Pretty Pebble Beach In January

We took a ride recently and noticed this new “installation” on Pebble Beach. I was soothed by the tide coming in and rolling out musically over the resident pebbles.

How Does One Restore a Medieval Castle?

 ~ HAMMOND CASTLE MUSEUM ~

Thursday, January 16th
10:00 – 11:45 am
10:00 – 10:30 am: Coffee & light refreshments
10:30 – 11:30 am: Presentation
11:30 – 11:45 am: Q&A/Conclusion.

Join us for a detailed discussion of recent and ongoing restoration efforts at the Museum with contractor and mason Roger Tremblay and Director of Education & Visitor Services Caleb McMurphy.  In the past few years, Tremblay, and his firm A+R Construction, have headed some of the most significant restoration projects in the Museum’s history, including the renovation of the Museum’s iconic 13th-century French monastery arches, originally situated in the Franciscan monastery of Couvent des Cordeliers, in Gers, France. In 2024, Tremblay’s team intervened to save a portion of the “towers” section of the building, modeled off of an 11th-century Norman keep, which had been badly damaged by winter weather.

Over the course of an hour, Roger and Caleb will discuss these and other ongoing and upcoming restoration projects, using photos taken during the work itself to give a look behind the curtain at just what it takes to maintain such a unique and historic building. After this, audience members will have a chance to ask questions of their own and get an opportunity to become involved with Hammond Castle Museum’s continuing mission to preserve John Hays Hammond Jr.’s legacy.

Member savings apply.

General Admission: $15

Proceeds from this program will support the restoration and preservation of the Hammond Castle Museum.

A Family Tribute – pat morss

Anne-Lise inherited some Norwegian ski sweater embroidery that was never used. It was time to put it to its rightful use.

The embroidery was hand-sewn by either her mother or her grandmother.
Anne-Lise found this traditional mid-19th century design.
Taught at school, she continues to knit several sweaters a year.
Starting the body of the sweater on circular needles, the Norwegian way.
The body is nearly complete.
And then the sleeves, on shorter circular needles.
Two parallel lines of thread secure the yarn before cutting the neck opening.
The separate body and sleeves are waiting to be knit together.
But first, the “heirloom” neck embroidery is sewn into place.
Again secured with thread, the body is cut to receive the sleeves.
The finished sweater, created by generations.

Gloucester Fire Department Directs Community Members with Emergencies to Only Call 911

GLOUCESTER — Fire Chief Eric Smith is asking community members to call 911 in the event of an emergency and no longer use direct phone lines to reach the Gloucester Fire Department.

Chief Smith and the Gloucester Fire Department direct anyone reporting an emergency situation or fire to call 911. This is now the only number for requesting assistance and reporting emergencies.

“Everyone must dial 911 in the event of any emergency,” said Chief Smith. “Our 911 lines continue to fully function. 911 is the only number used in Gloucester for requesting assistance, reporting fires and calling in other emergencies.”

For any Gloucester businesses or city residents that has a monitored fire alarm system or a monitored medical alert system, please check with your alarm monitoring company to determine what number it uses to report emergencies in the City of Gloucester. If that number used by your alarm monitoring company ends with “2424,” then you and/or your alarm monitoring company must contact the Gloucester Fire Department to receive the new alarm reporting number. In order to make this change, please call the Gloucester Fire Department’s non-emergency business line at 978-325-5300 and select the option to speak to a fire officer.

New Years Day

2025 came in with rain and dreary weather.  Late afternoon came and the sun tried to come out.  Gloucester Harbor looked very serene.
