour, we will have a screening of my film, Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly, and serve a selection of Willowdale’s exquisite refreshments. I hope you can join us! For ticket information and to RSVP click here.
To learn more about Willowdale, visit their beautiful new website here.
For the month of April I, along with Noah Quist, Willowdale’s new Director of Businesss Development, are featured in the Willowdale newsletter’s Meet the Team. Sarah Boucher, Willowdale’s Senior Sales and Marketing Director asked several questions of me for the feature. The following answer is in response to a question about creating welcoming habitat gardens, “My passion for creating butterfly and habitat gardens developed initially because I think butterflies and songbirds are exquisitely beautiful creatures and I wanted to draw these wild things to the gardens that I was designing. Butterflies and songbirds bring a garden to life with their grace in movement and fascinating life stories. The more that I learn, the greater the need becomes apparent for sharing information about the connection between native wildflowers and the web of life that they support.”
Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team Update

We had a nice field trip on Friday night. Saw spotted sals, wood frogs and spring peepers at Stillington. Spermatophores, WF eggs and SS eggs. And some lovely leeches. Then to long and narrow for some fairy shrimp, a newt, more spotteds.
Weather looks promising for tomorrow night. If we get the rain they’re talking about then we should see some migration. So….

Spring Art Show
The Magnolia Historical Society Art was a great success. Wonderful artists, food, thanks to Classic Cooks and the artists and visitors. There were over 500 visitors during the weekend. Here are a couple of photos.
During the Art Sale at the Magnolia Historical Society last weekend, a Magnolia resident came in with an original coat hanger from the hotel. The following is photo plus a GMG post from a couple of years ago.
Memories Of The Oceanside Hotel, Magnolia MA In 1931 From George Krewson III. My Dad purchased the Oceanside Hotel at Magnolia in 1931. I was 6 at the time. He kept it until 1946. Dad had no idea how to operate a hotel, having most previous experience in the building business. When the 1929 depression hit he was out of building and just happened to acquire the Oceanside by what he called “trading cats for dogs.” He and Mom learned quickly, and within a few years a guest suggested that they journey down to Thomasville, GA and have a look a winter resort inn there. They liked what they saw and purchased the inn. Each year for the next 11 years they thrived on the resort hotel business–the Oceanside at Magnolia in the summer, and the Three Toms Inn at Thomasville in the winter, Needless to say I cam to really love growing up in the business. Then came WW II and changes in all family’s lives.
Magnolia and the Oceanside, in particular, will always remain as a fond memory.

Pet of the Week- DAVE
Hi! My name is Dave and I am residing at the Cape Ann Animal Aid, located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter in Gloucester. I am sweet, affectionate and loving – by the way, I am on the left; my brother on the right thinks he knows how to sing. We are here at the shelter with our other siblings. I can be a little shy, but one I know you like me back; I am fine. I think I am a Retriever mix. I am only four months old, but will be medium in size when fully grown. Now don’t get scared – we had demodectic a skin condition that can be treated. It is not catchy to other healthy dogs, people or cats. We do still need some medication and we will soon be following up with the vet. Because of our special needs, we are looking to be adopted locally so our new families can follow-up with the kind staff here at the shelter for our skin care.
If you have the time and are up to the challenge that a pup brings – and all the joy too, please stop by the Cape Ann Animal Aid soon and adopt me/us soon!

New Film: Monarch Migration Interview with Tom Emmel
Horses neigh, bugs crawl across the lens, and Monarchs flutter in the background —interview on the mountaintop and it was all beautiful! Video includes footage from my forthcoming film, Beauty on the Wing ~ Life Story of the Monarch Butterfly.
Monarch Migration Interview with Tom Emmel, filmed at the summit of the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, Angangueo, Mexico.
This was Tom’s 40th trip to Angangueo to study the Monarchs. In this interview, he provides some historical perspective from those very first trips to the remote Oyamel fir forests atop the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Mountains. We learn how scientists count millions of Monarchs. Tom discusses the state of the Monarch migration today and why it is in crisis.
Tom Emmel is the Director of the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florida, Gainesville. Additional footage shot at El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Reserve and at the base of Sierra Chincua.

Full “Blood Moon” Lunar Eclipse !!
At 2:00 Am Tuesday April 15th the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse will begin .. The best viewing is from 3:00 am to 4:00 am … The Moon will have a Pinkish look to it at the start of the Eclipse then go to a Blood Red look .. Almost scary if u ask me …
Some religious groups and beliefs , believe that horrible things can happen during such an event .
As in apocalypse / earthquakes / war / insanity … It’s also believed that pets / wild animals can be affected by such a Eclipse …
I don’t buy any of it , in fact I welcome it and it’s beauty even if it does look scary … How ever the Bible does talk about “Blood Moon” and the signs they bring … But again let’s enjoy and not worry and hopefully get sum great pics weather permitting .. I do believe there will be sum clouds blocking it out from time to time … How ever there is a slim chance it will make an appearance ..
So fingers crossed and enjoy the show !! I’ll be up at 2am down GHB hoping to grab sum good shots to share with u … Here’s sum pics as to what to expect very late tonight wee hours of Tuesday am ….thanks for viewing …..

Rubber Duck Tech Tip: Lowrance Elite 7 HDI
Rubber Duck loves her gadgets and she wanted to know what was underneath her rubber butt. Rocks or maybe something fishy worth eating? So she just installed a Lowrance Elite 7 HDI in the Blue Duck.

Price point in the mid range for a depth gauge, fish finder, Chart and GPS display. In 2014 it is amazing what these things can do for short money. Double the price and you can get side scan which will show inside the wheel house of the sunken wreck in 200 feet of water. Maybe in a few years we trade up.
So what does this unit do? In the display from left to right. First the overlay numbers gives 23 feet of water under the boat, the river is 45.3 F temp at the transducer mounted on the transom, and Blue Duck is putting along at 5.1 knots. The left most screen shows the track moving south past Wheeler Point. I haven’t loaded the Navionics “Gold” charts which will will give even higher chart resolution. The base map is pretty good though. All 53 green and red channel markers on the river are there if I forget how to stay in a channel. The middle screen is the “Fish Finder” sonar which in deeper water might show some fish “arches” when it sees an air bladder of a fish. The rightmost panel shows “Down Scan” sonar which displays a pretty remarkable view of the bottom. In the current view there is a bump in the bottom as we travelled from 20 to 25 feet deep. One can waypoint mark that bump by just moving the cursor back to the bump. Then by driving back and forth the bump is still there! It will be interesting to see how it displays a feature in 200 feet of water.
All in all a nice unit. It is dead simple to switch screens to all chart, or split two of the views. Disconnects easily for safe keeping. I spent the winter looking at the myriad possibilities and settled on this one for ease of use and features. This model has been out over a year so the bugs are all squashed and the software is version 3.0 (I hate version 1.00 in any software.) The real compass on the console still works and the paper charts are within reach but I might be able to retire the sextant and throw away the Loran C charts. (Do they even broadcast Loran anymore?)
-Paul Morrison and RD (RD will hire out to string transducer wire. She thought it was fun.)
Crazy Moon @ 8:30, Blood Moon at 2am
As GMG Weather man Peter Lovasco points out in his very informative post (with great pix) there’s a Blood Moon tonight. This just in from Lisa Smith about how Cape Ann TV plans to celebrate:
Blood Moon/Lunar Eclipse tonight! Is it a prophecy of doom? or a rare celestial event? We here at Cape Ann TV are not sure of what to make of this heavenly sideshow. But to celebrate this rare phenomenon, we will be airing Gordon Bairds’ “Crazy Moon” a musical odyssey.
“Crazy Moon” airs tonight on Channel 8:30 p.m., with repeats at the wee hours of Tuesday morning at: 12:00 am, 1:30 am, 3:00 am and 4:30 am.
The Blood Moon goes live in the night sky at 12:53 a.m. through 6:37 a.m., and peaks between 3:07 a.m. and 4:25 a.m. on the East Coast, according to NASA.
Pictured is a NASA photo of a Blood Moon and a Gloucester Daily Times photo of Gordon Baird, note the red aura emanating from both orbs.
